NYC trip in May, recommendations for Broadway shows

I loved Mathilda and Something Rotten. Something Rotten had me laughing so hard that I was in pain. When I went, my friend, husband and I lined up at the St. James theater at 7AM for rush tickets. We got three seats front row center for $35 each - they’re considered partial view because you can’t see the stage floor, but we were so close we could have poked the conductor. It’s an especially great show if you’re a fan of musicals and Shakespeare in general - so many inside jokes and references. Christian Borle is phenomenal as Shakespeare.

I really enjoyed Finding Neverland. We saw it before it went to Broadway at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA. It’s a great show–story of J.M. Barrie and his relationship with the family who were his inspiration for writing Peter Pan. Kelsey Grammar played Hook in the Broadway show at one point–don’t know if he’s still in it.

Well alwaysamom, I guess someone had to break the news to me, so it might as well have been you. I bought tickets for two performances so if we missed Lin at one, we wouldn’t miss him at the other…the best laid, extremely expensive plans…I hope Son can still have fun. He has Asperger’s and really counts on things being a certain way. Hope Jon Rua has his act together. I’ve heard that Javier Munoz is good.

In case anyone else is relying on the cancellation line for Hamilton tickets, they have just changed their policy. I don’t know if a link to twitter will work, but basically they are trying to cut down on re-sellers.

@missypie I’m kind of happy they changed the Hamilton line policy. Last week my son felt lucky to score a ticket after standing in line for 19 hours. He said there were several paid line standers in line with him.

OP here reporting back our success story for getting Hamilton tickets! There were four of us, we had two line dudes that stood in line for 36 hours (0500 Friday to 1700 Saturday). The cost of the tickets with line standing fees was about $540 each. If anyone is thinking about using a line sitter, I highly recommend Robert’s company- Same Ole Line Dudes. They were reliable, friendly and very communicative. Physically, there was no way I could have waited in line that long.

Our line sitters were number 4 and 5 in line. Number 1 and 2 position was being held by a line ‘standing’ company. When we took over for our sitters, everyone in line was talking to each other, excited and hopeful that we could get tickets…except for the first 2 guys- they just sat there not saying anything or even smiling. When the box office guy came out, he asked the #1 and 2 how many tickets they wanted. When they answered that their clients weren’t there, they were told to stand back. The next person (#3) was asked how many tickets- he said 1. Then it was our turn! We said two pairs for the four of us. We were told to move behind #3 guy. He ended up getting another ‘single’ guy to ‘pair’ up with #3 guy. We were escorted into the building and told to purchase our tickets and then stay away from the cancellation line (we still had over 90 minutes before the show started). Our tickets were for row CC- the front row! The show was awesome and amazing and worth every penny.

I read the ‘new policy’ from the theater but it reads the exact way they currently are doing tickets. This does not get rid of line standers, just states that whoever buys the tickets needs to go into the theater.

We also saw "Disaster’ which was a very funny musical about an earthquake, tsunami, and other unfortunate things that happen to people on a gambling boat attached to a pier which was anchored into a fault line. All the music was from the 70’s. The kids and I found it funny and entertaining.

D wanted to do all things Hamilton last weekend so we went to see the Hamilton Grange (the house he had built for his wife Eliza), we stopped at the Trinity Church where he and Eliza are buried, and on the way home we stopped in Weebehoken NJ to see the site of the duel.

We also hit a few comic book stores, the M&M store, and…? other places. I think we walked about 5 miles! All in all it was a very good weekend. D told me numerous times that I was the ‘best mom ever’ and that this was the ‘best birthday ever’. I have to admit, I think it was.

Oh! while we were waiting in the cancellation line, Daveed Diggs (who plays Jefferson and Lafayette), stopped and I managed to get a picture of D with him. He was the nicest person! He wished us luck on getting in to see the show. Then during the show, there was a part where he blew a kiss and winked- he was looking right at D and I when he did it. After the show, we waited at the stage door and D was able to get her Hamiltome signed by Daveed, Lin- Manuel, and two other actors. Everyone at the stage door was so nice and polite - which shattered my preconceived ideas about NYers- who are supposed to be rude and impatient! All the actors were very patient- taking pictures with everyone, and signing whatever people handed to them. Overall it was an amazing night / weekend.
