[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering in math and science
[] Summer Activities: None
[] Essays: Okay—nothing special
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was decent (from a math teacher that knew me kinda well), the other was okay at best (nothing special to write about)
[] Counselor Rec: Perhaps better than average—we knew each other kinda well.
[] Additional Rec: None
[] Interview (If AAP or Hotel): It was the second to worst interview that I had. It was short (30 minutes) and I feel like I didn’t get to talk a lot about myself. The interview was mostly him talking about Cornell—which was fine—but I feel like he didn’t get to know about me.
[] Supplementary Material (portfolio, etc.): None

[/ul]Other[ul]

[] State (if domestic applicant): Mid-west

[/ul]Reflection[ul]

[] Strengths: Numbers—GPA, test scores. My course rigor was also pretty tough. I also thought one of my recs might have been okayish.
[] Weaknesses: Everything else. Never was captain of anything, never won major awards. There was nothing special about me—other people had better numbers than me. There was no reason to take me over them.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: There was nothing interesting about me. Yeah, I had the numbers and everything—but it just doesn’t matter at this level.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Minnesota, Madison, UIUC, UCLA. Waitlisted: Northwestern, CMU. Rejected: Berkeley, UChicago, Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, Caltech, MIT, Cornell, Stanford.
[li] Do you like the cold?: I wouldn’t mind
[/li]

[/ul]**General Comments: ** I really regret my high school choices. I feel like I would have ended up at the same place (state flagship) with less effort. There was no need to stay up until 3 studying for my classes. I wish I would have started thinking about colleges earlier—thinking about the activities I should have participated in, the awards I should have tried to get, etc. By junior year, it was too late. I had no leadership and no awards. The best thing I could do was to take a hard course load (I took advanced math courses at local university). However, it did nothing to help my application—I was just a robot who studied all day and never showed real passion for anything. I kept looking at my school’s naviance graphs, thinking that I had a shot because my stats were up to par. However, it didn’t graph one thing—depth. 3 other people from my school are going to Cornell, and they were all captains of something. One of them didn’t have as hard of a course load as me, but he was captain of two sports. I wish I would have realized this earlier—that college admissions isn’t about numbers. I feel really stupid for thinking that I had a chance, when all along there was a zero chance of getting in. I hope I don’t sound bitter or anything—this is just my way of coping with all these rejections. I’ll always love Cornell, and congrats to those who got in!

@lin3ar - I know the rejection hurts, but you got into some very good schools and will have a great college experience at any of them. You also strike me as very smart for recognizing that the reason for the rejection was just the incredible number of highly qualified students vying for a relatively few spots at these top schools. And don’t feel stupid; you did have as much chance as anyone. With this kind of competition it is also kind of a crapshoot who gets in. Please don’t think you wasted your time either; 1) you did get into some very good schools; and 2) you will be well-prepared for the rigor that comes with a college engineering program. Best of luck to you in the future!

General Comments:
Cornell was my top choice for the last two years. I don’t regret using my ED here as I feel like it took everything I could possibly do to show my interest and get the transfer option. AEM’s selectivity has been significantly greater each year and to be able to have the option to go there for 3 years is awesome. In the meantime, I will attend the Boston College Carroll School of Management and take it from there. I’ll most likely wait until it’s time to apply to see if I would accept the transfer offer but it’s great to see that the option is there. Good luck to everyone!

My ILR essay definitely showed them I deserved to be there regardless of the statistical stuff and that I did well academically in regards to the resources that were offered to me.
