I was agreeing with your assessment but trying to make the point diplomatically.
@2labs - What an awesome post-admission report! These are my favorite posts to read here. Congrats on Colby! Our DD felt the same way about many of the schools here (Wesleyan vibe, Davidson was nice environment, student body size was a little small, etc.)
Thanks for sharing your journey with all of us!
It is unfortunate that you missed the Colby art museum which is considered one of the best in the country for a college. The curated exhibitions are interesting as well as informative. The collection is extensive.
The new performing arts facility is also incredible. There is also a large design studio building. It is unfortunate your guide did not take you in that direction as opposed to the athletic facility which had no interest for you.
Do you think the people involved with Temple who might be offended don’t know it’s located in an unsafe area?
I was never much for innuendo when facts were readily available.
I didn’t want to offend the person I was answering. I appreciate you providing some stats too although I think the gun violence one might be missing a few incidents. The non-fatal ones. But the point is made nevertheless.
Thanks hoops dad! I love reading these reports too, so felt I should add to them!
Isn’t St Joseph located in Merion? I always thought Merion was super nice. Am I wrong?
To add another wrinkle to D 24s choice she found out today that she has been accepted to Binghamton’s school of business. Initially she applied to business but was offered Harpur (Arts and Science - economics major). Now that she can be a marketing major she is interested again. Although our campus visit was meh, having a bad tour guide and not being able to major in marketing may have a major impact. So now she wants to look at it with fresh eyes. And we were getting so close to a decision between St Joes and Temple!
Good problem to have, but it never seems to end does it!
Your post got me thinking, I haven’t really pondered how stressful April may or may not be for those of us with lots of balls in the air still. Could be a complete shut-out of course so I know a good ‘’problem’ if that’s the case. Gosh, I keep thinking once decisions are in things will settle down, but maybe I need to set my head differently. Perhaps my username was appropriate after all!
Haha! Seriously. At least some decision needs to be made by May! And yes it is a good problem to have. I can’t imagine also waiting for more RD decisions like some folks. Good vibes to everybody waiting and trying to decide!
We did a lot of traveling last April!
The campus is split by Rt. 1, which is called City Line Avenue (for good reason). One side of the line is the city, the other is Merion Station.
The Merion side is primarily the athletic fields. The Philly side of the road is where everyone lives and works.
The Merion side is very nice. The original location of the Barnes is near the campus, and there are multi-million dollar homes. The scale of the homes is more of an exception than the rule for the area, which is generally more modest outside of a few dozen streets.
The neighborhoods on the Philly side of City Line Ave are less grand…but still generally nice. A lot of twin homes made of stone and slate 100 years ago. They go for $200k-$400k now.
If you keep going south…you quickly get into Overbrook… Where homes go for $100k-$300k. It’s a 5 min bike ride from Merion Station.
Just in case…if you’re thinking about Merion Golf Club…it’s not in Merion, it’s in Haverford, where homes can be had in the $2M-$5M+ range.
I can’t remember exactly when this clicked for me, but it was a while back now. Let’s see, a couple offers in serious contention, then 12 as-yet-unknown decisions, and there are how many weekend days in April? Uh-oh . . . .
Parents who have been through this before seem to report sometimes it gets decided for you, and sometimes in fact it is a mad scramble that goes right down to commit day. Or commit night. Or commit hour. Fun!
Glad I’m finally up to speed. We’ve got a bunch coming. I think in my head I haven’t let myself hope for lots of options, but I did keep April clear just in case.
Spring break is touring for D25 who has a totally different learning curve, this is a blast!
All that aside, doing a mega tour with S24 listening to Inside the Yale Admissions Office podcast is such a special memory. If I could go back in time, I would have loved to have been an admissions officer.
The Merion to Haverford and further on is one of the prettiest areas I have ever seen. The homes are just achingly beautiful - you can just imagine Grace Kelly bounding down the steps in her New Look dress.
Apparently it is a grind sometimes and the pay is not great and it can get depressing sometimes . . . but yeah, I think that too anyway.
There are some very nice areas in suburban Philly.
Grace’s childhood home is in East Falls, which isn’t quite the Main Line.
Choice is nice - but if she prefers St. Joes or Temple, then that’s great too. Congrats to her.
Love to read this report @Luanne ! Thank you! We are headed to UAH in a week, and I’ve been trying to figure out logistics, like where we should eat and where to visit to get a sense of the nearby community. If you have any suggestions, feel free to message me directly, and I would be happy to hear from you.
Was referring to the sports facility.
