Anyone have any opinions about Harvard BBS? It looks like I’ll be going there.

While we’re doing this, I might as well ask. Anyone have any insights about Baylor COM?

Although you probably already know this, Baylor is a christian university. I say this because I DID NOT know that when I applied. This fact helped me decide which interviews to decline though
I also heard some pretty bad things about Baylor (not going to repeat them) from other professors when I told people where I was applying.

Baylor College of Medicine isn’t affiliated with Baylor University (they were like forty years ago, though).

As the dust settles…

Applied: UW Biochemistry, Harvard Biophysics, MIT CSBi, Caltech Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Stanford Biophysics, UCSF iPQB, UNC BBSP

Interviews: UW, MIT, Caltech, Stanford, UCSF, UNC (declined)

Accepted: UW, Caltech, Stanford, UCSF

Rejected: Harvard, probably MIT (it has been a month since the interview)

So, it’s going to come down to Caltech or Stanford, it seems…

Thank you so much aceflyer. Mollie, the labs I am interested in at MIT are very big name PIs. At the interviews, they were very accessible and I spent a lot of time talking with them but I am wondering if that is the case once you join the program. A couple of students said that they were satisfied with the amount of interaction but there were no students to be seen from a couple of labs at the grad student party. So I am not sure.
I will also email the specific students but I wanted to know what your thoughts were. Thanks!

Just a followup for Mollie and Newuser- thanks. You guys were correct, apparently the academic world runs on a July 1 to June 30 financial year and that was the source of the apparent discrepancy. Nothing like making a stressful process just a little more stressful.

so im having some trouble deciding between yale and upenn for developmental biology… i was wondering if anyone had thoughts about the merits/disadvantages of either school…
i loved both programs, felt upenn had more of a personal touch (got a handwritten card from the program director just yesterday) but liked the faculty at yale better… im really confused so any opinions would be really appreciated

That’s going to be an individual PI thing, not a departmental thing. I was definitely satisfied with the amount of attention I got as an undergraduate, if that means anything.

I would definitely email the students. I know I’m happy to email with students who are thinking of rotating in my lab, and I think I give accurate and useful information.

That’s my program – I’m happy to answer questions.

Hi mollie. I guess I would like your general impressions of BBS: things you like and don’t like. Thanks!

So I’m leaning towards Princeton Mol Bio (over Yale). Is there anything I should know about Princeton before I sign my life away? :)

Princeton is in New Jersey.

Haha…good one shnjb. Having spent good 5 years of my life in New Jersey, I am used to people, especially New Yorkers, cracking jokes on NJ. One goes: New Yorkers are perpetually hopeless. At the end of the tunnel, there’s New Jersey!!

Princeton is pretty and posh.

Whatever happened to that funny Harvard/Caltech/MIT post about the 10 year BS with quadruple majors and missionary telling him that Harvard is the best in the world?

hey guys, I received an interview invitation from a school that’s pretty far. I’m going to take a bus there next week, the only thing though is that I’ll be in a bus for a total of 10 hrs that day, 5 hrs going and 5 coming back. I also found out that I’ll be interviewing with about 5 to 7 professors. Any advice???

Haha shnjb I think it got removed… I got a kick out of it though. It’d be sad if he was legit.

Univ_student: Is the school paying for the trip? If so then I’d suggest flying. If they don’t want to pay for a plane ticket then at least look into lodging for a night (see if they’ll pay for that).

Or if they’re not willing to pay for lodging either, see if they can set you up with a current grad student in the program for the night.

I removed it. It mapped to an IP address in Illinois, where I think they know better.

brain_aging, I promise I will get to your question tomorrow – it’s been a beyond hectic day, and I want to actually talk about BBS in a thoughtful way, which I don’t think I can do right now. :)

Looking for suggestions:

So I interviewed at Boston U. for Bioinformatics about 4 weeks ago. At the event they said that we would be getting a reply in three weeks. Well we just entered week 4. I was wondering If it is appropriate to call the office and see what up??? (this week), Or wait till week 5??? (or should I be assuming a rejection???)

Also has anyone heard from NYU Computational biology???. couple of my friends call the grad. school of arts and sci. They said noticies began to go out monday for all departments.

Anyone apply to SUNY Downstate or Stony Brook for biomedical eng.??? any info.???

KD1029, i personally love princeton town, completed with its own train. also its interview weekend was way more classy&cozy&personal and intellectually stimulating (but not by hammering profs research topics) than others.
ps: myself did not apply to yale (too big & too cold)
