Was wondering if anyone knows anything about an upcoming Cornell BBS interview weekend. I interviewed there in early march and they said that my application is on ‘hold’ until they’ve interviewed more candidates.

I’m just wondering if anyone has heard back from the Molecular and Cellular Biology program at Dartmouth? I interviewed a little over a month ago but I know the last interviews were held last weekend. Any word yet?

I didn’t realize there was a Cornell BBS program…

i got into the northwestern ibis after the second set of interviews. other than that i applied to mainly bioengineering programs. does anyone have an opinion on wash u bme vs ibis for me?

Thanks for your information, mollie! I’m looking to avoid the teaching requirement if possible: I’ve been a TA for 9 semesters already!

BioX: I was at BBS in February so we did not meet.

Well, the nanocourses cover one topic very thoroughly, with about 3 hours of lecture the first day and 2-3 hours of discussion the second day (for example, I took one recently on evo/devo that was basically just an introduction to the topic). Quarter courses tend to be on broader topics – I took one on neurodegenerative disease last year that covered a different neurodegenerative disease each session. Overall, the hours spent per credit are approximately equivalent – a regular course will meet every week of term for 2-4 hours, a quarter course will meet for half a term for 2 hours per week, and a nanocourse will meet twice for a total of 7-8 hours.

Yes, you’re provided with a list of the community service options. Undergraduate courses choose their own TAs – I applied for one this year but didn’t get it, because a bunch of postdocs applied and were chosen over grad students. I should also mention that you can’t be paid for your required TA experience, just for TAing you do above and beyond the requirement.

Thank you so much for the information, mollie.

Hi Guys, Im new in here. I guess a lil late to start off!
Im an international applicant.
Have got admits from UPitt(interviewed), UMass and U of Miami, Florida (interviewed).
Rejects from UT Southwestern at Dallas, UC Davis, George Washington University and UT Houston.
Has any intl student heard from/interviewed with Northwestern (IGP), Vanderbilt (IGP), Dartmouth (MCB) or Albert Einstein (Biomed Sciences)?
I guess Leukemia and me, share most of the univs we are waiting to hear from!
Im getting totally worked up about this application verdict stuff.

Hello Microphage,

Einstein interviewed me last week. I was interviewed by a potential advisor and suddenly found international students could be admitted ONLY when a certain PI promises to sponsor you. That means, rotation is not allowed for international students. I felt pretty bad about this. I won’t go there even if they accept me.

I applied to Northwestern and Vanderbilt IGP as well. Still, no news from them. Basically I think I will go to SBU/CSHL, UMass Med, or Mount Sinai. How about you?

microphage: I know other internationals who have interviewed and been accepted already from Northwestern (IGP), Vanderbilt (IGP) and Dartmouth (MCB). Sorry, but hope the information helps.

Turabit:

I’m fairly sure they did not when I got in there. I sent my polite decline via email, i’m sure they’ll accept your response that way.

turabbit: I don’t remember getting one either.

Hey… international applicants!!!

Have any of you heard from UTMB (phD)… I gave my interview 5 weeks back and still haven’t heard anything from them.? U think it means a reject???

leukemia - the impression i have is that UMass Med is a very fast-growing medical institute. As one HHMI investigator there says, “HHMI seems to recognize that UMass Medical School is on a very fast upward trajectory toward becoming one of the worlds leading medical research institutions.” If I finally prefer UMass, this would be one very important factor. The location may also be important since I love Boston. Sorry I don’t know much about the other two schools.

Anybody has any comment on UMass?

As an international, i haven’t heard from Dartmouth MCB too, neither from U Colorado Boulder MCDB, U Oregon Biology and BCM CMB.

Any internationals know what’s going on in Baylor CMB? I know some people get in and some people get rejected. But for me, no news at all.

maryannmanavalan ,
I know an international applicant got offered from UTMB about a month ago, who was phone-interviewed.

danielge,
I applied to Baylor CMB too. I was rejected a month ago and transferred to my second choice - DevBio, but still there’s no news till now. I guess I am rejected. That doesn’t really matter because I really want to go to NY.

UMass Med is growing very fast during the past decade. However, its research focused on RNA biology/Immunology/Neuroscience, which are not truly attracting me. But definitely, there are some top labs, especially in Program in Gene Expression & Function, and Program in Molecular Medicine. Their stipend is very generous but I am not sure if I like the rural life in Worcester. I still cannot make up my mind yet.

Uh, I wouldn’t really call Worcester ‘rural’.

ouch…!!! that doesn’t sound too good… !!! thanks anyway…!!! Any idea how good University of Oklahoma is for biomed.???

Aceflyer,
I am sorry I have never been there, but some friends there spoke of life inconvenience in Worcester. How would you describe the environment around UMass Med?

leukemia, their strength in RNA biology is exactly what i’m interested in, so it can be a perfect fit. as for BCM dev biol (which is also my 2nd choice), i asked Catherine Tasnier who told me last week that i was rejected. but it’s really strange that i haven’t heard from my 1st choice…

as i recall, worcester is the second largest city in new england. what kind of inconvenience did your friends say?
