November 2008 SAT Critical Reading

Poorek:
There was a question where it asked you to explain her quote and the answer was that the book kept her captive; however, there was ANOTHER question in which an answer choice was …reveals Mrs. Vermas path to becoming a microbiologist and i stated that this was NOT the correct choice. I’m trying to see what others put. I put described the past experiences

It is wrong

Wrongheaded/chicanery was on the PSAT this year also, which is bizarre.

Does anyone know which critical reading section was experimental?

ace: sorry my bad…

What about the “students” in the poetry passage one?

Wasn’t it something like those students seek only degrees?

could someone explain the paradox/dangerous one about the squid and the light

cherrypicker:

was the answer paradox? I think I put dangerous…

also was “composed” an answer for the “ms. verma” passage?
I thought it was “enthusiastic”…

i put dangerous, but some people put paradox
do you remember the question for that one?

and composed is the answer for that one
because it said compared to alu, what is ms verma?
alu is clearly more enthusiastic and overjoyed than ms. verma, but ms. verma is more COMPOSED than him.

is there a link to the aim chatroom?

I think it was paradoxical because it said that the squid used light to hide in the dark which sounds absurd but is true.

I got composed for the ms verma passage.

hmmm… okay

for composed one,
the question asked what can be inferred from “the squid actually radiates light when it wants to protect itself from predators”…wasn’t it?

The squid passage:
“Althought is may seem foolish to hide in the dark by using a light, the sea cucumber emits a light that cancels its shadow”

it may seem foolish to use a light to hide in the dark, but its not; the light helps keep the squid invisible. thus it is paradoxical because it seems contradicting.

composed was the answer; mrs. vermas was just standing there while the boy was running around freaking out.

Was “figurative” one of the answers?

And what was the question for
“ball in the undergrowth(?)” in hiking passage?

*The squid passage:

*

what was the actual question?

of course its paradoxical… theres no question for that. the reason why its paradoxical is because its ironic but true that they are using light to hide themselves.

Why does the author use the word foolish? or something like that.
to show that its paradoxical. one would think it would be foolish to hide in the dark with a light, but its actually practical.

ace:

what was the question for “ball in the undergrowth(?)” in the hiking passage.

And was figurative an answer?

the situation IS paradoxical. but isn’t it true that the author uses the word ‘foolish’ to imply that people would think that using the light would be dangerous for the squid, since it would be openly visible in the ocean?

i don’t understand how using the word ‘foolish’ shows that there is a paradox…paradoxes aren’t foolish at all.

OH YEAh. i remember i put ball in the undergrowth for that one. was it right?!
