Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@baltimoreguy - It all serves to show that CC posters are not a representative sample of applicants to Harvard (or any other college).

^^ Word. @jalebigirl‌ Oh sorry, I totally misread the post, I thought OP had somehow counted all the posters on the Harvard forum and came up with 977. My bad.

@Ixnaybob - you’re right. I was only trying to give good advice to the applicants. Having an 18 year old myself, and having just gone through this stressful time, I totally understand. What I do not tolerate however, are those who try to justify their non-admittance by going down the path that somehow a less qualified candidate [codeword URM] took their spot. Also, “joking” about such issues is just a passive / aggressive way of actually saying what you actually mean.

I work with kids all day on their college apps and truly feel for those that got deferred or rejected. I also posted that, as a parent, I know for a fact that wherever they end up next year they will love. I know kids who got rejected at Brown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton who are now either at one of the other Ivies or at a school they now adore. I see their FB pics from football games, Halloween, etc and remember how distraught they were just this time last year. However, it seems to have been wiped from their minds as a temporary blip in their lives. You can read my past posts to see that I am very committed to working with kids and helping them navigate this process - not just on this electronic forum.

So, I will leave the Harvard thread and go back to the Yale one and anxiously wait with them for their decision on Tuesday. Some of them are actually be kids I interviewed (yes, I am an alumni and parent) and I will wonder why they did not get accepted because they were fabulous during the interview. The ones that get in, if any, I will call and congratulate and welcome to the fold.

Hi guys, I’ve been getting a few messages on here from other applicants and so want to say if anyone else has any questions please ask as I am more than happy to help if I can in any way possible. (I’m from England and have been lucky enough to get a place!)

Can’t wait to meet you all at Visitas!

@Tperry1982 - don’t let the naysayers get you down. There aren’t many Harvard students or alumni participating in this forum, and the valuable perspectives you and @T26E4 bring to this forum are greatly appreciated by the vast majority of readers.

@HobbitTon‌ , do you know if Visitas is all expenses paid? I’m assuming not since the website never mentions it, but I heard from multiple people that it is…?

@crapdiem‌: On the Admitted Students Portal Visitas page, it says that we get to stay in student dorms and enjoy the unlimited meal plan, so I think that food and lodging for students is free (although if you bring a parent, they obviously have to pay for themselves lol). I think that generally you do have to pay for travel expenses, but I know that if they pose a significant financial obstacle for you that you can talk to Harvard and they do sometimes pay for travel as well! You could always contact your Regional Admissions Officer if you’d like to see if they’ll pay for travel!

Most colleges give you travel aid based on whether you have qualified for full financial aid.

deferred as well, but congrats to all those who got in!

@crapdiem - I believe Harvard will pay travel expenses to Visitas for those who could not otherwise afford to attend. I’m not sure of the criteria but if you contact Admissions, they will be able to tell you. There’s some information here: http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~faoinit/AVPFAQ.pdf

I was deferred, which I was totally expecting, but I know I just need to start working harder on my essays for other colleges and hope for better results in March.

If I want to edit my common app essay, will Harvard see that I changed it on my common app, or would I have to update it via the portal still?

Thanks guys!

@Karabekian I tend not to go to emotional extremes, so there was no crying involved, but I did do the happy dance. I was really more shocked (still am) than anything else. I’ll post full stats at some point.

Your essay must have been exceptionally good. When you first said weeks ago that your essay was over 1100 words, I was a bit worried. I was sure the AO’s eyes would glaze over. I’m glad it worked out.

@Tperry1982

Hypocritically, this is a passive-aggressive way of confronting me.

I wasn’t justifying my deferral. It was actually a joke. And, if you read my posts, I explicitly stated that I was mad at myself and no one else.

Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with voicing the opinion that affirmative action is unjust. Rather, this is a forum, which is by definition a place where “views on a particular issue can be exchanged.” I personally believe and always have believed that affirmative action is a stain on American post-secondary education. I believed that before I was deferred, and would have still believed that had I been accepted. I’d be more than happy to debate you through PMs if that’s what you’d like.

It’s saddening to me that with the Yale education that you flaunt, your only justification for your arguments is that you went to Yale.

Now, let me enjoy my deferral.

Affirmative action MODERATOR’S NOTE Balance redacted per post 3818.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: The only place on College Confidential where Affirmative Action may be discussed is here. Any posts in this thread will be deleted.

On a side note as well, if anyone that just got accepted would like to go over my common app essay, I would greatly appreciate it. My english teacher and I spent a lot of time on it, but I’m slowly starting to hate the topic. Any help would be awesome. Thanks so much everyone.

Hello, everyone. Long time no see you. I’m dropping by to congratulate those of you who were admitted, and to tell you who weren’t that there’s still a chance, not to mention the vast number of great colleges to which you can still apply and get in. I’m sure we can all be successful anywhere we get in. We proved it to ourselves. To me, applying to Harvard was a tremendous challenge, but I guess that it was an amazing experience, regardless of the AO’s decisions. Well, honestly, I haven’t checked my decision yet. I got the e-mail, and it’s probably in the portal too, but I’m trying to gather enough courage to open it. Although I’ve already promised myself that I’ll not suffer because of it more than the inevitable, in case I am deferred or rejected, I have two tests next week (before the summer break here in Brazil), and can’t run the risk of bombing them, considering that our emotions can be inconveniently unpredictable. But as soon as I get on vacation, I’ll check it out once and for all. I wanna start the new year with new hopes, new goals and with my spirit refreshed. One day, I know I’ll look back and notice how wise I was to have made the decision of applying to Harvard. At least, none of us will ever regret not having given it a shot. Please don’t get me as a pessimistic person. Actually, I am normally very optimistic about my decisions and plans (sometimes more than I should), but I’m trying to be realistic about the numbers and about my odds, so I can face a negative result in a natural way. Ok, that’s what I had to say, but I have a question to the people who were admitted. I’d like to know if any of you have already received the letter by mail. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I read that they also mail admission letters to the applicants who get accepted. If that is the case, have you received anything yet? If not, do you know when the Office will be mailing them? Thanks!

^did you get in? Confused

No, I haven’t even checked out my letter yet. I’ll do it after next week, after my two final exams. I wanna know about the letters that are mailed so I won’t be neither surprised nor disappointed if I don’t get mine before I take my final exams.
