October 2012 SAT Discussion

^ Wasn’t it tough? I was really worried until I realized it was experimental. The other W section was much easier.

Definitely…the one about the return limit had me worried. And it was my second writing which also annoyed me because I was feeling really good about the first one and spent the rest of the test hoping the first one was the real one.

Phlegmatic was the answer to which question???
isnt the answer for the yoyo sales question - the sale abruptly ended after june 1950 since it said that every kid had to have the yoyo during june 1950 while none wanted it during june 1951

@sa3630
NO, since the reading stated that the sales were nothing in june 1950 but in july 1951, everyone wanted one. Hence, your answer is the exact opposite to what actually happened.

The right answer was that the commerial demand increased in july of 1951 (basically the “commercialization expliotation increased”!!

For the essay regarding whether or not we should care about people in other countries I referenced All Quiet on the Western Front when the main character Paul realizes that the French enemies are men just like himself. I said that this shows people in other countries should not be defined by where they live and that all people are of equal importance.

I also talked about Peter Singer and his solution to world hunger and how he talks about how the US should give to the poor in Africa. Even though they live in another country they should be cared for.

Are these good examples? I didn’t have much of a conclusion but hope I did well (got and 8 essay, 630 writing last time I took the SAT)

those who had 4 CR sections:
Does anybody remember what section the Sonny and Edgar passage was in?
ie: was it section 2 (after the essay?)

(The Sonny and Edgar passage was one of the many different experimental sections for the CR section of the SAT)

Wait you guys are all saying that for the creative writing passages that answer for the thing both authors would agree on is that the classes are “helpful but not essential.” but there was ABSOLUTELY NO indication that the first author found them to be either helpful or unhelpful, in any aspect whatsoever. All he/she did was bash creative writing classes…remember how it was like a list of things a writer needs, and then at the end it was like “Oh hey btw none of these things are what defines a creative writing class.”
AMIRITE?!!
What I put was the one that said “It would comparatively be more helpful with outside experience.” After all, they all said how the things you learned outside were better than what you learned in a classroom setting.

^It was helpful but not essential

Does anyone have the question for the autonomous answer (or the gist of it), cause it’s not ringing a bell.

but why would you infer that for passage 1? what did the author say to indicate that?

no one chose “cynical” instead of “unflattering”? I AM DEAD.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I put for my essay? (post #1508)

@Fallingfromsky what question was that?
@kiwisarecool I honestly forget the 1st passage, but there were subtle clues I think

@jds They sound like good examples, so I guess it just depends on the wording you used. I didn’t get the chance to develop my second example as much as my first, but hopefully it’s okay. I got a 9 on my last essay, but I’m hoping for higher this time.

And the autonomous one was a vocab question talking about a group of people who were part of some experiment. The other word to go along with it was “collective”.

I think that “helpful but not essential” could be correct but I still think there isn’t enough to reasonably conclude that it was right. You could still say that they would open a writer up to helpful peer editing. He does speak of the benefits of peer editing and passage 2 definitely does. He had a sort of biting statement at the end of the passage when he said “and none of these ends in a degree…” that’s disparaging. Thats NOT Helpful. I think it is still up in the air for sure.

^Yeah this was definitely a tricky question

“Peer editing” and most of the other choices were too specific. They did talk about collaboration but not about “editing,” which is a specific process. I remember thinking along similar lines, but “helpful but not essential” turned out to be the least extreme and most reasonable choice.

It may not have been peer editing. I can’t remember the wording but that fit the question because I took a lot of time on that one as well. I dont see how the peer answer was “extreme” I simply think it is one that is very up in the air and we can’t really make a consensus on at this point.
I am saying this because on that compiled list there are many questions that have multiple answers that we aren’t sure of but this one seems like a done deal and it most certainly NOT.

Yeah @Studious that was my reasoning behind it. For an article that wasn’t too specific that seemed like the right choice

What was y=65 degrees for?
