Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

noface,

I don’t know which bioengineering programs you applied to, but I have not heard anything yet from UCSD bioengineering, CalTech bioengineering, or MIT biological engineering. I also applied to a few BME programs (WashU, Columbia) and the Chem & Biomolecular Engineering program at Johns Hopkins, but I have not heard back from any of these either.

Hi JonStewart and cazcazcaz!

I received interview invitations from UCSF and UC Berkeley Biophysics as well! I’m an international and quite nervous about that.

Congrats for everyone with interviews and best of luck to you all! :)

I’m not sure where to direct this question - so here it is, to everyone who is studying OR interviewing at Weill Cornell for PhD.

(1) Second Choice interviews - Did anyone here get invited to go on Second Choice interviews? How does it work and is it pretty much structured? I have yet to respond because I do not have the officially itinerary for Immunology interviews and I do NOT want to double book… Anyone know if the second choice interview time block is already scheduled not to interfere with any crucial activity for first choice program?

(2) Housing - How difficult is it to get family housing? I have a domestic partner (qualified by the “family housing policy” found on WCMS’ housing website) but do they give priority to married couples or medical students or something? I am imagining it will be pretty much impossible to find an apartment on my own a PhD candidate’s stipend… or is it? If you have any knowledge on this, could you please please reply or PM me?

Thank you so much! I am excited and nervous about the interview - NYC is AMAZING! :)

Interview: Scripps, UW Seattle, Weill Cornell, UT Southwestern, UMass Medical, BU Medical, Tufts Sackler
Rejected: UCSF
Waiting :(: Harvard, Rockefeller

Hi PatchesNBrownie,

When did you receive the invitation from Scripps? I applied for their PhD program in biophysics track but have not heard from them. ETS did not send my subject score to Scripps until I was aware that my app status was incomplete, and then I called ETS to ask for resend…Hope it would not delay the review of my application. I attached copies of my score reports in my app package.

Thanks

niwhu, I too applied to the biophysics track and have not heard back yet. Seems like a lot of the other tracks have announced interviews, but I have not heard of any from the biophysics track thus far :S

Hi niwhu,

Scripps e-mailed me on January 7th. I applied to the Immunology Track, so it’s probably different. Also, I had my GRE scores sent in right before the deadline, and they do take a while to receive all the scores. I think they may very well be one of the schools that get ETS reports on bimonthly reports or something (I read about on the ETS website?) - when I kept calling Scripps about my GRE scores, they said for the longest time that they are still waiting on ETS reports for over half of their applicants.

Best of luck!!

Does anybody know why Stanford does admissions like this? Why not notify everybody at the same time?

How do “wave” admissions generally work? If anybody could shed light on this whole process it would be helpful. Thx

treebecca-
I just PMed you then saw this. Most schools only have a dinner the first night. I had the same problem you had with NIH/Hopkins and UNC last year. I scheduled Hopkins before I got a call from UNC. UNC allowed me to come in late and miss the dinner. Most schools would want to steal a student from Hopkins, so they will probably work with you. NIH/Hopkins took a group to BWI from Hopkins so I just went with them. I got into Chapel Hill and a group of students suprised me and took me out individually, since I missed the dinner. I still got an acceptance to UNC immediately following the interview.

In summary, I would see if CMU would accommodate you. I think the Hopkins people have a say in admissions. If you are missing CMU interviews, then you could think about switching Hopkins around.

Also, when I made the request I told UNC they were one of my top choices (they were), so I really wanted to make the interview.

Hello all. It’s been a while since I’ve been to CC, and I chose to make a new username. Though I googled my old name and found lots of cool posts! haha

Anyways, I’ll post my stats and stuff now.

Status: Senior; Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick/Piscataway
GPA: 3.672/4.0 - Science/Non-science GPAs are within .05 of each other
GRE General: 560 V, 770 M, 5.0 writing (77%, 88%, 77% respectively)
GRE Subject (BioChem): 530, 53%

Research is strong. I’ve been at the same lab since freshman year, did two years as work study and then junior/senior years as undergraduate research. A’s on all three semester papers so far. I couldn’t afford to do a summer program (needed to work to make money, not break even), but my data is being used in my PI’s NIH Grant proposal for Feb. 2009, which I wrote in my research statements.
Good rec. letters - I’ve seen the one from my PI and it’s very good.

Perhaps not 100% important, but my ECs are good at Rutgers too. I’m President of the Busch Campus Council (one of the campus’ governing councils) and thus sit as a member that sets the agenda for our Student Assembly (which encompasses all of Rutgers). Also, I serve on a student leader cabinet with our VP for Student Affairs and discuss, over dinner, policy changes that affect students with various high administrators.

Additionally, I serve on the NJ Higher Education Student Assistance Authority - Student Advisory Committee, which is a committee of about 20 students from across NJ that advise on financial aid policy. ([HESAA - Members](http://www.hesaa.org/index.php?page=student-assistance-board))

I’ve applied to UPenn-BGS, UMich, WUSTL-DBBS, Weill Cornell, Rockefeller, Princeton, and Rutgers. I was offered an interview at UPenn-BGS, and was rejected at UMich, but that’s because one of my letter writers refused to submit online, so my app was incomplete…

I know my GRE Subject score is low, but I guess my statements and rec. letters were strong enough to get an interview at UPenn-BGS, which is a really good school.

Any thoughts on my chances at my other schools? My top three are WUSTL-DBBS, Rockefeller, and UPenn-BGS.

I noticed that at least a few people have applied to schools in the UK- Oxford/Cambridge. What does everyone think about UK degree in comparison to a US degree?

MCTitans,

It’s good to see a fellow Rutgers student on this forum. Overall, you have good stats. Congrats on UPenn interview.

Yeah, not too many Rutgers students here, in the undergrad forums or graduate ones, but I’m very happy with my Rutgers experience. You in NB?

neurohopeful, i dont think anybody would say that oxford/cambridge is bad. I thought about applying to these schools (application was free for the program I’m thinking of) but the UK degree is very different from the USA and ultimately I wanted a US degree.

the UK degree is 1-2 years shorter. you generally dont do rotations (maybe there are exceptions) and I have heard that you just start working on your thesis right away. From what I’ve heard, the US programs just give you better training as a graduate student. That being said, these are some of the best schools in the world and I’m sure people receive excellent training at them. Also, it’s easier for me to feel at home in a US program because it’s what I’m used to. I know what to expect.

One final thing is funding at these universities. Funding is very limited and pretty much the only way to finance your studies at these universities is through extremely competitive grants such as the Gates Cambridge scholarship. If you are competitive for these scholarships, it’s great, but I suspect I’m not quite up to par with most of the students who win.

I’ve heard that if you go to Oxford/Cambridge, it prepares you to be an European academic. US schools obviously prepare you to be an American academic. It’s easier to be successful in the environment you were trained in.

I’m sure other people have some advice on the subject, but hopefully this helps answers your question a little.

Hey all. Congratulations to everyone with their interviews/acceptances.

Applied: UCSD, UCSF, UWash, UChicago, UPenn, Duke, Emory
Interviews: UWash Genome Sciences, UPenn CAMB, Emory Genetics/Molec.
Rejections: To be determined

Just got an email yesterday from UPenn inviting me to interview for Feb. 5-7. I thought I wasn’t going to get one since it seemed like people had already heard from them. I guess this shows to never loose hope.

The only problem is Emory and Penn have scheduled interviews for the same days. I already affirmed that I would attend the interview at Emory about a week ago. I emailed Penn to see if there were any alternate interview weekends and if this was an option.

Anyone else having problems scheduling interviews?

Damn, it would have been cool to meet you at UPenn interview DNAdude! My interview is Feb. 5-7 also. I haven’t heard back from anyplace else, but all other interviews won’t be then. Princeton doesn’t even interview, and neither does Rockefeller (I think at least). Did you apply to UPenn CAS or the Med School BGS program? Good luck with everything!

Penn BGS also has a Feb 26-28 “Recruitment weekend”, which I get is their version of “Interview Weekend”

MCTitans,

I actually graduated from Rutgers-NB in may '07, and was working as a tech on busch campus until recently. Good luck to you and to everyone with upcoming interviews.

Everyone, keep the hope alive.

Princeton interviews- rockefeller does not, although they do have visiting weekends that involve interviews.

Thanks for the update, ec1234. I guess I got the two confused, though if I were accepted at Rockefeller, I would definitely visit. My best friend got into UC-Berkeley without an interview, but he’s got a Gates Scholar interview and a 4.0 in chemistry and mathematics at Rutgers-NB, so he will probably get Gates (Rutgers tied Harvard with most students from a US school to Gates - we had 4).

I’m really waiting on WUSTL-DBBS and Rockefeller foremost, then Weill Cornell and Princeton next.

I wonder what you all think about US News & World Report graduate program rankings?

I guess I ask because I have been offered interviews for schools that are ranked #8 and #18, and I thought I should have a good chance at getting interviews at a #26 (Weill Cornell) and #29 (Northwestern). Yet, I haven’t received invites from them and it doesn’t sound like they are handing out anymore.

Are there other sites that give grad school rankings that you find more accurate?
