This is my first time taking the SAT and I took the PSAT three and a half years ago.
I am a biomedical engineering transfer student sending my scores to MIT, Columbia, Harvard, and Stanford. I also applied to USC, UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC Irvine. I was not expecting to score so low… I hope they don’t take SAT scores too heavily for transfer students. Maybe my SAT II scores in January on Math II, Chemistry, and Biology will make up for it…

Hey guys–does anyone have any resources for all the author’s tone/style vocabulary in critical reading? Like, “sardonic, pathetic, pessimistic” etc… I’ve been having a lot of trouble with those so is there any way to get a list of these types of vocab terms that the SAT likes to test?

Also, how did you all study the idiomatic expression and prepositional phrases for the writing section?

I have a lucky guess (Feeling) usually, but I hear other people say to underline the adjectives in the passage as u read along. They usually reveal what the tone.

You don’t really study for idioms. If you’ve read a lot, you naturally know many of them. Once you do practice tests, you’ll get to know the rest. Just make sure you know what you did wrong on every practice.

Can someone help give me tips for CR? I don’t have a problem with the Vocab. I have a problem understanding the passages. Especially the double ones.

Should I take it again?
I unfortunately went down in 2 sections the second time I took it and I really think I could hit 800 in Math and Writing if I study really diligently the next 2 months to take the March test. I’m aiming for a couple Ivy League schools and I don’t want my scores to drag me down. Thoughts?
Curious as to why you retook the test so quickly after your first one (and in fact you couldn’t have had time to apply for December after Nov scores came out).
Anyway, if you’re mentally able to study the SAT along with everything else, then go for it. Just remember the SAT isn’t the only thing on your college application, so could this time be better spent elsewhere?
@Woandering I took it quickly after because I hoped to be done with the SAT I by January so I could focus on extracurriculars that take up a lot of my time, but I was really hoping for a 2300+.
But I understand what you mean about time being better-spent elsewhere, but since SAT II’s are not offered in March I figure I might as well give the SAT I one last try since that would still give me 2 months to study to take SAT II’s in May. Maybe there are other things I should focus on for applications, but I can’t really think of any that would matter more than the SAT. If you know of anything that time would be better spent working on definitely share!
@engineerof2016 Unfortunately for you, you were the victim to two harsh curves. I heard that the November curve was awful, and the December curve in Math was pretty rough too. I think that even though Ivies ask for all your scores, they only look at the best one, right? I’m not sure. Would March be your third time taking it? If so, go for it. If not, then I would try the ACT if you haven’t already.
@TheDidactic Yeah, March would be my third time taking it. Most of the Ivies use superscore, so I think I’m just going to bust my butt studying for the next couple months in hopes of hitting 800’s in Math and Writing which would give me a 2400 super score if all works out. Thanks for the advice!
I know it’s a long shot but does anyone happen to remember what the last math open-ended question was? I got that one wrong and it’s really been bothering me DDD:
