hence in university “distinction mark or an A” is anything above 75 - now this sounds easy - but try saying that when u get to uni.

How much do you think the school will care that I got a 2400 on my last SAT? I know scores aren’t everything, but exactly how much weight does that carry?

i dont know, i got a 2080 so im wondering the same thing (but in the opposite way)
i hate testing… i always get so nervous…

A 2400 never hurts, and and a 2080 is a very decent SAT score. Depends on your grades and the rest of your app.

Could anyone describe an accepted candidate with a score below 25% and a candidate above 25% of Columbia’s sat scores? Ie what you think these accepted people will have in terms of character and achievements. Say Billy was accepted with a 1990 sat (below 25% of selected) and Sarah was accepted with a 2370 (above 75% of selected) - what attributes do they have that makes them both admitted?

from what ive seen from previous threads about people who were accepted/rejected ED it seems fairly random
they want a “balance” so i guess it depends on who you’re competing against for that year

Rajincajunfire is exactly right – nobody can say for sure what is going to get the kids admitted who are in the 1-25% and the 75-100% for sats. Honestly, nobody can even say why a 25-75% kid is admitted, because we know that there’s certainly a plethora of those who are denied.

Gun to my head, I’m saying the 1-25% have a good chance of being hook candidates; recruited athletes, exceptional talents beyond academics that cannot be passed up, legacies, faculty connections, URMs, vip students (your everyday celebrities), etc. Some of them may just get in because there grades are so stellar and their essay so impeccable that it makes up for a “below-average” score, but I’ll bet the majority are hook candidates.

As for the 75-100% bracket, they perhaps don’t need an “in” in quite the same way that a 1-25% might, because their scores are very strong. Needless to say though, they’re too going to need the grades, recs., and essay to back up their score.

Either way, don’t worry about your scores; ultimately they most likely will not be the deciding factor in whether you’re in or out at an Ivy League like Columbia, where with a flick of their proverbial wrist they could admitted 1,800 kids with 2400 sats. So set yourself apart (hopefully you’ve already done so), don’t worry about your scores, and hope for the best.

Hey guys, Happy Thanksgiving! I’ll introduce myself: I’m Chinese-American (Chinese parents, born here) from right outside of Boston, and I go to this tiny little boarding school about 40 minutes away. I had pretty mediocre grades sophomore year but my junior grades and my first trimester senior grades are pretty strong, so I guess you can say I’m a late bloomer. My freshman grades don’t really count so much because I was plopped into the British system at an international school in Shanghai for the second half of freshman year. Columbia’s definitely a reach for me, but I’ve wanted to come here since eighth grade- I’m absolutely in LOVE with this school! Since it’s Thanksgiving break, there’s too much time to sit around and worry about 12/15 when I’m supposed to be doing more apps! I’m already into the University of Edinburgh- did anyone else apply/get accepted to UK schools?

I don’t post much on these forums but since I applied ED to Columbia with all you great people, it seemed like now was the time to try it out

I’m from PA, I’m a girl. When I think of Columbia, I get a happy warm feeling inside (which is hard to do considering I am sick right now!) and I can’t even imagine the feeling of getting rejected or deferred. Actually, I can’t really imagine the feeling of getting accepted either! What does it feel like? Warmth? Happiness? Excitement? Relief? I don’t know.

I, too, though have to occupy my time with a bunch of activities to take my mind off the looming decision date. It’ll be something.

I just wanted to wish all of you the best of luck; I think Columbia is a great place and I’m really glad that we all have applied ED to the best school in the world!
