Official Class of 2013 Brown Waitlist Thread

AmbitiousMind, you mentioned getting C’s on your report card this term. That is curious to me, I mean you must have had really good grades to get on the wait list at Brown, a few C’s seems like a big drop.

Pea - you can easily get a C for missing a few classes of work. But it’s not like they’re permanent C’s as it seems, but C’s that will be brought up to assumably an A whence the missing coursework is turned in.

I know a lot of kids who went on college trips and had this happen to them. Think of it as a placeholder grade : )

Fenton >> could be.

I am very surprised that your teachers would give you “0s” for missing work if you could document that you were visiting colleges. I teach high school seniors, and we know to expect absences this time of year; what else are you guys supposed to do? If it was to excess, though, alarms might have gone off, but otherwise, it’s normal. Have you spoken to your teachers? Can you document that you were visiting schools? My school has a policy for seniors’ visiting schools, and what you describe is not fair…

@sviola: Your post was very touching and it definitely made me feel a lot better. When I got home yesterday, I took a much needed run around my neighborhood–just to relieve my mind. After that, I felt so much better and I felt like I can overcome this waitlist. Brown was one of my top choices and to be waitlisted is an honor–I applied (not even sure why) to a few other ivies and I was rejected by every single one of them! Brown, the only one I really wanted to attend in the first place, waitlisted me so I definitely took that as a sign that perhaps Browm may be the right fit for me. I’m very excited about my current school (Northwestern) especially becasue of the strong theatre program and the simply distribution requirements, compared to other schools. I really do hope that you are admitted; I’m sure your boyfriend must have felt horrible, but it’s great to see that you’re not holding any grudges. This happen for a reason, I guess. Good luck–Brown will truly be the one missing out on such a great person if they don’t accept you.

@Pea: I didn’t receive those “C’s” on my report card–they are my “current” fourth marking period grades because I have make-up quizzes/tests to complete. The interesting thing is this though: at my school a “C” is anything from a 78% - 85%–my “C’s” range from an 80% - an 85%, so it’s not like those are horrible grades–my school just has a very strict way of calculating grades.

@Fenton7: Yes, two of the three “C’s” will be brought up to an “A”, no doubt. But the other “C”, Calculus BC, will just be brought up to a “B”. I still think that’s good and I’m not concerned about that.

@franglish: About two years ago, my school stopped that policy of keeping blanks in the gradebook because kids would freak out when they get their report cards back and see “F’s” in some of their classes. My school’s justification for putting in zeros for the missed work is that they want students to constantly see that their grade is in jeopordy and that it needs to be fixed ASAP; plus, they are afraid students may never come in to make up the work, so they just give students zeros until the work is handed in.

When my counselor faxed my grades, she (said she would) faxed a letter explaining what happend. Because my counselor didn’t show any happiness or anything positive to Brown’s phone call (I don’t think she likes me very much–I’m always asking for things) I took it upon myself to call Brown to explain personally. The admissions officer I spoke to seemed to appreciate my call and he said he left a note for my regional officer because he was in charge of a different region. AND the next day (yesterday), I faxed Brown a letter reiterating what happend and I also faxed them copies of absence notes that the colleges I visited gave to me to give to my school letting them know where I was. I pretty much did everything there is to do to plead my case, I just hope it pays off!

Thanks so much to everyone for their support and I wish you all the BEST! Good luck and may this process be over with soon!

I think I was informed towards the end of May about waitlist decisions. It could very well be different this year, but you probably won’t hear for another week or two.

Hi, everyone.

I just got a call from my regional representative.

I got into Brown.

GOOD LUCK ALL. I LOVE YOU. I am off to celebrate/prepare for prom tomorrow. Let me know if anybody else gets lucky too. :)

Congratulations sviola! What did they say on the phone-did they say anything about how many people they’re taking off? I want to email or call Brown and ask why they sent me that other email.

Congratulations as the first of us CCer’s to be accepted!

To my fellow waitlistees: My guidance office still hasn’t received a call from Brown requesting my 3rd quarter transcripts and such–am I the only one? Are they spreading these calls out over a period of days or weeks? Or am I already out of the running?

Congratulations, sviola! I’m so happy for you! No call for me (probably those “C’s” ;))–though my guidance counselor told me that Brown called the school yesterday morning (not sure what that was about, she didn’t tell me). Ah, you must be so excited! Have fun at prom tomorrow while I’ll be slaving away at my senior project and singing & dancing in my musical performance tomorrow–ah, prom is totally the shiz! Have fun!!! :)

Also, are you international because I thought Brown said we would only find out via postal mail? If you are international, I suppose domestic applicants shouldn’t be worried because maybe they only snail mail in the states and call internationally?

Congratulations, sviola! And they are informing people via snail mail? I guess I hadn’t heard that before. I was hoping for a special call today since it’s my birthday…oh well.

^Well, I’m not sure as to whether or not they will be informing people via snail mail. I just could have sworn I saw some where that we will only be notified via snail mail (it could have been in the waitlist letter, but I don’t remember nor do I have it near me at the moment). Good luck to everyone else! I’m soooo tired right now–such a long day! Maybe there will be something in the mail tomorrow?! Congrats again, sviola!

Sorry I didn’t ask any other questions!! I was so, so speechless when I received the call. I was going downstairs to get cookies for my friends upstairs when it happened. My regional representative didn’t mention anything about how many, but she did say that she’ll be mailing me a package on Tuesday. I’m guessing I’m an early bird…

Frankly, I don’t know whether or not Brown called my guidance counselor because I enclosed my grades with my letter of interest and I’m not very close with my counselor (there are 800 students in my class…).

@AmbitiousMind, I live in sunny southern California. That’s why I thought I was at a disadvantage.

Good luck everybody!! :):)

People, you should move on, find another college…You’re just making your lives even more miserable…lol

sviola I’m from southern cal too! I guess that’s it for me. Can I ask - did you have any hooks, special talent, etc? I wish you all the best - you are so lucky!!

Hey, just wondering but does any1 here think that a kid from southern connecticut would have a chance off the waitlist? everyone is talking about geographic diversity and if thats how they are doin it well then i guess thats it 4 me. Any comments or know how they look for kids off the waitlist (ie valedictorians/SALUTATORIANS, math kids, econ majors, sports etc…)?

i sent in a letter of interest in mid-may and sent a copy of it to an admissions officer i met at a college fair. brown is my first choice school and i didn’t want to bother them and mess up any chances i had on getting in, so i just sent the letter…i would be so honored to be able to go

andy–i know someone at brown and she said that valedictorians make up 60% of their class, so i’m guessing they have a lot of salutatorians too.

sviola i’m really happy for you too!

In general, I think the way they take people off of a wait list is based on who among the accepted decided not to go. So if enough people from Southern Connecticut decide not to go then your application might be considered, Andy. Or the decision could be based on other qualities that made them put you on the wait list.

I’ve enjoyed following this thread. My daughter applied to colleges this year and we visited Brown. I can see why everyone wants to go there so much. She was rejected by the way.

Hy. I’ve just recently joined this site, but I have been watching the threads for some time. I am also on the waitlist, but I really wish to get into Brown and unfortunately, all I can do now is wait for the final decision.
Do you think that I have fewer chances since I am an international student, and not from USA (I mean I know it is to be considered in the admission, but I hope it is not decisive).
I wish you all the best of luck and to be admitted at Brown / or your first choice, together with me :D!
