Telephone call yesterday for Princeton interview, molecular biology.

Hi manofscience, I applied to Rockefeller and still haven’t heard back, either. Our lab just submitted another manuscript (me the second author) a week and a half ago and I wanted to add it to my application file so I sent them the submission information, and this is what I got back. This was 6 days ago (Jan 21).

“Thank you for your updated information. It has been included in your application file.
Decisions are currently being made and you will be notified by mid February.”

This made me really hopeful, but I have not heard anything yet… Maybe I’m on the wait list, or maybe the lady didn’t want to burst my bubble and just wanted me to wait to get that rejection letter.

Either way, I think we’ll know by mid Feb. :)

Update: declined interview offers from Yale BBS and Princeton Mol. bio, hopefully that will open up another spot for those interested.

Titans: I haven’t really messed around too much on the website, so I don’t know all the features… I didn’t know you could see which keywords people use while searching for you!

xiv: thanks for the advice. I’m really nervous!

Rockefeller has sent out acceptances to many people already… but a lot of people I know tell me that they won’t go there.

ymmit, you were at the ACCESS weekend yesterday weren’t you?

Is anyone either at a Stanford neuro lab or going to the Stanford Neuro invitation on March 4th?

If so, would you let us know if the neuroscience invitation notifications are finished?

I am unable to schedule my MIT invitation because I do not know where I am flying from- will it be from Stanford or another place?

And nobody answers phones at Stanford either, which I find to be rather odd.

I understand that some people (albeit I believe it’s a small number) have already been invited but I am hoping that they are not done yet.

Seems like UCSF Neuroscience is dishing out their rejections today. :(

What were the ACCESS interviews like? I go on mine the first weekend in Feb. I was wondering if colleges do rolling admissions? I mean, when you go the first recruitment weekend, do you have a better chance of getting an acceptance?

Since most everyone else has been posting their stats:

So far:

Applied: UWashington Seattle, Vanderbilt IGP, UCLA ACCESS, UCSD, Colorado Boulder, Duke CMB, UNC BBSP, Chicago Molec Biosciences, UVirginia

Interviews: Vanderbilt IGP, UCLA ACCESS, Colorado Boulder, Duke CMB, UNC BBSP, Chicago Molec Biosciences, UVirginia

Rejections: UWashington Seattle

And I haven’t heard from UCSD

I thought I was using strategy when I scheduled my top schools as the last I’d interview at so that I’d have more time to get used to the interview process. This strategy might backfire on me!

411SL, i would email sackler about your feb 5/6 interview, if you havent. I hadn’t heard anything either so i emailed them today and they had to change my interview date to the next week.

“Rockefeller has sent out acceptances to many people already… but a lot of people I know tell me that they won’t go there.”

Shjnb: Why not?

I’ve heard that it’s better for postdocs.
But who knows.

yes, biostudent, I was there- I’ve PMed you.

I just got an email that I’ve been nominated by the adcom for a graduate fellowship at Vanderbilt that will significantly increase my stipend, if I choose to go there. The thing is, I haven’t gone to my interview yet. What’s up? Anyone else get this?

Waa??? First off, congratulations ymmit. I hadn’t heard about any sort of fellowship at Vanderbilt, though they are one of my top favorites and I have already been offered acceptance. Did they mention what the name of the fellowship was? Do you have a different source of funding that merited a ‘top up’ bonus?

Has Northwestern finished notifying people for interviews?

ymmit, my d also got the same e-mail you evidently got from Vandy. She interviews there in March.

Spartan- The ACCESS interviews were with such a diverse pool of faculty and applicants that I can only imagine “what they were like” for everyone. For myself, the faculty were relaxed and congenial, mostly trying to sell me on UCLA and their lab than anything else. I talked about my research, but they didn’t grill me. I had one interview that was so-so, but for the most part everyone else seemed to agree that they all went well. As for the “early weekend” thing, I heard a graduate student say that the most promising candidates are invited to the first pair of weekends, so I’d say you have as good a chance as those who went to the first one.

This is just something that ACCESS does, as far as I know, but as for other schools- I really can’t imagine that they would allow something as trivial as a choice of interview weekend have any type of weight on an applicant’s admissions. I think that if you are given several weekends in your offer, then you can be sure that you should have an equal chance as those at the earlier one that was offered to you. The only way you would have a worse chance than other applicants is if the school invited some to an earlier weekend of which you were not informed in your offer. Otherwise, don’t worry about it.

belevitt- Congratulations on your acceptance to Vandy! I’m not sure what happened, but I don’t have any special circumstances and it doesn’t make much sense to tell an un-interviewed candidate this, in my opinion. I guess I will ask them about it when I go visit.

Has anyone heard from UArizona or Ohio State genetics programs yet?

Shoebox-

The UA is pretty slow with reviews. Ecology/evolutionary biology just started reviewing applications last week (my PI is on that adcom). There’s a big faculty overlap between the two, so I really wouldn’t worry yet since the site says Feb. 1st notifications. If I spot any of the program coordinators, I’ll ask them.

Good luck! I love Tucson and the UA has been terrific to me (BS in MCB/EEB, currently MS in EEB). Let me know if you have any other questions about Tucson/UA.
