Decision: Accepted - CC

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2250 (I just took the SAT to qualify as a national merit finalist, so I did not send my score)
[] ACT: 36 superscored, 34 composite
[] SAT II: 790- Literature
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85 (weighted: 4.65)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): NA
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP U.S. History (5), English Language and Comp (5) (I did not take an AP English course, however), AP Calc AB (4)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): NA
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio, Advanced Topics in Latin Literature, Shakespeare, AP Calc BC, AP European History
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholar Semifinalist, AP Commended Scholar, Cum Laude on the National Latin Exam (3 consecutive years)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Senior company member with the Michigan Classic Ballet Company (I dance approximately 30 hours per week, so although I do not have many extracurriculars, this one takes up a lot of my time), Piano, Latin Club (officer), Gold Key (a club at my school which tours prospective students)
[] Job/Work Experience: I teach beginner ballet classes, and my family cleans the ballet studio in order to help pay the tuition.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Education performances for underprivileged students in Detroit, Sunday School teacher
[] Summer Activities: 4 week Summer Intensive program at the Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida (2011), 6 week Summer Intensive program at Houston Ballet in Houston, Texas (2012)
[] Essays: Good; My common app essay was a somewhat creative essay that described my experience dancing at the RDA national festival. Supplement essays: A comparison between Shakespeare’s use of figurative language in Romeo and Juliet and the choreography of the balcony scene from the Romeo and Juliet ballet; a description of my elementary and middle school years as a homeschooled student (I described how my experiences as a homeschooler helped me to shape my interests); a why CU essay which showed that the ballet opportunities of nyc and the academic opportunities of columbia provided a perfect combination for my interests.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I haven’t read them, but I assume that they were very good. One of them was written by my academic adviser and AP Calc teacher, and the other one was written by my English teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably very good also; my counselor spoke with the Columbia admissions representative when she visited my school, so I’m sure that also helped.
[] Additional Rec: None
[] Interview: My interview was held over the phone, and it was with a current Columbia student. I do not think that it went especially well, but I do not think that it drastically affects the admissions decision, especially if it is with a current student.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays (especially my common app essay)
[] Weaknesses: Lack of variety in activities (not sure if this was seen as a weakness or as a sign of focus), not very much community service
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think that I was accepted because I have a unique background and experiences: homeschooled student until freshman year, pre-professional ballet dancer, interest in classics and classic languages, etc.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I did not apply anywhere else, and now I don’t have to!

[/ul]General Comments: Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! I can’t wait to meet you all next year in New York City!
To all of those who were not accepted, do not lose motivation; realize that there are many wonderful schools, and know that you will end up at an amazing college. Good luck!
