Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2070 (740 CR, 580 M, 750 W)
[] SAT IIs: 740 Literature, 780 French
[] GPA: 3.77
[] Rank: 4/93
[li] Other stats: Only one girl has a 4.0 in my class. Took AP USH last year - 4, and AP Bio - 3. Am taking the most rigorous course-load this year: AP Eng Lit, AP Spanish Lit, AP Comparative Gov, AP French Lang, Honors Calculus, Honors Puerto Rican History.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Excellent. Common app essay got me to a finalist for TASP. Why Columbia? could have been more specific, but I made it personal.
[] ECs: Editor of school’s literary magazine, secretary of Model UN club (have won several prestigious prizes, including a Best Delegation at Harvard Model United Nations 2010), History club, Glee club, Oratory club, semi-professional scuba diver, more than 100 volunteer hours at several centers, National Hispanic Merit Scholar, National Merit Scholar Commended, etc.
[] Teacher Recs: Didn’t read, but I suppose they were incredible.
[] Counselor Rec: She adores me, has told me she’s the daughter she never had. Didn’t read the full letter, but what she did read to me was amazing.
[li] Hook (if any): URM (Puerto Rican)
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Puerto Rico
[] School Type: Catholic all-girls school
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: F

[/ul]Other Factors: I was a TASP finalist last year, the only one from Puerto Rico in more than 5 years. Am also a semi-professional scuba diver, as I mentioned above. My essays were incredibly passionate and genuine; I though that they were the strong point of my application.

General Comments: I was pretty devastated when I read that I had been deferred, but after reading the stats of so many people who were rejected, I felt a bit better. I’m hoping that my Math SAT score was not my downfall. Both my counselor and I tried to make it evident in my application that I was completely veered toward the humanities. But well, life goes on. Hopefully I’ll have better luck in the RD round.
