Off-Topic Discussion from "Colleges Crossed Off List or Moved Up After Visiting"

Something like 85% CC students are from out of state. I’m guessing there either was a long weekend or everyone was out skiing/hiking. Or asleep depending on when the OP was there!

Laughing a bit. Sorry, but there are many people out there who don’t find Starbucks appealing nor need it daily. College kids should be poor and make their own in their dorm if they need it.

I wish mine had Dunkin’ instead of Starbucks on campus
Cheaper and better coffee haha

I do drink coffee daily but have never bought Starbucks or Dunkin coffee. Seems like a rip-off compared to the cost of making it at home. Don’t the dining centers at most (all?) colleges offer coffee? Why would you need a Starbucks?

They are usually in the Student Union and Libraries
Some schools have freestanding stores on campus as well
My kids also have/had a Keurig in Dorm

This. CC has a couple on-campus cafes --including a 9 pm-1 am substance free tea house that hosts events like open-mic nights. And at least one independent cafe/bookstore is nearby in downtown Colorado Springs.

Most people who go to Starbucks don’t buy regular coffee…I’ve never been a barista but in my observation maybe 5% of orders are drip coffee… Most people get lattes and cappuccinos often with flavors or other un-coffee related drinks. They also have specific snacks…

A lot more people get regular coffee at Dunkin, but many also get food

Exactly. When my girls go to Starbucks, D29 comes back with something that looks like a chocolate chip milkshake and D26 has some kind of bright green liquid over ice. None of this has anything to do with coffee.

I am familiar with the area. There are several coffee shops close to CC, they just aren’t Starbucks (Rico’s, Ohana, Wild Goose). There is also one on campus. Google maps will let you search for coffee shops near me.

I live adjacent to a very large state university with at least 30k more students than CC, and the campus is quiet on Saturdays. The main part of campus contains academic buildings that aren’t used on weekends, so you don’t see a lot of students. You’ll see more activity on the residential and recreational parts of campus, and around the student apartment complexes, but it’s still quiet. Students are out and about on weekends, just not clustered on campus. There seems to be a general pattern of socializing/partying on Thursday and Friday, sleeping and relaxing on Saturday, and studying on Sunday. Students also have to fit in adulting - just like the rest of us they have laundry, grocery shopping, and cleaning to do once in a while.

The academic calendar also plays a part. You’ll see more students on campus on the weekends during mid-terms and finals. When the weather warms and the grass greens, a lot more students spend time outside.

I don’t think a quiet campus on a Saturday indicates everyone left town.

I just posted as OFTEN parents and students on this topic want to know if there is a vibe on campus on weekends.

1.It was 1 pm on a Saturday.
2. CC was not on a break, and in fact had just started a new block of classes.
3. We drove past the main (classroom) parts of campus and just didn’t see anyone out walking, playing frisbee, tossing balls, cycling.
4. Looking for a Starbucks because that’s what my sister wanted
5. Maybe the students were all skiing, but that gives the interested hs students some info - that the school clears out on weekends to xxx (go home, go skiing, go shopping) or that they are all in the library or their rooms studying.
6. CC is not known as a college for poor kids who can’t afford coffee. In fact, it would be the opposite as a school for rich kids who have cars and the money to go skiing to leave campus on weekends.

Just info. Other schools around here seem to have more activity on weekends, even if it is just drinking coffee or eating outside. Or hs kids touring the school.

My son’s friend went to Colorado College and liked it so much he is moving to CO after graduation (from the East coast).

Total side note, but I lived in Baltimore for 5 years after college. When I got there my buddies and I said hey let’s go find the cool bars around Johns Hopkins and hang out there. We went like 5 times and never found… anybody. It was really weird. Not just bars. Didn’t see anybody hanging around. No foot traffic. Didn’t matter what time of year. In five years none of us ever met a JHU grad, either.

We decided it’s really just a CIA front. An urban Area 51 or something.

We went to an accepted student’s day at Saint Joseph’s University today and we had some great info sessions with students and professors. I felt like my daughter was finally digging in beyond what the dorms look like! She was really impressed with their Pharma/Healthcare business/marketing major and for the first time seemed really interested excited about the academics. She even said that if she likes the school and major she can make any dorm work!

She also liked this part of Philly much more than where Temple is (even though there is plenty to like about Temple as well).

And yes, we located the Starbucks!

I think they could have done a better job putting campus activities/clubs/sports/greek life a bit more front and center - but otherwise it was a good day.

Maybe decision part deux will stick.

A friends D goes to St. Joe’s and is very happy there. Bio major with a nice merit scholarship. I think joining a sorority made a big difference in her social life.

Agree about campuses just being quiet on the weekend, especially in the earlier part of the day! I work at a University with 6500 undergrads where 85% are OOS. It’s very bustling on the weekdays but I did a noon tour with a visiting friend this past Saturday and it was SO QUIET. Also, my own college kid (different school) is often in her dorm on the weekend until mid/late afternoon if she doesn’t have somewhere in particular to be. She’ll sleep in, do laundry, and get started on her work.

They were all at the Crease in Towson.

Yes - I like that they have greek life but no houses. I feel like it helps with a lot of the social and mentoring aspects with a little less of the stuff mom’s worry about! I think this could be a good route for my daughter also. I am certain the support network would help her academically as well.

We liked the area better as well. It is also nice that Drexel, St Joseph’s, and U Penn are all fairly close together.

There was until recently the quintessential college bar literally right across from Hopkins’s campus, PJ’s Pub. A block away, Charles Village Pub.
