Official Post-caucus Discussion

Dadguy, I agree that the right has been only too eager to annoint Hillary as the presumptive democratic nominee. Even Bush and Rove have either directly or indirectly stated this. Raising the specter of a Hillary presidency works wonders for GOP candidates who want to a) raise money b) improve voter turnout abd c) have voters overlook their own drawbacks.

Giuliani has been most explicit in this respect. He essentially tells the Republicans : “Look, I know you don’t like my liberal social positions but you just have to suck it up because your alternative is Hillary Clinton”. It is in Rudy’s interest to have Hillary remain a viable candidate.

Many reasons…some stupid some not…
1st. Not enough experience…I agree, he has had only 2 yrs in the political realm on a national level. Yes, I know Huckabee has no national, however he ran a govt. as governor, and I still would not vote for him

They have bought into the negative ads, especially the one where Obama did not put his hand on his heart for the Anthem. They still won’t buy German or Japanese cars, very patriotic.

What I find interesting is the person with the most experience is not getting support on the dem side (richardson)

When I asked why they would support Edwards who has just as little experience, it’s b/c they like him no real foundation just “I like him”, so don’t take any wt with them, it was only my pt., that there are some of us on both sides of the fence who may not vote at all due to the candidates

Thanks for the link to the quiz. Looks like Obama would be the best fit for me, which I suspected.

At least you can now say, your stance mirrors his and is not about media bias…I will admit my number 3 was Guiliani, and although I think he did great things as Fed Pros. & mayor I would vote for my #4 first (Richardson)…My results had Huckabee and Romney at the bottom of the republicans, which I suspected all along.

My s’s girlfriend and my d both came out with Hillary and they freaked…they both are Obama supporters.

So if I tallied my immediate family (including the grandparents and girlfriend, this is how our results would be and who they actually are supporting

GP Edwards -2 but they actually support Hillary
DH McCain was always a McCain supporter
Me Thompson was always a Thompson supporter will go over to McCain
S McCain was orig Mitt supporter had converted to McCain b4 test
D Hillary actually supports Obama
GF Hillary actually supports Obama

So the dems in our family actually didn’t align with who they support and the republicans did

Interesting quiz…Hillary, Ron Paul and McCain are in the middle of my range. Apparently I really don’t get along with Tom Tancredo…whoever that is. Edit: OK, just looked him up on Wiki. Sounds about right…best part was when he stated (repeatedly) that US should threaten to blow up Muslim holy sites (Mecca etc) in retaliation for a terrorist attack. Wow. Wow. What a loony.

What a beautiful morning. I haven’t felt hope in such a long time.

Didn’t he just drop out? So did you fit with your 1st choice though?

bullet - interesting about your parents. It always amuses me that people still think that buying Fords and Chevrolets is being patriotic. My parents are the same way. They are in denial about Ford’s newest, brightest plant in China and how they doubled the number of Chinese parts bought in 2006. I have given up on that front.

My first ‘match’ also dropped out today (Biden). I had no idea what his positions were either. Obama is apparently my next fit…I better look into him too. At this point I just know he is a great speaker but what his actual positions are on issues of interest to me, I haven’t looked.

I can’t imagine a worse successor to Bush than Huckabee.

Well, doesn’t he have the right qualifications for President? Doesn’t the governorship of a small state and mastering the small village preacher’s tools impress the voters?

Hillary will be back; it’s just time to reinventing herself and drop the latest snakeskin.

In both cases, it worked wonders a few years ago.

according to yesterday’s WSJ, only ONE non-incumbent has won Iowa and then the White House - a peanut farmer from GA. Obama and Huckabee better hope that history changes…

Of course those “qualifications” impress the evangelicals, who will flock after Huckabee…that was predictable.

I don’t think his folksy Baptist preacher roots are the right fit to run this country right at the moment though, not by a long shot.

Their actually Bullet’s parents (I’m Pima), funny story about them, mom in law was car shopping a couple of yrs ago and she was interested in a BMW model, dh remarks that she must have gotten over the foeign cars and was willing to buy german (in her defense she is jewish and was alive during WWII), anyway she said absolutely not! H and I look at each other and then h with a quizzical look asked if she knew what BMW stood for…she didn’t and the car was now out of contention…landed up with a caddy.

But back to the point, I wonder if this is the year that the largest voting segment (in law age) and the newest voting segment (kids) will actually counteract ea others vote and thus a 3rd candidate will arise. Obviously I don’t think we will know until Feb who will actually be the candidate.

As much as I dislike Howard Dean, he gets points from me b/c b4 the scream, he actually had the younger pop involved, and it looks like Barack can do the same, but through conversations with people in my parents age they will not support Barack, and they all give the same example…all of the dems lined up and Barack not showing respect for the anthem…can everyone see that commercial now…I can. Hillary already is running ads that he has missed many important votes (only sen missing for the last one)

I also think that the media has given him a pass and not hit him like Hillary, now that he is a front runner the guns are loaded for his back, just like Huckabee. The media will be searching for every juicy tidbit. Like vicarious said they didn’t know his issues and now looking into him.

Even though I am a repub, I will gladly cross lines if the platform fits me, i.e. Biden v Huckabee, Biden would be my choice, Richardson v. Romney, Richardson hands down. McCain v. anyone… MCCAIN. Obama v Huckabee or Romney, I am sitting it out, I can’t support either one, and yes, I know if I don’t fight then I have no right to b**ch, and I won’t. I will still vote for MOC, which will allow me to still complain about politics

Everyone who takes the quiz chime in if you think it was right on or not

If we had done some of the things that folksy peanut farmer wanted years ago, we wouldn’t be in much of the mess we find ourselves. He put on a sweater and scared the heck out of big oil and big industry and they brought him down. I’m not sure there is a candidate that big oil and bit pharma can’t bring down now - the peanut farmer may have had the last shot.

As stated before, I was leaning Obama and quiz gave me Obama (though he was behind Kucinich. And, yes, when I was small I thought I saw a UFO in San Antonio!)

H supports Clinton but came up Obama on the quiz. Clinton was third (perhaps it’s her destiny) behind Dodd.

Will he switch now? or give Obama more thought?

Cartera,

Sorry I have absolutely no respect for Carter…18% interest rates gold at 800, gas was high also, botched iran hostages…ff to 2004 elections and he states that 3rd world countries don’t have voting irregularities as bad as we do.
Habitat for humanity is an amazing project and that I believe he deserves everybody’s respect, but as a pres…no. Remember Carter only beat Ford by a hair.

Let’s not forget good old brother Billy, my mom still has a 6 pack of Billy Beer in her closet.

My poll results were McCain #1 followed closely by Rudy. My actual preference is Rudy because I think he is the strongest on my number 1 issue - terrorism. However, I may vote for McCain in the primary since I think he has a better chance in the general. Since I believe that any of the Dems will be disasterous in fighting terrorism, I will go with any of the Republicans (other than Paul) that I believe will have the best chance to keep the Dems out of the White House.

H is open-minded. He was a strong early supporter of Clinton’s but has seen her short-comings as time has gone on, so I think he’d be willing to support Obama. Actually, we both will support whoever the Dems put up, as the past eight years have turned us into yellow-dog Democrats.

Voting for Bush in 2000 was a huge mistake on my part. Huckabee reminds me of that Bush. Through my previous job, I was able to meet both Bush and Huckabee and interview them in-depth. Both come across as nice, good ol’ boys – compassionate conservatives. Yeah, right. But fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. It would take a miracle to have me vote Republican again in the presidential election.

“according to yesterday’s WSJ, only ONE non-incumbent has won Iowa and then the White House - a peanut farmer from GA. Obama and Huckabee better hope that history changes…”

What? W won Iowa in 2000. He was the heir apparent, but not an incumbent.

1992 was also an unusual year in that since an Iowa senator was running, the other Democratic candidates simply ignored the state, and Harkin won in a landslide. That was so exceptional that it’s hard to view it as any kind of precedent. (Clinton, the eventual victor, finished first among the national candidates in Iowa that year.)
