Official Columbia University Early Decision 2016 Thread

@neiro6 series -_-…meh

Ah dang it!

@nondairycreamer: I hated related rates, and I still kind of do. But, I know there are a lot of good YouTube video tutorials.

@theamazing: I have no idea where I got these numbers, but somehow I am under the impression that out of the early round ~20% are admitted (well, I do know where I got this number, although the actual percentage is slightly lower), ~20% deferred, and ~60% denied… So, I’m definitely think I’ll be looking at the rejection pile come Thursday, but I gave it my best shot.

Hello Columbia Class of 2016 hopefuls!

I think it’s safe to say that we are all slowly dying under the weight of this decision to be released in three days. Perhaps this decision will affect our perception of our own self-value. Perhaps we dream of seeing the looks of family members, friends, and academic-rivals when we can proudly announce that we got into THE Columbia University. Or perhaps we dream of being surrounded by a buzz of intellectual curiosity in the heart of a booming city. Now, admittedly, I am a bit of all those things. I want to take advantage of the opportunities Columbia has to offer. I believe strongly that Columbia will shape me into a better person. I want the opportunity to discuss Plato on those beautiful steps while attending the latest tap concert directly after. I want to be involved in the intense politics that is NYC. We all do. And the dream is so close, three short days away.

But I think it’s important to keep in mind that an acceptance letter does not define a person. Over the summer, while I browsed through previous Columbia ED threads, I literally got sick. It was a knotting nervousness. Everyone that applies is well-qualified. Everyone that applies has the potential to succeed within those Ivy gates. So just keep in mind that a deferal or even a rejection is an opportunity. An opportunity to apply to other great institutions. I want Columbia just as much as the next guy. But hey, we’re 17 years old. If we’re not “qualified” enough now, well who really expects a 17 year old to have everything figured out? Point is, you are who you make yourself. Whatever happens on Thursday does not define you.

Good luck to all.

thanks, Clockworkorange7, for that advice. We all need to put this in perspective. If you don’t get in, you are no less fabulous. You have a million other opportunities going for you.

I suck at related rates/optimization, mostly because I am horrible @ geometry

@nondairycreamer Geometry was my favorite class. XD But even I hate those stupid “you have x length of fencing…” problems…

Precisely. I know a guy from last year who applied early decision to Brown, got rejected, applied regular decision to Harvard, and is now happy and successful there. Things happen as they may. And as rchhay said, hey, we tried. We did all we could do.

BUT ANYWAYS dudes I cannot stop watching How I Met Your Mother on Netflix, this is becoming a serious problem. (also Marshall from that show went to Columbia Law, jus’sayin)

Also Jesus I hated Calculus. My teacher was awesome, so I pulled like a 97 in AB and a 99 in BC, but I’m so glad that I got it over with last year.

…this is why I’m a polisci major lol

@Clockworkorange7 - but, but…I’m 18 ;c

I’m a econ/polisci major who loves math. XD I hate science though… not cause I’m bad at it, but I just really don’t like it…

I’m applying as an English major! Woot woot! Farthest thing away from science/math, yet I’m taking the hardest math class offered at my school. Why?! I don’t know why!

Last year’s valedictorian at my school applied EA to Yale and got rejected. and guess what? that was the only ivy league school he got rejected from. He is now at Princeton, well enjoying his life. I should definitely keep his case in mind if on thursday i get rejected from columbia.

See, that’s how I feel about math past about algebra II haha. Once you start getting into stuff like oh hay let’s see what this completely theoretical function does in this imaginary situation my mind goes all …-ded-

Science, it kind of depends. Love chem, hatehatehate physics, love half of biology, apathetic about earth/environmental…I was always the English nerd.

Wow, it really goes to show how the Ivy League is such a crapshoot! I don’t think the majority of the Ivy League schools are a proper fit for me, but I guess if I get rejected from Columbia I’ll take a closer look at Dartmouth because it seems like it’d be a good fit and I guess I’ll still have a chance! Definitely encouraging thoughts.

how appropriate that i am procrastinating on my finite sums homework to lurk CC

I actually really liked related rates and optimization. They were fun :slight_smile: and actually made us see the practical uses of math. Not just taking derivatives of annoying functions :)

…back to integrals T___T

@theamazingemz avid How I Met Your Mother fan here. Even more about the NYC connection is that Ted teaches architecture at Columbia! Hope I didn’t spoil that for you if you are still catching up on old episodes.

"@LOLSAURUS If I were a domestic student I would be throwing a party right now. The fact that my application is sitting in the FinAid office means I’ve been accepted."

Not so.

The Admission Committee and the Financial Aid Office do not work together.

@fujoshi

Haha well in that case you damn well better have every minute of the rest of your life planned out. ;)

Just set my PIN password, “letitbe16” haha anybody else decide to set their password as a little reassuring mantra?

@mustangman- Whoop! I’m just starting the second season, but as I read EW and AV Club I’ve heard about it for years, so I know random little plot details like that (Ted teaching there). Still awesome haha.
