Official Harvard 2011 Transfer Thread

^haha I cant login either…i really am not upset at all… i never expected anything…just curious to know if the people who got interviews can not log in as well…

yeah…i totally expected it. but,

HEY ALL WHO GOT INTERVIEWS. TRY TO LOG IN!

(it’s worth a shot)

:)

^No reason to freak out. I think that’s on purpose.

I can’t log in either…lol…can ANYONE log in? What does this mean? haha

AHHH I can’t login either! I know it probably means absolutely nothing but my stomach is in SUCH a knot! If anyone who got interviews can sign on I am guessing that it means something…until then, I am going to live in fearrrrr

I believe in an earlier e-mail that our logins had an expiration date. It appears as if its expirations coincides with the beginning of application review.

^ I dont get how it works… the application review starts now? but then how did they decide who gets the interviews… they had to have gone through the apps already to see who they want as a potential candidate… so the process cant really be starting now… maybe there seeing out of the interviews and stuff who they are accepting and waitlisting? im confused how the whole system works…

^That’s an excellent point. Maybe there was an initial review? But that wouldn’t make sense either. Seems like a waste of time.

^I got tired of all of the speculation so I decided to call. Here’s what I was told by the very helpful and nice TRANSFER ADMISSIONS COUNSELOR:

She is not privy to why someone received an interview. But according to her, they will only do it if they need to clarify something on the application.

The admissions committee are still reviewing our applications and have yet to make decisions. She noted that they may be released sometime next week or possibly earlier or maybe a little later than next week. Though she did sound convinced that they will be released sometime next week.

Hope that helps y’all sleep at night.

but then how would they pick out the kids for an interview… and they are forsure not random… those are the kids who they want as we have seen on previous years threads…

^I can’t speak to the previous year’s thread. I thought some that got in had an interview and some that did not receive an interview still got in. Basically as I understand the process, there was an initial review of applications in order to conduct an interview. It could have been department chairs or someone other than adcoms that were interested in finding out more about the candidate. Once the interview was conducted, all of the applications began their review.

Either way, there’s no point in attempting to figure out the process, they will be releasing decisions soon.

Just got a letter from Serial publishers. My paper is accepted for publication in International Journal of Mathematics and Applications. Will update my application.
PS: Applying for a major in Computer Science.

Hi everyone,

I have been following the thread for a while, and since everyone is telling everyone else why they think someone got an interview, here is my rationale (also, do not take this personally):

I think that some applicants have extraordinary extracurricular activities, and in order to see how truthful these students are being, the adcom conducts interviews. I mean, Harvard is the school that the really insane kid lied his way into and out of. Not accusing anyone of lying though, since some people probably really do have amazing ECs.

Gosh, the ratio of speculation to fact is too off-balance for my taste. Thanks, eyethink, for providing us official answers. Even though phone officials have been wrong on some occasions, that did indeed help me sleep.

If we can just go back to last year’s thread, we can see that many of their assertions and speculations have been incorrect. For instance, one poster relayed a message from the representative they called who said that approximately 300 people applied. We now know that the actual number is double that figure (614 exactly). How much of what we’re saying can we actually believe?

I fished through the thread real quickly, and I happened across two applicants who got interviews (I didn’t check the whole thread, so there could easily be more). One was waitlisted, and it does not appear that the other was admitted (i.e. waitlisted or denied).

I can’t edit my post, so here’s some food for thought before I hit the sack.

That’s a great observation about the timeline, transfer9858. I didn’t think fully about it before, as my research advisor was contacted back in February about a few minor confusions my reader had about my application.

To understand it, I sought out this explanation of their process by Dean Fitzsimmons himself:

[quote]
Once all applications have been read and the subcommittee process begins, the area representative acts as an advocate, and summarizes to the subcommittee the strengths of each candidate. Subcommittee members discuss the application, and then vote to recommend an action to the full Committee. Majorities rule, but the degree of support expressed for applicants is always noted to allow for comparisons with other subcommittees./quote

In other words, interviews must have been planned after their application was read, but before the final vote from the Committee, which should be the stage we are currently in.

(I presume we are in the final stage because the Committee met in the beginning of May last year as well, and their decisions were out only two weeks later on May 14th.)

Nighty night.

^Thanks BCP. That somewhat corroborates what the person on the phone told me.

From the 2010 thread:

-griffinmyers received an interview, but was waitlisted.

-cgeorge received an interview, and did not post his decision, but from reading his other posts I have gathered that he was not accepted.

-There were also some people whose only post on CC was in the thread saying they got interviews. My intuition: either these were ■■■■■■ OR if these people got accepted, they’d come back and post.

There’s likely much more data to be compiled from the 2010 thread, but this was the work of just 5-10 minutes.

^ The intersting thing is that in regular admissions, some people get two interviews. That means that the committee was split on that applicant’s decision so they wanted to clarify some stuff in the student’s app. Most of those applicants end up being waitlisted.

I noticed that one of the newbie posters who got an interview claimed to be from Chile. At least one of the 12 admitted students was from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.

It’s possible (not saying it’s probable) that more of them were admitted than they let on.

At any rate, I think we should trust WindCloudUltra’s authority.

I just called the admissions office and got a slightly different and more detailed explanation on a few fronts:

Admissions decisions. They said that there is no precise date for decisions. Rather, June 1 is the deadline for results. They will send out decisions as soon as they are finished, which may be as early as last year (May 15), as late as June 1, or anytime in between.

Interviews: Can be for pretty much any reason. They are not a good sign, nor a bad sign. They are to make sure that the committee is making the right decision, whatever that decision may be.
