Official ACT Reading Thread April 2013

I also put entrenched and for the last one about the old guy I put something around a halfearted request at reconciliation…Do no know about that though.
Also, did they old guy interpret well as “No” or “I’ll seriously consider it”
I put “No” because it talked about how the light went away from his eyes.

@relativelysmart, I took the ACT once before, in December, and got a 33 composite (35 E, 31 M, 35 R, 29 S). I had a sinus infection the day of the test, though, so I ended up not only feeling awful the whole time but not finishing math or science.

I walked in today hoping for a 35. Walking out, I felt great and after being on CC for a bit, I’ve only found one question I know I’ve gotten wrong (science, but I know I missed more). So I’m now hoping for a 36 but I won’t be at all upset if I end up with a 35.

What can be inferred about the girl’s white shoes?
—I said she felt happy walking down the sidewalk… not sure though :/

Also, for the passage with the 70-year old friend, did you say that when he asked the question about joining him in his new home it was PREDICTABLE but still struggled to answer the question?

@efeens44

I hope you accomplish your goal bro!

@doctorknow96 I also put she felt happy walking down the sidewalk.

No, I but downplaying a painful realization for the old man one becasue he realizes that his freind doesn’t want to live with him. Anyone else get this?

I also got entrenched becasue it said it was “dominating” all the funding and stuff. And the reason for controversial wasn’t right becasue it said the new theory was supported by some elite scientists

Any input on these two hard ones would be great

ACTStudent; if there’s a topic that is strongly accepted by one side and strongly opposed by another, it can be considered to be “controversial”.

con·tro·ver·sial
/ˌkäntrəˈvərSHəl/
Adjective
Giving rise or likely to give rise to public disagreement.

@actstudent I also put downplaying but I believe that doctorknow96 is talking about a different question. The one that had the author’s reaction to the old man asking to move in with him, but the one you’re talking about is the significance of the final 2 lines.

@TenMore I also put “No” for the same reason since it was already evident that the author did not want to move in with the man.

Yes he is talking about a different question… downplaying was definitely the correct answer for that one.

And yeah, the downplayed realization choice was the one I chose.

@relatively smart. It siad “controversial because it was accepted by elite and not accepted by basic scientist.” That is 100 percent incorrect.

I was debating between controversial and entrenched but because of the REASON entrenched was the better chocie.

Didn’t the passage literally state that the concept of string theory was accepted by respectively the elite while other orthodox quasi “common man” scientists found the concept absurd and continued to side with theoretical physics?

I also chose “no”, the one about downplaying the painful realization, and the one that started with entrenched (which was the hardest question in the reading section, in my opinion).

yea i chose the downplayed part, and the entrenched part.

Can someone post the full “entrenched” choice???

In that same passage there was a question that had the answer choices “physics”, “the standard theory”, “gravity” and one more that I forget. What was the answer to that? I don’t remember the actual question.

What were the answer choices for the downplayed part

@ally the answer was gravity
