Back in the day, my alma mater had a “red carpet society” which paired interested HS seniors with current college freshmen and sophomores for three days/two nights. Students would go to classes on Friday and then experience campus life for the weekend. My H and his roommate hosted regularly and they had a 100% yield rate!
And it’s the nicest large campus in America…in my opinion. And has the top rated food which is an underrated category. Wait til your kid is cranky and calling home all emotional because they have low blood sugar because their school’s food is intolerable and blah.
Even in the dead of July, my S25 was hooked on VT! We actually snuck into the football stadium (there was an open maintenance gate) and that stadium is impressive - he’s watched enough college football to be able to imagine being in person for Sandman. C’mon February decisions!!
What are the rules about talking about race on the regular CC board? I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m honestly unclear.
Statements of fact are OK. Giving a college’s racial breakdown is fine; discussion if it’s plans to change it are not, as an example
And now I kinda want a day-glo orange squid hat.
We visited in the spring (not spring break) and on their actual first day of class in the fall.
We visited over the summer break.
Experiencing Enter Sandman is as incredible as it looks (especially at a night game)! My daughter’s first VT football game was the infamous trouncing of UNC with Mack Brown - the first game post-Covid. It’s become a viral video with everyone jumping in orange. Not an empty seat in the house. Metallica is doing a concert in Lane Stadium in May, where they will no doubt play it live.
One great thing that speaks to the degree of love for VT is that most home games sell out, whether the team is doing well or not. So many alumni are season ticket holders and come back for the home games, they come back for homecoming and the annual remembrance weekend. Over my D’s 4 years there, I’ve really gotten a sense of how much the school means to the students and alumni. It’s something special for sure.
Fingers crossed for February!
My S25 wasn’t interested in VT, but it would have met his sports interest on games. I was a little surprised, as he did tour. I don’t think he ‘s certain what college looks like for him. I think it’s ok to be a little unsure at this point. Applications are in though, did the best with what we know now.
The Big House at Michigan is overwhelming. I entered once as a freshman and promptly turned around and sold all my student tickets thereafter. 107,000 screaming fans? No way. I don’t do crowds. I found that football Saturdays were the best time to grab a library carrel and study in peace and quiet.
I promised DH that I would watch Michigan football with him (on TV) when we retired. And I’ve kept my promise.
GO BLUE!
My DD is a Freshman at VT. She absolutely loves it despite the mediocre football team. Tons of school spirit and down to earth kids. She is living her best life. Hoping my 2026 DD also ends up at VT for Engineering.
f this is your first year, you picked a bad one.
Going on ten. Last year was epic!
Glad to hear. I have a junior Hokie daughter studying engineering. VT is a perfect fit for her. My son submitted his application this week for biology. Fingers crossed.
Wellesley does well with need-based aid (though no college does as well as we parents would like, of course), but they don’t give any sort of other scholarships, whether merit or athletic or anything else.
So the odds of a worldbeating financial offer are, I’m afraid, low.
Just chiming in on this - my kid is going to school down that way, Concord Coach goes right to south station so she takes that and then takes the commuter rail (Providence line, even) to school. It’s very efficient/ direct route, cheap, and safe. I drove to pick her up yesterday, and we realized for this short trip she probably could’ve just done the same to get home (since I go back next week to get her for winter break - that one she is bringing more stuff home so driving makes sense.) (ETA, in case it wasn’t clear from my username, we live in Maine and are very familiar with it being hard to get there from here. )
We qualify for some need based but not a ton. I think we’d get maybe enough to afford it. Maybe.
Well, run Wellesley’s NPC here:
https://npc.collegeboard.org/app/wellesley
No need to guess if it will be affordable, assuming a straightforward financial situation (parents not divorced, don’t own real estate beyond a primary home, don’t own a farm/small business, typical assets for income level) the NPC should give an accurate estimate of your financial aid/net cost of attendance.
