As an American coming in to the Desautels Faculty of Management as a U1 student thanks to AP credits I have to say that McGill’s policy for granting AP Credit is very generous and saves you time, money and stress while giving you more flexibility towards your program.

Many students here do four classes/semester a year and stay for four years, which allows for a reduced course load (that’s one less final per semester!
) and more time to get involved. For example, thanks to my lighter course load I was able to work part time at McGill while maintaining excellent marks and having a relatively good social life (aka going to St. Laurent too often-you’ll learn about St. Laurent your freshman year).

The magical number of credits is 24, afterwards you become U1 which allows you priority registration over U0 students. It also allows you to take courses in your declared major. For management students this means avoiding BUSA classes that are solely for U0’s which is a huge perk.

As to the general concern about retaking an AP class and getting better marks while good marks are quite tough to come by, putting a consistent effort and maybe if you’re lucky, taking some bird classes will help tremendously with your GPA.
