NYU Abu Dhabi

KiwiKid, congrats!!!))

@bmraotwtn: hello! Silkesha here…from India…

where are u from? also, mind listing your stats?..or at least, ur SAT scores?
Do you have any idea about how many of those who attended the Nov CW are applying for ED-2, besides u, of course?

Thank you :)

@bmraotwtn
wait… so you can get invited to CW even before your app is completed? did you get nominated from school?

@cst11 – yes, he was a nominated student and therefore was able to attend a CW even before he submitted his app…

My S just got offered addmission to NYUAD with decent aid. He was there at the Dec. CW. here are a few things I figured out - SAT is not as important as one might think for non- US students. however you need to convince them with whatever else you have that you are one inquisitive kid, keen on learning. GPAs are important - and it need not be all that high ! ( my S had about 90%) You need something to show them apart from good grades, like a national level prize, good ECA, etc. - like have you a blog on something you are passionate about? some work that you pursued on your own? You see, i get the feeling that the Authorities are wanting to break out of the usual set of criteria to find good kids. They are out side of their familiarities - US kids and they are on alien grounds -looking at kids from other countries. ANd they know SAT is not, simply not the yard stick here for this lot.

Show that something extra that sets you apart ! Explain it well and send it in as a separate write up with pictures & whatever you can put on a pdf - apart from the common app. to the admissions office - An art form you pursued, a small cause you fought for, etc.

submitted 2 SAT subject tests ( not 3) and submitted a national award (Science Essay competition) to meet standardized testing requirements - He had 770 in Math & 720 in Physics. Nothing else was submitted.

Be passionate about a subject or a topic and be prepared in it if its mentioned as the thing u r passionate about. You need to have DONE something in it too to demonstrate your passion. That along with decent scores will be fine.

all the best to everyone here !

@nrousep:

Thank you very much! All this was indeed helpful! However, could you please elaborate a little more on the pdf that he had submitted? How did he submit it? Did he attach it to the Additional information section on the Common App? Also, what all stuff did he include in that? I plan to write on my research experience…hence, I’d be really grateful to u if you could tell me a li’l more about this!

Thank you, once again!

@silky…

In Additional info in common app one must use up the full 500KB allowed as upload. After the commonapp is submitted the NYU Admissions will contact you with a Net Activation - They can also be contacted for all clarifications. They also welcome anything that you may want to add further to the upload in common app. it is marked for the admissions people to see. they are very helpful in letting you present yourself well. You shud understand that they are dealing with a far larger international crowd than they are used to.

if you have done things out of the way think of a way to EXPRESS it well. Elaborate on each. As you are from India, even a state level prize is big as India is BIG country with 5 times the population of the US. Explain it well. Take your best 5 activities , if u have many and explain it well with half page per activity or more. use pictures too. If they can all some how point to your intended major - Great!

Essays on why NYUAD better be passionate and explaining why u think its a good idea. My Son read up on NYUAD and he just wont consider any other ! We debated on its pros & cons and he wrote about why its was his first choice in that NYU supplement. You just have some 250 characters- about 50 words or so to do this. I did see some of the ECA u have done. it looks good - Dont make a very long list - elaborate on your best ones.

all the best - feel free to seek/ask more

let me clarify on last post - you can upload to the NYUadmissions office anything else you want to show them as a pdf -apsrt from whatever you uploaded in the common app.

to answer a few questions -

yeah you can go on a CW if you haven’t applied, but only if you’re invited on the first one. they based choices for the first CW solely on nominations.

im an american student with a 4.13 unweighted GPA, 2270 SATs, 800 740 720 SATIIs, and a lot of international experience. IB student as well. i realllllly hope i get in ED2… i dont know what ill do if i dont :(

and as for stats from my CW, there were probably only maximum 20 out of the 55 kids that were ED1, based off of results that I know of and the fact that 22 of us hadnt even applied by the time we went on the CW. as of now, i know only four other students that have pledged to do ED2, but as of now, only one other student and myself have actually applied ED2. a lot of students are still wavering on what they want to do, so I would say a maximum 10 will do ED2.

hope it helps, and i hope to see all applicants here in abu dhabi in september (fingers crossed!)

hey! thank you for your clarification, bmraotwtn! your stat seems amazing. hope it all goes well for all of us. i am also an ib student but one with the contagious procrastination disease which had been delaying the submission of my supplement… :(

@nrousep: Thank you! I actually copy-pasted your words in a doc…they are of great help! hope u dont mind! :slight_smile:
and CONGRATULATIONS to your son on making it to NYUAD! Also, I’ve just realized that you too are from India…and that too from Cochin! So, I suppose your son studies at Gregorian…cuz I’ve heard tht a student from tht school has been accepted! Its a really good school…I’ve heard quite a lot about it! :)

anyways, thanks again for all your advice! I hope that I’d be able to make it, too!

Wishing everyone on this thread all the best, not just for NYUAD but for all Univs /Colleges.

Dont get too dejected if you not get into a particular Univ or college coz believe me, things are not what you think they are now- Most univs discussed on CC are good and once you get out of undergrad the race begins again for Grad school !!

When i got into a college which wasn’t my No:1 option, i was a little down but only till i joined up ! It swept me off my feet ! When i passed out i was so glad not to have done my studies at the college i had ranked no:1. Each place has it’s unique advantage ! Sitting outside & speculating based on rankings etc is like trying to get the taste of honey by reading the ingredients on, or licking, the bottle !

Finally in the end, its about learning a particular subject too - lets not forget!

Today the contents of most subjects , at the level needed for UG are available online, in e-books & so on. Curricula are similar at most colleges and not secrets anymore. Unlike before knowledge is not confined to books which are in turn confined to libraries . Libraries were what Universities prided in once along with knowledgeable faculty. Today, on line versions of books, library link ups , etc have taken the wind out of the old ideas of what a university had to be. MIT & several big univs have hosted their lectures on line for free. Eventually, it will all be online via video conferencing or networked VR as the idea of several top profs being physically confined to a campus with old stone buildings and every one else landing up there,to live, eat, excrete & sleep there, is a lame idea in this era of networking & convergence thats shrinking the globe. ( CC is a great example!)

As long as you have done an UG in a major its fine ! Everyone will then face round 2 - Grad school or Jobs. So get into at any decent univ enthusiastically . Overlook any initial hang ups ( you will find several even if u got into your No:1 choice) and get on with your studies ASAP to learn up.

Dont take ranking foolishy - they do not make sense if u have a major in mind with a particular lean or flavor. Neuroscience for example is offered at several Univs. But they each have their lean ! some lean towards pre-meds, some to cognitive sciences, others to computational, some have more biological while others may mix in AI, etc. U need to re-rank them all freshly from the point of view of what you seek !

For example, my S was looking to do Neuroscience at a liberal arts college given what LACs are. And among LACs the top three were Williams, Amherst & Swarthmore. But since he also wanted a Minor in engineering or be able to do Engineering courses too, the list made no sense and was redone using LACs that have Engineering - now the list was Swarthmore, Bucknell, Trinity, Lafayette, Union, etc. But the Union was far better equipped with several heavy duty instruments ( like 2 electron microscopes + a particle accelerator) and Trinity had the best course mix for Neuroscience with neural engineering electives too ! The list then changed - Swarthmore was out coz it did not have some of these advantages others had. So you see, if you have an idea what you want to get into, things are different. If not, you have the advantage of being flexible. If you end up in a univ very well know in its pioneering work in teaching nanotechnology , then explore that ! You may find it fascinating to opt for that to bring added value to your self.

In the end its about value addition. have you gain knowledge that companies are willing to shell out $$ to use or hire? Brand name in education helps initially but in the end, if u cannot deliver, colleagues from lesser known colleges can beat you if they know their stuff. And if you know your stuff, people who come to hire you can tell. Trust me.

When i passed out with a master’s in Engineering, we had never heard of PERSONAL computers ! Toady, i make a living from computer applications in Multimedia !! ANd i did Civil Engineering & Industrial Design !! So my advice, Dont worry if u do not get into your No: 1 choice or if your no:1 disappoints u in certain aspects.

Bottom line: Get familiar with the academic jungle - learn to scale a few tall trees in there, to pluck its fruits, tame the animals living there - many of them do not bite ! try & learn the process of scaling a tree well all by yourself - coz thats what you will be doing all your life ! When you come out it does not matter what tree you climbed , what fruit you ate of it. That you have been through it is all that matters to many companies, organizations, families & friends. Happy hunting 2 all !

@silky … yes u r right about Gregorian & cochin…

Great post… thanks =)

great post indeed! thank you!

haha, consider me an idiot, but I JUST found out that ā€œ500ā€ on the NYU supplement is not words, but characters )) and all this time i’ve been sweating myself to squeeze out 500 perfect words XD

Wow nrousep great post!

I applied ED2 to NYU AD. Stats if anyone is interested, or wants to chance me =)

770 SAT math - 1 wrong
760 SAT writing - 2 wrong, 10 essay
680 SAT reading - 12 wrong!!

800 Physics
800 Math2
770 Chem

3.99 weighted GPA, class rank 2/495
4A’s at AS Level

I’m not hoping for much, but I’d be very happy to go if I got in. This place has a very low admittance rate =/ even less than Harvard.

@ma3a20 — I won’t comment on stats, they’re Mashallah superb I’ll say, just a curious question, where you from?

@murtaza I’m from Pakistan; I’m doing my A Levels here. I was in The Netherlands from class 1 to 11, did my GCSEs then came back with my parents.

@ma3a20 — Netherlands, that’s cool! Even I did A-Levels, I’m on a gap year, I did class 1-5 from Pakistan and 6 onwards from AD. Are you from Karachi by any chance? :)

It definitely is cool =) freezing infact. Nope, I’m not from Karachi.

So how is NYU AD? I haven’t had the chance to visit. Even just being able to go there for a weekend would make me happy :smiley: Although it would probably make the waiting terrible.

Did you do anything special in your gap year?
