Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

Hi Conanbot,

I applied to UT Southwestern and they did take about a week to log everything onto my file after they received it. Once the file was completed though they were very fast with their decisions!

Best of luck - this whole process is very nerve wrecking… :(

H

Applied: Scipps, Rockefeller, Harvard, Univ of Washington Seattle, UCSF, UT Southwestern, Cornell Med, UMass Med, BU, Tufts

Interview: Univ of Washington, UT Southwestern, and UMass Med

… still waiting on other schools… :frowning:
I sure am glad though that I found this forum!

in order to maximize the chance of acceptance,

during the interview, should I:

a) make it sound like this school is doubtlessly my top choice and show very much interest in attending the school.

OR

b) ask detailed questions about the program in order to determine its quality and suitability and show that i am very serious about choosing my school and thus career and that im not just blindly choosing them based on prestige.

They don’t really care whether you’ll choose them or not for admission – PhD programs aren’t really concerned with yield or demonstrated interest. You should absolutely ask questions to determine whether the program is right for you. There’s no advantage to being a cheerleader for the program.

Congrat! PatchesNBrownie. When did you hear back from UT southwestern?

UT southwestern already got my LOR, but still didn’t receive my TOEFL score even I sent it around early November. I still received email that my application is still not complete, but it stated that my application can be reviewed with unofficial TOEFL score.

Hi Conan!

I got the invitation back on Dec 23rd by e-mail. I am hoping though that the admission committees keep sending out invitations in waves - otherwise, from reading this forum and seeing how everyone else got invited to the schools I applied to, I probably have a handful of rejection letters coming my way!

Ahh I guess we’ll just have to hang in tight until end of January to collect all our answers…

This may seem like a silly question, but to all those you have gotten interview notifications (especially by phone), have any of you received emails regarding booking of airline tickets, etc.? I was notified by Sloan-Kettering on the 24th, but I haven’t received any information yet and the interview weekend isn’t to far away (Jan20th-22nd). I am not even sure if they are going to be paying for my ticket!

They have been pretty clear with me about paying for travel stuff. So far the first two universities (both public) have travel authorization numbers and contracts with travel agents. The other school (private) will reimburse me for the cost of the ticket. If you haven’t made arrangements yet, call the program coordinator and see whats up.

You were notified Dec 24th? Christmas Eve? Impressive. That said, the fact that what amounts to an administrative e-mail sent by someone’s assistant has not been sent between Christmas Eve and New Years day is not at all shocking. While I do admire everyone’s grad school mentality that you should be working these days (I know I have been) keep in mind that the administrative offices probably take this time off. Relax, it’s coming. I personally did not apply to Sloan-Kettering last year, but I would say with 99% certainty that they are paying for your ticket and Jan 20th is plenty of time to get this all worked out.

Hello everyone, especially those of you who applied (and even already gotten interviews from!) UC-SF biomedical sciences program -

When you log into your online application page, does your status still say “Under Review”? Does that mean that I have yet to be rejected? :-P

I think I am obsessing - those of you who already know your results, please let me know!

Thank you :)

Mine still says “Under Review”. But I’m not too sure if that means anything. Several people I know who applied to UCSF BMS have already received interview offers…

re. sloan kettering, they did say the would be paying for tickets and hotel accommodation… i guess they ll work out details in a bit… see you there prash07 :)

dang it! :(

For those that were invited to sloan-kettering, were any of those through Cornell Weill? I know Cornell was giving out interview requests around this time last year. Has anyone heard from them?

Hey everyone,

First off, HAPPY 2009! I am SO happy the holidays are over, since I know after New Years is when the invites really start rolling in!

I applied to PhD Neuro Programs: WUSTL, Cornell Weill, Penn, Harvard, NYU, Georgetown, Yale, Emory, UWisconsin, Columbia, UChicago, Duke, Brandeis. Already got an interview at Penn.

3.73 Cum GPA (Liberal arts college), 3.83 GPA Major
Research exp: 1 year Honors research in neuro (received honors), 1 Summer - Harvard Med SHURP Program in very popular neuro lab, 1 semester + 1 summer in biochem lab at my college, 1 summer - Los Alamos National Laboratory, and 1 year now in R&D at Teva Pharmaceuticals (Graduated May08).
GRE: 570V, 750Q, 6.0AW (So, I guess I can write, but not read according to this standardized test…NICE).
LORS: 1 Professor at College, Advisor at Harvard Med, Advisor at Los Alamos Natl Lab, and my Honors Research Advisor
Publicatons: First author abstract at SFN 2008

So, what do you think my chances are for Yale and Emory? BC I had an oh crap moment. I had sent e-mails to some PIs at Harvard Med and Yale - only bc I know the chair of the Neuro Program at Harvard, Gary Yellen, and thought I’d send a remember me email. And the ones I sent to Yale were the PIs I was interested in. I did this right when I submitted the application. And I just looked at the one email and realized there was a typo (I spelled interested wrong…I miss an e…and realized it COULDVE been better written, less choppy). Will this hurt me for getting in there??? I never heard back from this person, who I’m 99% sure is on admissions, although I heard back from some nice people at Yale. Hoping this means, it got sent straight to trash, since I’m sure they receive TONS of these from applicants.

I’ve been analyzing this for like a weeek now! :frowning: Hoping ths doesnt hurt me!

hey alleycat,
i’m also applying to neuroscience programs (i’ve applied to 6 of the same programs you’re applying to) and i don’t think you need to stress out too much. these people get A LOT of emails and they probably just mentally noted that they received your email and you’re interested in their program when reviewing your file. i wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t reply back to your email because they’re just so busy and if they’re interested in you, they will acknowledge your email at the interview and answer all your questions then. i honestly think that your emails can only help once you get the interview stage. i’m not sure what your chances are into any particular program. i think you have a good chance but the admissions committee members are experts at reading between the line and evaluating your potential which is something that’s not written in black and white. anyway, good luck with your apps!!! and don’t stress too much. it’s totally out of our control at this point and just hope for the best.

Phanta: I applied to Weill Cornell, Gerstner Sloan Kettering, NYU Sackler Institute, Albert Einstein, and Columbia. So far I’ve only heard back from Cornell (on Dec 18th by email). I’m going for an interview in mid Feb.

GPA 4.0 (small state university in ohio)
2 1/2 years research (undergrad and currently completing master’s in pharm/tox)
GRE 540V, 750Q, 3.5A (I suck at timed writing, but I think my personal statement was good)
Biochem GRE 660 (90th percentile)
good LORs
2 papers in the works, not yet submitted though :frowning:
Lots of posters at regional meetings, 1 natl meeting

I’m so glad I found this forum!! Good luck everyone and congrats to all those who’ve already received interviews!

411SL, which department did you apply to for Weill Cornell?

I applied to the Pharmacology dept.

has anyone heard from Weill Cornell BCMB? I can’t take the waiting!!
