Normally, I’m a fan of ‘going away’ to college when you can, but Georgetown’s SFS program is one of the best, and the correct choice.
You really can’t go wrong either way because both are fantastic schools. But living in the DMV for decades, I have seen how well the program at Georgetown is regarded firsthand. I have many friends who went through it and it’s definitely worth it
What gave you this? As a more nerdy, introverted type (albeit one who loved the location and piety of Notre Dame), I was somewhat turned off by the gregariousness of the social scene. Very drinking heavy.
Keogh is new, but they’ve put a lot of work, from what I have heard from an ND-bound friend of mine.
Georgetown SFS is probably the premier IR program in the country, or at least the most famous.
So based on your academic interests, I’d give the academic “fit” edge to Georgetown. Generally speaking, Georgetown and Notre Dame are academic peers, but for your interests… I’d give SFS the edge.
In terms of social vibe, I attended neither. But, look, every school has parties. Probably more important is the difference in setting: small town vs. urban. DC will have a greater variety of clubs, restaurants, shows, etc. I suspect that the non-party social life at ND revolves more around sports than the South Bend Symphony, though I suppose there is some interest in the latter (if it exists).
ETA:
Though they have not been great recently, Georgetown does have a proud history in men’s basketball. A couple hall-of-famers named Patrick Ewing and Allen Iverson were Hoyas, and John Thompson won a national championship or two. His teams were frequent contenders for the Sweet 16 and further.
I’m reading a lot into what you wrote, but what I’m hearing is that you think you should go to Georgetown, but you really want to go to ND. Go to ND. I’ve had two of my own kids go there, and the atmosphere, people, and experiences are stellar. That’s my opinion, obviously, and both choices are great. But, yeah, if you need someone to tell you to go to ND, I’ll be that person. Good luck!
