Now that it's May, let's talk waitlist.

Sam

You’re right, the entrance class has enlarged by about 100 over the past few years with a target now around 2,100. Summer melt averages just under 5% so I’d guess without using the waitlist the admissions people hit their target pretty squarely on the head.

Housing hasn’t been an issue even at this level - the occupancy rate for on-campus buildings historically hovered in the high 90’s still usually leaving at least 100-200 open spots around campus (a lot fewer now, but the rooms are still there). Elder Hall (all freshmen) and it’s small northern siblings are being combined into a unified dorm structure as we speak (construction’s underway) - I’m not aware that this will add or subtract beds. No other new construction to expand housing (yet).

Despite the larger freshman class and increase in diversity, the acceptance rate has fallen to a record low, the percentile of admits in the top 10% of their HS class is at a record high, and the average SAT scores for admitted students is up once again, now standing at 1473.

All around, a great year for Northwestern in freshmen recruiting, unfortunately a tough year to be applying.
