Off-Topic Discussion from "Colleges Crossed Off List or Moved Up After Visiting"

We’re heading to Ann Arbor for Admitted Students Day this weekend. S24 was accepted into LSA Honors. Your review makes me even more excited to see the school. Our S24 has competed at UMich for the last three years in Science Olympiad and loves the school but my husband and I are seeing it for the first time. It’s the only school he applied to that we haven’t seen. Thanks again for the detailed description of your Admitted Students Day experience.

Oh wow that’s great - hope you enjoy it! Sounds like your DS could be a tour guide himself given his time there. Congrats to him!

I am laughing that Oxford is 19 (not sure if they are ranked, but still) since a bunch of scenes from the HP movies were filmed there! So yeah, I would say it looks like how people picture Hogwards

Haha I can tell you that #16 is not even a picture of that university!!! That’s the University of Manchester in the UK, not the Manchester University in Indiana!

if you do a quick browser search, dozens of “XXX schools make you feel like you’re at Hogwarts” lists are out there. How to choose?

Could someone create a definitive list like we often see for college rankings?

The included colleges appear to be listed alphabetically.

I am a bozo! I didn’t even notice - makes sense

I did notice “Pittsburgh University” though - which doesn’t exist

And here I thought it was the height (too low) of the shower heads that did it in for her at UAH!

You remember!!

(It wasn’t a plus, certainly.)

Belmont is in Nashville, beautiful campus and much easier to get into than Vandy. Smaller, private school. Just a thought. If looking for an urban smaller private, why not American or GW, or Georgetown in DC?

The one caveat with Belmont is that when they say they’re a Christian college, they mean it, and even though they no longer have ties to a specific denomination they do mean a very particular sort of evangelical-adjacent Christianity. They don’t require students to have any sort of religious faith, but they are very strict about it with their faculty and administrators, and that of course filters into student-faculty interactions.

But yeah, beautiful campus—they must employ a serious army of landscapers.

Yes, you are right, it is a Christian school. Wasn’t sure if that mattered. But the DC schools I mentioned may be an option as well. I am thinking you are trying to stay out of super cold weather? Emory might be another option as well.

It’s interesting. I have a (very) Catholic niece and nephew there now. They love the campus, its location, everything really. I’ll ask about the religious aspects next time the see them. They do manage to make it to Mass. Not sure if that’s at a Newman Center or in town.

This entire board is probably one of the few places on the planet where AO is the opportunity not taken. Me too.
Seems to be a young person’s game though.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Notre Dame described as Catholic Light. Many of the residence halls have a priest in residence and offer daily mass in the dorms, as well as in the chapels every day.
