NYU Class of 2014 questions

I don’t really know much about NYU (or any college), so there are 2 different macroeconomics majors? Is there a big difference in what you learn?

Politics major is PoliSci right?

there’s no macroeconomics major as far as I know, but there are 2 economics majors - one in CAS and one in Stern. I know in the CAS econ major you can get a BA or BS and you can do a more “theory” oriented track or “policy” oriented (don’t worry about the distinction yet). The Stern econ major only offers a BS and it’s more business-oriented than theoretical, since obviously stern’s a business school.

yep, politics = polsci…they’re the same thing, just some colleges call it polsci and others just call it politics

Alright thank you. I think I want the theory/policy stuff more than business so at least I understand now.

So I register for the major during orientation?

Can LSP students take honors classes freshmen year? For instance, I have psych, calc bc, chem, and physics b AP credits: all 4’s or 5’s. I also may have spanish language AP credits. I’m looking to take honors calc 2 (yes again, for my GPA and pre-med) or honors general chem. I’m speaking of the honors class sections, not the honors programs as a whole. Also, more generally, are LSP students restricted from taking certain classes in CAS? Any insight?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. What benefit does NYU receive from the LSP? It seems strange to have a separate college that eventually filters into CAS/ Gallatin ect. anyway.

@elguy16: Yes, you can take honors General Chem, assuming you do well on the placement exam (you take the exam during orientation). I’ve never heard of an honors section in Calc II though…I suppose there might be one. AP credits won’t place you out of Spanish, but you can take the foreign language placement exam to place into a higher level. No, LSP students aren’t restricted from taking any CAS classes. Most CAS classes have prerequisites (like gen chem before orgo, etc).

LSP is technically not a separate college like Steinhardt or Gallatin; it’s a program run through cas faculty…but the benefit to NYU is it keeps CAS’s acceptance rate low, while providing NYU more students, meaning more tuition.

Hey,

I’m a sophomore currently in LSP going to CAS. I want to major in Neural Science (NS), but I’m really confused about how my schedule is going to work out. I saw on the website that one of the requirements is a Statistics class, which I have to take in the Spring because it’s full now. But, I have one extra class that I can take now in the Fall, but I have no idea what. So far, I have Bio I, Orgo I, and CF and Psych I. Should I drop Psych I since it’s unnecessary for the major and just be satisfied with 3 classes? I feel that’s not worth the tuition I’m paying now to only take 3 classes.

If, possible, can you tell me how you schedule your classes for these past 3 years starting sophomore year? Hopefully, the prerequisites haven’t changed.
