Novel Writing as an extracurricular

@wmmts22 if you love writing, by all means continue writing. Being able to communicate well (written and oral) is an essential skill in every occupation I can think of.

In terms of the value of this as an EC…if it’s something you love, then it’s valuable.

ECs in general do not move the needle a lot in terms of admissions (unless you are an Olympic athlete, a famous performer, etc). But showing what you like to do is always an asset.

So…continue writing for your own pleasure…like you would do any other EC for your own pleasure!

i always get “keep writing if you like it” at some point whenever i ask this question, on other sites too. i’m just not sure how that response even comes up. it’s as if i write just for the college apps and i’d stop if it didn’t boost me any, but i promise that’s not the case. i couldn’t imagine quitting writing, and college wasn’t even on 11 year old me’s mind when i began my first book :joy:

thank you for the EC advice. i feel like i’ve seen their importance blown out of proportion a lot so thanks

I don’t think anyone is saying you should write to boost your college applications. People are telling you to keep writing because you say you love it and that it is an important part of your life.

Involvement in ECs should be for interest, enjoyment, personal growth, etc. – not just for college apps.

oh that’s not what i meant. i was just saying that i felt some may have thought that’s what i was doing, and that if i found out writing didn’t help, then i would give up on it, and that’s why they might encourage me not to quit. but i would keep doing what i’m passionate about whether it helped apps or not. that’s all
and yes, i agree
