OFFICIAL 2014 MIT RD Decisions

Waitlisted

Stats:[ul]
[]SAT: 2370 (M - 800, CR - 800, WR - 770)
[]SAT II: Math II - 800, Physics - 800, Chemistry - 800
[]GPA: Probably around 4.6ish
[]Rank: Top 5%
[li]Other Tests (AMC, AP, IB): 7 5’s on AP’s (counting the two physics C’s separately) [/ul]
[/li]

Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Probably the worst of all my applications… the short essay format didn’t really work for me. I did like the poem I wrote for the “Describe the world you come from” question though =)
[]Recs: One good (from physics teacher who had me for 2 years and liked me), one not-so-great (senior year history teacher since of my two humanities courses last year, one teacher retired and one course was online =/)
[]Supplementary Material: Viola and piano music supplements (with a really nice rec from my piano teacher)
[]Summer Activities: Governor’s School, online courses for credit, travel
[li]Hook(recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Math and physics courses at prestigious university with decent grades?
[/li]

[/ul]Personal[ul]
[]High School Type: Competitive public… MIT doesn’t like us much, but a few people are accepted every year.
[]Ethnicity: Asian
[li]Gender: F[/ul]
[/li]

Other[ul]
[]Extracurriculars: Science Olympiad, chamber music, orchestra (as principal violist), musical and other community service, others that I’m too lazy to list
[]Awards: Lots of state and national Science Olympiad awards, ABRSM Grade 8 Piano with Distinction, National Merit Finalist… I guess acceptance into Governor’s School counts?
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I just wasn’t too special… also, weak essays and rec.
[]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] sigh I guess I’m over being waitlisted… I was fairly upset at first, mostly because it was the first decision and many people I know (including one URM who UNEQUIVOCALLY was not deserving) were accepted, but whatever… It really is random. I know many people more qualified than I am who were outright rejected, and people less qualified who were accepted. I guess I’m glad I wasn’t rejected, since the subjective aspect of my MIT application was worse than most of my other schools, so I still have some hope… Anyway, congratulations acceptees! And to those (like me) who weren’t accepted, best of luck for April 1st! =)
