[] Job/Work Experience: Baby sitting
[] Volunteer/Community service: Part of my school’s curriculum, every Wednesday for 2 hours, knitting baby hats for hospitals, organizing a blanket making event for the homeless
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): Mine was about my experience with my African-American affinity group, and how being able to withdraw and discuss the struggles and laughs that come with being a female of color in a majority white private school and in the general society helped me grow. I tried really hard to not sound like an angry Black woman, but it definitely wasn’t the most captivating part of my writing.
[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): I think that it is one of my best pieces of writing ever. It’s an edited version of a memoir I wrote, which I subsequently used for my senior speech and college essay. I wrote about my hair, and how growing up around people whose hair behaved itself a lot more than mine did produced some self-love issues that I had to overcome. Of course I ended with how I overcame and an india.arie reference…
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it): I wrote about how much Duke has done for my family (the school helped my parents escape from a civil war) and how it reminded me, in all the best ways, of my high school. Pretty good, but couldn’t top my general essay.
[] Teacher Recommendations (only if you saw it): I didn’t see them, but I have a really good relationship with both teachers and they’re both brilliant, so I’m assuming that they were great.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): I have no idea
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): It was the one needed for an art supplement, and it was very well done.
[] Interview: It was very fun. If we had met in college, I think the two of us would’ve been friends…and I just had to sing for her…secret weapon wink [/ul]

** Other **

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): MN
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Black
[] Gender: Female
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Legacy from mom, research [/ul]

** Reflections **

[ul]
[]Strengths: Decent test scores, solid grades, sick essay, tons of extracurriculars, and leadership positions, legacy.
[] Weaknesses: Grades and test scores could be better
[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I can’t really tell you, because I’m still honestly surprised that I got in…all I did was scream and cry when I saw, “Congratulations.” Kids at school were telling me that they remembered when I told them in first grade that I was going to Duke. So this is a lifelong dream coming true for me and I am beyond excited to see all of you next year…we’re gonna TEAR IT UP!!! [/ul]
