Notre Dame Stops Covering Birth Control For Employees And Students

And the Jesuits in particular, do education well. The Jesuit honor society is based on service, scholarship and loyalty (to others). For many with a community bent – whatever religion or no religion – that can be a good fit. For others, it is not.

Evidence of this? I think they are pretty clear up front that there will be restrictions and I think they point out they ARE different than other top schools.

Agree, what makes you think they they try to “attract non-Catholic faculty by claiming they are not different”…that makes zero sense and I doubt they claim any such thing. If you are Jewish or Methodist or a Buddhist and you take a job there you certainly know and should understand you are taking a job at a Catholic university and you accept it, and go along with whatever is required of you or you simply don’t take the job. Same for a student, if you get a roommate who hangs a crucifix above their bed and it gives you the willies then you need to shut your mouth, because that is what you bought when you enrolled. It is a Catholic university and make no mistake a student can go there who is accepted who is not Catholic, but the culture isn’t going to change for that student or any other non-Catholic student. That’s the part that I don’t get. I think it comes down to the fact that it is exclusivity or selectivity “some people” want but they don’t want what comes along with it. If it were not a desirable Catholic university no one would give it a second thought.

Just looked at a bunch of job listings for UND from custodian to tech to prof. None mention “willing to deal with repressive religious atmosphere” in them, hmm.

Though this one is interesting:

I found only one that says that. (Asst teaching prof of art)

Because it’s NOT a repressive religious atmosphere. If one considers it repressive, and yet insisted on placing themselves in the environment, then one might want to consider therapy in order to deal with the self loathing. ;))

In other, surprising and jaw dropping news, Catholic student was unable to get pulled pork sandwich at Jewish deli. They were further styled in their right to eat when the Hindu restaurant refused to serve them a hamburger. They finally sat down on the street club in utter frustration when they couldn’t even get a decent wheat beer at the Halal lunch counter.

The oppression continues.

Pretty sure Villanova doesn’t cover birth control either… I don’t use the insurance but they refuse to fill birth control prescriptions I have to get it mailed from home

Interesting perspective, particularly since it is based on one low cost employee benefit. Fortunately, South Bend is a low cost town so the faculty can easily afford $10/mo. at the local CVS. But for those who this is a single issue, make or break, they have plenty of time to look elsewhere since the policy does not take affect until next academic year. Ditto prospective grad students.

Good to know that at least one Jesuit school does it right:

Go Redhawks.

Just to be clear, Notre Dame is not Jesuit.

I know. But we are discussing all of them.

Joking aside, working for a living is a little different than choosing a restaurant to eat in.

All employers have different health care coverage provided as a condition of employment. Some offer vision or dental plans, some have better mental health coverage, some offer different prescriptions medicines (depends on their approved list) than the ones I have been prescribed. It is just one more benefit to compare when considering employment offers or whether you wish to be covered by the employer’s insurance or seek insurance on your own or through a parent/domestic partner, etc. Not really groundbreaking.

So tell them to stop paying for viagra for whoever might use/need it in their support staff. Fair is fair.

They get to decide what is fair.

Laughable, obviously.

Don’t like it, don’t support it with your (or as is often the case with students - someone else) $$.

Really, it IS that simple.

I don’t think people in this thread are arguing against Notre Dame’s right to determine its benefits policies. Its just a discussion about that choice. If the response of many here to this discussion (“if you don’t like it, go/work somewhere else”) were successfully/validly used elsewhere on this board, the number of multiple page threads here would drop significantly.

To me what is interesting is that the catholic church continues to hold onto a policy/teaching that so many of its members totally ignore. I know a lot of Jewish people who don’t eat pork. Mormons who don’t drink alcohol or caffeine. I don’t know any Catholics (and most of the people I know are Catholic) who follow the church’s teaching on birth control. All within their right I just find it interesting. I also find the church’s view on birth control vis a vis extreme poverty and sexually transmitted diseases in various of the world problematic but that goes beyond this thread.

Personally, I would prefer really good dental insurance to birth control coverage. That is cheap and I can cover it myself more easily. YMMV of course. For me, there are more important things to look for in a benefits package.

There’s a good pun about a crown in there somewhere.

$5, if the guy is paying half.
