OCTOBER SAT Subject Test: Biology E/M

Was the middle ledge question in the M section?

I remember answering that the birds that usually occupy the higher ledges will be on the high ledges on the middle ledge and the bird that occupy the lower ledges will occupy the lower ledges on the middle ledges
could be wrong though…

hope everyone did well

nah, the ledge was part of the general 60. and yeah, i put the same as you, dream. :]

Are you sure?
I put that neither will occupy the middle ledges.
I don’t even think that threre were different levels on the middle legde, but only one level.

look at this article I found online I thibk it supports my answer:
(read related results on page 11)

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2120/is_2_80/ai_54336617/pg_11?tag=artBody;col1

i put the same as dreambig and mellamokiwi.
dont know if it’s right… sure hope so tho!

for advantages of E coli it was something about how it only needs galactoside in the presence of lactose. For the galactoside one about RNA and before and after i was pretty clueless…i think i guessed RNA inhibition before lactose…for the ledge question i said that the red/black gulls would occupy the wider/narrower part of the middle ledge (whichever the red and black gulls were related to according to the second graph).

did anyone get like a whole lot of E’s on this test.
that’s the main thing i was freaking out about the whole time… blahhh

miracleboy and everyone else--

For anyone who is thinking about taking/retaking this exam, here is what I call my quick and efficient method of studying:

(minimum time required=2 weeks before the test)
However more time is always better. Two months of adequate review is always better than two weeks, right?

Please note that cramming is not the best method to retain or prepare for any test, but sometimes when you’re pressed for time or hate studying over a long period of time for just one exam that takes place in an hour on a random saturday in your life that you won’t bother to remember anyhow, it’s the key in making things work.

Method for studying for SAT II or AP Biology Tests

Grab the AP Biology Cliff’s book and read it through from beginning to end. Be sure to PERUSE THE BOOK! Don’t just skim or assume that you know it all!!! Also, do all the multiple choice questions and READ ALL THE EXPLANATIONS (this is a very useful way to study) EVEN IF YOU GOT THE QUESTION RIGHT!

Do this all the way until the night before the test as I have done. Surprisingly, most of what I read WAS on the October 2008 test lol. :P

Alternatively, on the last day or week if you are incredibly tired of reading cliff’s, skim these notes, courtesy of anhtimmy of the CC forums and read up some ecology because he didn’t bother to take notes on it. Link below:

http://www.fastpdf.com/results/80925183527336/Biology.pdf

WEEK BEFORE TEST-(Nobody probably even thought this up, but I did)

Take advantage of FREE material!!!

Go onto sparknotes and take their free SAT II review questions on each section. Then, go to books.google.com and search for SAT II Biology w/limited preview option and click on the link that will take you to the practice examinations. YOU MAY NOT GET ALL THE QUESTIONS. However, you WILL get most if not all parts to the test. I did this for REA biology prep and barron’s for free online.

Consider checking [BiologySAP|AP Biology Notes, Animaitons, Help Center](http://www.biologysap.com/)

Final Tips and Suggestions

Be crazy and passionate about studying even if you don’t feel like it. Make it an addiction (i know this is hard to imagine). Read and take tests compulsively. Just remember, at least by test day, you won’t have the jitters.

Touch up on ANYTHING you don’t understand and go talk to you biology teacher, friend, whatnot, etc. about it. Spend time to understand if you even consider spending time on something.

Don’t worry. Use the time to study instead!!! :D

Think positively. The glass is half full is better than being half empty.

That’s all I have to say. I’m hoping I got 800 by studying like this. I’ll let you know what I get. Maybe this post should be stickied.

hey davezhan, what’d you get for the question about the bird ledge?

everyone i’ve spoken to got something different for the bird one. im guessing i got that wrong…up to 3 wrongs now :[

So, any guesses to the score range of skipping 1 and missing 5 on Biology M?

davezhan, make the offical complete guide to SAT II Biology E/M :P

Why are people saying that they are going to cancel their scores?

I thought that college board implemented a new system of score selection, in which you could pick which score you could send to colleges.
Could some please clarify this for me?

Yeah, don’t cancel your scores. It looks worse than not sending your score b/c colleges will see that you cancelled it and will think you took the test unprepared. If you do poorly, just dont send those scores in at all. Supposedly you can get 5-7 wrong and still get an 800 with the curve…so I honestly dont think anyone who got 10 or less wrong should even consider cancelling.

what did you guys put for natural genetic recombination in bacteria?

I put conjugation.

Is the ‘frogs secrete urea to conserve water’ choice that you guys are talking about the same choice as ‘tadpoles live in water and frogs live on land’ or were they different choices?

6 max. q’s wrong usually = 800 in ecology
5 max. q’s wrong usually = 800 in microbiology

That’s why I took ecology :D

For the bird ledge question, logically speaking, the birds will naturally assume their respective positions on the middle ledge. e.g. red-legged kittiwakes will nest on higher cliff ledges while black-legged kittiwakes will nest on lower cliff ledges of the intermediate ledges. That’s the answer I got.

btw-thnx for your positive comments. :)

I suggest all worry warts to put off worrying until an hour before your score comes out. :D

Go outside and have some fun instead.

^above post-I think they’re different answers, but that’s only my opinion.

Most people agree with you, davezhan, on the bird question. maybe i DID get it right. :]]

and yeahh…we should stop worrying. theres no point.

Are any of you guys going to retake it?

also are colleges able see if you canceled your score?

no they wont see it. The whole point of canceling it is so they can not see it.
If College Board shows them “canceled” that makes this entire process paradoxical.

About the bird question, I thought that it referred to the scientist introducing ledges of new width, making height irrelevant. Please explain to me if this is not the case (which it appears that it is not).

I was also confused about the blood type question. I believe it said “A man with O negative blood is unlikely to have a child with the blood type…” The options were A, B, then O positive and AB. I put AB, as a man with O blood cannot ever have a child with AB blood. However, I was wondering if this was incorrect as the question used the word “unlikely.”
