Official June 2012 Sat CR sections (US)

Hey do you guys think 64/67 will be an 800 or is that just wistful thinking?

Okay, CR ninja here to clear some things up (I got 1 wrong on the May passages, although I ended up with a 730 because of vocab).

It is DEFINITELY dramatic and not ironic. 100% sure.

Again, it is DEFINITELY snide. I’ll break this one down for you because i remember it better:

I believe it was along the lines of “Something something has enlisted in the “we are going to save the world” army…”

Right off the bat, “army” is a facetious term, because, as you know, these guys aren’t ACTUALLY part of an army… they’re just a group of people. The fact that he calls them an “army” is somewhat condescending. When combined with the “we are going to save the world” overexaggeration, it becomes clear that he’s mocking them.

Let’s look at the definition of snide, shall we?
“Derogatory or mocking in an indirect way”

And, just for the hell of it, “pedantic”?
“Ostentatious in one’s learning”

I rest my case.

@banned hero

probably not, but are those wrong or omitted? if they’re wrong your raw score becomes 63, which is definitely not an 800. sorry dude!

Yeah 63/67. Hmm I wonder what that will be 770? or 780? :(

on average that’s a 770, but the curve might bend it up 10 points!

@onlyshallow “CR ninja”, I got a 790 in May, so what does that make me? The question asked about the characterization of the army, something along the lines of, “How does the author characterize the army in lines -.” Now while the author’s tone, is in fact snide, the question asked how he characterizes them. And the rest of that 1st paragraph talked about how they focus on unreachable goals, and irrelevant details - not about how they are condescending or derogatory. You misread the question.

I put pedantic for the question about the “army” I just felt a particular pull to it for some reason

@nelky, thanks for updating and reposting the list! I thought it would get buried by now, haha.

@seriously yeah I didn’t put analogous either.
ALSO, guys, what were the other options for that question? the one with analogous thinking and repetition

I went with repetition: “The students lose…The university loses…higher education loses…”

@readi
ignoring your unnecessary competitive edge (all I was saying was that I’m not an authority on vocab, but I nearly aced the passage sections, which is what we’re talking about)

if you’re right about the question (which you might be), then you’re correct, but i seem to think that wasn’t the question.

and pedantic doesn’t really fit his description of the army, either. it’s better than snide but it makes me think the question was in fact his feelings about the army.

EDIT: just did some reading back in this thread… i’m now almost certain it was “the author’s description of the army could best be characterized as…” which is intentionally unclear, but its asking for his tone, not what he says

Hi! if anyone can remember ANY other answer choices to the question:

Latitude lines are spaced about 70 miles apart, so they are ______ for general regions, but not to ______ locations. answer—>(adequate/pinpoint)
(something along those lines)

It would be extremely helpful!! Even just a few words… thanks!!!

^
i got that too

If any of you guys took October, this is starting to sound like the “Vehement vs Caustic” question.

There are always disputed questions on CR…

Also, it was snide. It was not pedantic because around the sentence following the description of the army, it described the epitome of what someone “pedantic” would do, but was referring to something that was NOT THE ARMY. Snide is of course not the best word that the college board could have picked but it is definitely the best answer for that question

For the telescope passage, what was the answer for the question about why the author was talking about the air??

I think it may be wrong, but I put something about like finding the best location to view the planets…If you kept reading beyond the lines specified it showed evidence for that answer. thoughts?

I said because it showed that some planets can be viewed well in a perfect location. are123 sounds right

Also, what was the answer with the telescope passage about the cockroach going on the telescope? I said it had something like “presents a fact then gives an humorous anecdote.”

@Person0 Yes!! I got that too for the cockroach and am pretty sure that it is correct.

And yay i’m glad you got that location answer too! I felt pretty confident about it but was reading different answers on the thread.
