Which school did you apply to?: College
What did you choose as your major: Government
Date Submitted App: early January; like the 4th or 5th maybe?
State (if domestic applicant): Arizona
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: large competitive public
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: upper-middle, probably a little lower than that
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): NONE; antithesis of a hook.

Reflection
Strengths: my essays were by far the best part of my app, but my GPA and course schedule too
Weaknesses: my test scores aren’t phenomenal, and I didn’t even send SAT IIs
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my essays made my application, but I think I’m a pretty well-rounded student, as well.
What would you have done differently?: Nothing!

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I seriously am so happy. I’ve gotten rejected by two schools and wait-listed by another, so this came as a complete surprise. To those who got in, congrats! To those who didn’t, seriously don’t feel bad. It’s a lot of luck when so many students all have the same qualifications. Good luck and I hopefully will see some of you next year!

I know that it’s going to work out for you. I truly did not think I stood ANY chance of getting in after getting Deferred Early Action, but, hey, anything could happen and it did. Goodluck with the rest of your schools I know that you’re going to have an incredible four years to come no matter where you go.

Hi!
I just got accepted to Georgetown and applied to the Walsh School of Foreign Service
I was wondering if it says in the decision letter which school you got into 'cause mine didnt say the Walsh school in particular?

Decision: Rejected

SAT 2240
ACT 33
GPA 4.0 Unweighted, 4.5 Weighted
Top 4% of Class
Many leadership positions/extracurriculars (4 year Varsity Athlete, Club Soccer Captain, founded a local nonprofit, President of 2 clubs, etc etc…)

White, from a public high school in California, applied to Georgetown College in the biological sciences.

Surprisingly, I’m not upset about the rejection - I was deferred EA and was not very proud of my application. I sent the required one letter of recommendation and no more (To future applicants: SEND MORE THAN ONE!) and also went way over the expected length in my short essay on an extracurricular (mine was about 550 words!) Not all of my extracurriculars fit in the given boxes, but (silly me) I didn’t utilize the additional information section.

Looking back, I would have changed all of those things, but fortunately I realized them before I submitted my other applications. I’m hopeful for upcoming decisions because I know I was much more eloquent on the UC and Common Application, and had time to revise all of my essays again.

So far accepted to Berkeley, UCLA, Wesleyan, and Holy Cross. Waiting on JHU, Brown, Duke and a few other Ivies…

Congrats to all admits, and to those in my boat, keep the hopes up! :)

[ *] Essay 1 (Personal/Community essay): About my experience visiting the Korean DMZ, talked about my background and my goals. I’m really proud of this one and give it a 10. It was also my common app essay
[ *] Essay 2 (Different for each school): About the relations between North and South Korea, since the Yeonpyeong Island incident happened right around that time. This one made me feel great bc the solution I proposed came true! I’ll feed my ego again…10…I did a lot of analysis.
[ *] Other:[/list][ *] Teacher Recommendation #1: didn’t read, but was “great” according to GC
[ *] Teacher Recommendation #2: same as above. note: i love both teachers and they think very well of me, but i don’t think i established the spectacular connection i would have liked. i probably didn’t get any of the “best student i had in 9023897917 years” remarks or anything very insightful or personal.
[ *] Counselor Rec: probably real nice. she loves me and i love her
[ *] Additional Rec: got one from the Ambassador!
[ ] Interview: Short and…not sweet, but very crisp. my interviewer was a mcdonough alum who ran a successful real estate business downtown, very wide-stride hard-brow quintessential mid-atlantic american businessman. Tried my best to come across as sharp but polite and cultured…he wrote down stuff i said and i think it was quite solid. not as conversational, pretty professional. he did tell me at the end that i was an outstanding candidate and even helped me with my coat! hahaha i walked out in high spirits ^^

[ ] Strengths: definitely that internship and my essays. i think i had pretty solid scores and grades too. probably also helped that i’m solidly devoted to a certain cause that i made very clear.
[ ] Weaknesses: maybe the un-wow teacher recs, lacklustre community service…ehhh there are probably more than a few holes here and there…;;
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: i don’t think they come across kids with trilingual embassy internships too often. i’m also very strong in writing. academic record was pretty snug in georgetown’s range.

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:

I’m feeling good! Parents are cautioning me about making the commitment to foreign services so early. I’m considering majoring in econ for undergrad and coming back to Walsh for an MSFS. I was accepted so far at UNC Chapel Hill (Honors Carolina) and Wellesley. I like them well enough, but I like SFS a lot better…but my final decision will have to wait until I hear back from everywhere else. Good luck to everyone and congrats to everyone who got in!! If you didn’t get in, best of luck to you and I bet you’ll go somewhere awesome.

I’m really excited about SFS but I think I’m almost equally excited about GEORGETOWN CUPCAKES…MUAHAHHA when i go to check it out im definitely dropping by. nomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnomnom

[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:**SO SHOCKED AND SO EXCITED! AHHHH CONGRATS EVERYONE

I guess I’m kinda late, but…

Accepted!

SAT: 2250 (superscore)
SATII: Math II 790, WH&Physics 710, Lit 670? I think? I don’t quite remember…

GPA: I’m not sure… : p two B+s in all 4 years

Came to the States in 2007, was an ESOL student in 9th and 10th grade. Took AP Euro (4), Stat (5) in 11th, Calc BC (5), Gov (4), Psych (5), Phys C (4), Lit (3) in 12th. (I graduated from high school last year and took a gap year, reapplied to colleges this year. Gov I think I could have done better if I studied, but I was struck by senioritis. HARD.)

ECs: nothing big, but well-rounded and committed i guess. several internships/jobs at local businesses, president at a club, public relations at another club, member in many many clubs including national & math honor society, community services mainly in teaching/tutoring.

I went to a public high school in VA, but am technically an international from S. Korea. Low income (around 30000?), applied for aid… haven’t heard back from financial office :S

Applied to business school, undecided. I think the internships I did during my year off helped a lot. Interview was okay, lasted only about 30 minutes, very casual. Haven’t read my recs but they should have been good… I maintained good relationships with all my teachers and my counselor even after I graduated. : ) Sent an additional rec from the owner of two businesses I currently work/volunteer at.

Sorry, didn’t feel like following the template : p I was and still am reeeeaaaallyyyyy happy that I got in, but I desperately need fin aid to attend so I’ll have to see. Waiting to hear back from my first choice todayy… AHHH!
Congrats to everyone that got in, good luck to everyone that was waitlisted, and for people who were rejected: you will do great wherever you go, and even if you don’t have any place to go (like I did last year…) don’t lose hope! You always have a chance of reapplying, transferring, or even applying to grad school. So, good luck, don’t be too discouraged by one (or more than 10, like me last year…) college rejection and go on with your life!

Decision: Waitlisted

A random note to all reading this: I applied EA as a junior due to the fact that I live in Mississippi, and I have exhausted nearly all of my curriculum. I was deferred EA, and just assumed I wasn’t going to get in. Now, I’ve been wait-listed, and haven’t taken senior English or any of my SAT IIs. Personally, I find it odd that I’m even being still considered. But hey, that’s fine with me.

Other Factors: I have a lot of work experience and my grades have gone through the roof this last quarter. I didn’t send them a transcript from 2nd and 3rd quarter, so that might have hurt my app a bit.
[ b]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:

I am going to send in all of my job information from this semester, my grades, and two more recommendations. Hopefully, that will make my application even better. However, considering that I am not even going to graduate in May, they should probably give the spot to one of you extremely qualified people. The best of luck to you all. :)
