Husband and I will be going out to Indian food at one of our favorite restaurants, but we will be home before any craziness starts. We will likely be asleep well before midnight.
We’re having crab cakes and fried oysters for dinner. We’ll pair it with a German Gerwurztraminer.
My mom just uses hot water, but I use chicken stock to give it more flavor. I have Chinese radish, squash, mushroom, spinach, tofu, sliced ribeye, pork belly, shrimps, scallops, dumplings. For dipping, soy sauce, hot chilly, black bean, saseme oil, vinegar.
I have an electric wok for cooking. It’s a Chinese version of fondue.
If you have a large asian market like HMart or Super 88 near you, they sell meat and veggies already cut for hot pot.
Start by cooking a package of bacon on a baking sheet in the oven. Save the grease to roast your potatoes (I throw in a couple of mince shallots on the pan and season everything with salt, pepper, garlic and thyme. Add tons of celery, 1/2 the bacon, and parsley to the cooked and cooled potatoes. Make a dressing of mayo (I do homemade), salt, pepper, thyme, stoneground mustard and champagne or apple cider vinegar. Add the rest of the bacon and some parsley on top. Sorry, I don’t measure anything. It’s even better when you use sweet potatoes.
So, first of all, the hostess helped me out by choosing a snake theme, since it is the Year of The Snake. Second, I am hoping enough wine will have been consumed by dessert that no one is thinking too hard about these.

@cinnamon1212’s epic cake is a tough act to follow - but today’s project was a cookie I’d never made but always wanted to - kids are off to different parties, with cookies!
My absolute favorite cookies!
S19 is working than Ubering off to meet friends. (He lives 3 hrs away).
S23 is doing fondue at gf parents house. Ive begged him to stay put early in the night no matter where he lands.
D25 is a flight away in Charleston with her dad.
Husband and I may pop into neighbors quick but considering he’s had 2 abdominal surgeries and 2 overnight hospital stays at 2 different hospitals in the last 10 days, he isnt moving fast right now.
I made Coq Au Vin Rose and French Onion Potatoes Au Gratin (and asparagus) for the 2 of us.
I’m going dancing at The Broken Spoke with ds2 and his gf, who is visiting for the first time. The things I do for ds2. She is a great dancer and has raised ds’s game. I don’t know how long dh and I will stick around, but we feel like we should make an appearance, and who knows? Maybe we’ll ring in the new year.
Ds1 and his wife had no desire to go dancing so they are heading over to a HS friend’s house for a little party. I sent them with more than two dozen tamales so I think they will be a popular pair. The rest we are keeping for tomorrow and the big UT playoff game!
Having all the kids here has been fun and exhausting!
D is making molasses gingerbread cookies for her uncle who made her a special soup because he learned that she loves it (as does he). His family doesn’t like it so he was thrilled to learn that she was craving it and made it. D was so touched, she wanted to make him something special. :). It’s a LOT of work, so it’s became a group project with DIL, D and me. Haha!
We call them black & white cookies. Love them!
Went with a friend to a late afternoon showing of A Complete Unknown - the Bob Dylan biopic.
Then we met another friend for dinner at Tiger Dumplings.
Now I’m home sipping on a 2016 Keenan Merlot. Probably won’t make it to midnight.
Happy New Year to all of you
Duck Jubilee- old recipe from The New Cook’s Cookbook, bought sometime in the 70’s. Always happy to not set the kitchen on fire.
We had sushi then watched the Penn State game. WeAre! Midnight with hubby at home. Tomorrow brunch here with DD family and entire family and dear friends here for fancy china dinner. Traditional pork and sauerkraut.
Happy new year to my cc community!
We didn’t have dinner because we weren’t hungry, but proceeded to have too many cosmos and I think I passed out about 9. We had a great time getting loopy and laughing, though.
Of course this morning I woke up swearing off alcohol.
3 years ago I hosted my first NYE dress up party. It was fun, but just too much work right after Christmas, plus the cost.
We do host many things. I wish my friends did more. I’d like to be a guest sometimes!
I tried to cover my disappointment when DH said he was going to bed at 9:30. ?!? I guess he caught the vibes and wisely decided to stay up with me. I didn’t ask to go out this year, but I do like to see the ball drop. We thought the music on the ABC show was really good for a change.
