***October 2015 SAT (US Only) Thread***

What time will they come out on the east coast? 12 am??

@nsliyromanov 5am EST

@swimnerd1 I picked ubiquitous. I feel like that vocab question was less controversial as exorbitant is usually referenced when talking about money. But for sure, both of the questions could go either way. :-S

edit: also I wouldn’t rule out any of your answer choices if you scored 780 on CR last time haha

@pokemon1: I think anything in the 2300 range is considered decent, and there’s very little difference within that range, so whatever my writing score is (hopefully a 760 like you said), I should be fine :).

5am :confused: why not midnight?? Darn collegeboard. I’m waiting on two subject tests, lit and ush and then I can move on with my life. Did anyone take either of these on the 3rd?

So I’m trying to figure out which section was my experimental section. I had three math sections in a row, and I know one of the was the 4th section but can’t remember which. I’m guessing that it was the 2nd math section. What do you guys think? I feel like they would have put an experimental section between the two real sections.

@awesomesauce
I don’t understand this step:
sqrt(x-2) + x = 0

If the above is true then we could move the plus x to the other side and it would not be imaginary either. Didn’t the question ask what is the lowest possible y value and if 3 works wouldn’t that be right?

@KillerKiwiJuice I really want to play Fallout 4 but I first need to finish Arkham Knight and then get around to MGS V, plus real life responsibilities. First world problems lol.

Studied for 3 hours everyday for 2+ months. Does hard work really pay off? Guess I’ll find out tomorrow :slight_smile: Best of luck everybody.

@awesomesaucee I put ubiquitous as well, definitely the best fit. The wait is killing me tho!!

@tomatoes124 Start with the left side. You know that the lowest value the left side can come out to be is 0, meaning that on the left side, we can use y=3 and anything above that. Now the right side. If you make x anything below 2, you won’t get a real answer

sqrt(x-2) + x evaluated at x=1 becomes sqrt(1-2) + 1 = sqrt(-1) +1

Therefore, the lowest number we can use on the right side is 2. Plug in 2, and the right side comes out to be 2. Now we know we need to make the left side equal to 2.

sqrt(y-3) = 2 becomes y-3=4 if we square both sides. Now just simplify. y=7

@tomatoes124

sqrt(x-2)+x=0

sqrt(x-2)=-x

Square both sides

x-2=x^2

I don’t want to go any further but X can’t be solved here without an imaginary number

x=.5(1-isqrt(7))
x=.5(1+i
sqrt(7))

So the lowest value of X has to be 2, thus making Y = 7

edit:(put the initial equation into wolfram alpha you will get an imaginary number)

@tomatoes124

unless I misunderstood you the

sqrt(x-2)+x=0

step was not actually a step to solve the problem I was just showing why y=3 would not work as the solution because then the above equation would be true

prior scores …M800 CR530 W680… really hoping to break 700 with CR this time. studied using all ten blue book tests, but feel like I will be borderline.

@tomatoes124
No, 3 does work, but the question asked the lowest possible value, which is 2

@hiDreamer Not true. The y side can be made 0 with 3=y, but you cannot make the statement true for the x side based on the y side coming out to 0. Therefore, 3 doesn’t work.

Did anyone get a weird reading section about coral fish, and there was a graph of ratios with it?? If so, is it a possible experimental section?

@hiDreamer if y=3 the x side would not be true. The lowest Y value is 7

@gasenioryear
in increase from 530 to 700 would be amazing! good luck!

@tomatoes124

I put 3 also, but it is wrong. You can do the algebra like everyone is saying or you could just take the easy way out and graph the equation. The graph does not exist below y=7. However, because this question was probably listed as difficult, it increases the chances of a better curve (maybe idk).

The question was worded just so it could trip us up.
