Note from the Director of Undergraduate Admissions (Official)

Virginia Tech is VERY transparent with their statistics - more than any other college that I know of (see link below). Anecdotally, getting into the engineering college is more difficult, but most kids that apply are self-selecting (only kids with higher stats apply) so the actual acceptance rate is roughly the same as the overall university.

This link allows you to pull up any major or college you want to see actual admissions data - very transparent…

College of engineering 2018:
Applied: 10,333

Enrolled: 1,891
Mean SAT Math: 707
Mean SAT English: 655
Mean GPA: 4.18
Offered rate: 67.5%

@PhilipM I think you are right. I am almost certain the answers to my questions #2 and #3 are “YES” and “IT IS ACTUALLY RANKED, EVEN THOUGH WE SAY IT ISNT”, respectively. I understand why they are not willing to admit it - it would open a big can of worms.

I guess its ranked within each major. So you could see someone ranked overall lower come off waiting list but they were ranked at top of the list for their particular department. There not just drawing names from a hat. Admitting their is a list would mean continued clamoring for (where am I on the list - how many a head of me).

They have to pool the waitlist by school since the ability to let folks in is based on program size and classroom space which varies from school to school. I do not think they do a 1-n ranking because that would limit their ability to make admission decisons that consider factors other than raw numbers to ensure diversity (not just gender and ethnic, but OOS/instate; regional; et). So if slots open for waitlisted kids in any given school, they will evaluate kids on the waitlist based on the application but also against the population of kids who have accepted the offer of admission.

@PhilipM perfectly said…

Great tour today at Virginia Tech. Our student ambassador tour guide did a terrific job.

My daughter, who is junior in high school and has not decided on Virginia Tech, is now a huge fan! Looks like we could have 2 Hokies on-campus by 2020.

Is housing guaranteed for the 1st years? I just read that some students are staying in hotels, is this a housing shortage or a temporary one year issue?

Jenn

Housing is guaranteed for all first year students. This past admissions cycle was a mess for VT. They over-enrolled and had to scramble to create housing for all first years who wanted it. They also allowed incoming freshman to live off-campus, but I’m sure this is temporary due to the recent shortage.

From their website…

https://www.housing.vt.edu/contracts/apply/first_year_students.html

Housing shortage will not be issue next year - but it will be much more competitive to get in since VT is going to have to reduce their acceptances - expect a lot more waitlisted next year.

There is a hotel on campus and one a few blocks from campus that the school has put some freshman in because of housing shortage - - but they have been setup just like dorms.

I believe the bigger issue next year will be are there enough housing complexes and apartments for the sophomores that will be moving off campus next year.

DD20 took VT off of her list because of the housing issues last year. I would guess others did as well, so VT may also experience a reduction in applications this year.

Per my son the housing issue hasn’t really been an issue. He hasn’t experienced any overcrowding issues. All colleges go through years with overacceptance - if people wrote off based on that happening in a prior year then about all colleges would be off their list.

The town is feeling the squeeze though. Off campus housing is at capacity. That means upward pressure for rent.

Good morning @VTAdmissions, Curious if Early Decision applicants will find out their fate tomorrow? Seems like it might be a possibility with the 15th falling on a weekend. Any guidance or update would be greatly appreciated!

If you follow VT admissions on Instagram, there is a comment on a recent post that applicants should check their guest accounts tomorrow, Dec 13 at 5pm. ?

Thank you @jessandboys. I do follow the Twitter acct, but missed that comment.? Appreciate the response!

@jessandboys, Found the comment on Twitter. VT Admissions says Early Decision status will be available 12/15 at 5:00pm.?

This thread should probably be closed since it’s from last year’s (2018) admissions cycle.

Yes, saw that twitter comment about the 15th but Instagram said 13th. Hoping it’s the latter ?

I haven’t closed thread hoping they would come back with any info.

I asked the Admission Office which date was correct and they just responded saying 12/13 was correct.
