Norwich University

Norwich has a proud military heritage. Edward B. Williston was an 1856 graduate of Norwich University. He was my Great Great Grandfather’s commanding officer (Battery D, 2nd US Artillery) from 1862 until late 1863, following my GG Grandfather’s graduation from West Point in 1862. Williston commanded the Battery at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg. At the Battle of Salem Church (Chancellorsville) he and my GG Grandfather split the Battery into two sections and repelled a Confederate counterattack on the 6th Army Corps as it was attempting to flank Lee from the direction of Fredericksburg. Williston was awarded the Medal of Honor at Trevilian Station in 1864.
