@DrSCHC @Willynilly123 @Floridaboii
I’m with you guys too. I got a 211, and it’s right on the border for my state too.
Ahhh I hope things work out for all of us!! Keep fingers crossed

So, I know this might sound a little selfish and/or cocky, but I would really like to know if a 217 this year will almost certainly guarantee me NMSF in Ohio. I don’t think it has ever been up to 217 in the past few years, but it looks like the scores in Ohio may have been trending upwards. I’m also not sure if the test was significantly easier this year either (my PSAT score increased 9 points from a 208 last year, but this year’s score was also 8 down from my 2250 SAT two weeks later). So yeah, it’d be nice if someone just gave me some reassurance I tried looking at a few pages back to see if anyone else had my dilemma and I couldn’t find it, but anyways if this question has already been answered my laziness says sorry
BTW, Palm’s/Jacob Brunson’s early scoring methods were great Thanks a bunch!!
@tdallege yeah I’d say you’re good, looking at the last few years it’s never been that high and I really don’t think its possible to jump that much in one year. You’ll qualify.
Got a 186 and really happy about it! Where my average kids at?!
221 in DC would that qualify if in the past years it’s been 221 223 224 221 223 224?
@Floridaboii Was it a record high for AZ as well? Thanks for your response, feeling a bit better I hope those of us who are borderline all make the cutoff in our respective states
I’m sure a lot of people saw this already, but I only just found it http://publicuniversityhonors.com/2013/12/11/psat-national-merit-scholar-qualifying-scores-and-sat-equivalencies-by-state/
@Willynilly123
Yes, I believe it was. In fact, looking at historic data all the way back from 1999, the highest the AZ cutoff has been is 214. I think you made it but you will have to wait until September to know 100%. I really hate how long they make us wait
Looking at Florida data for the past seven years, a 211 would’ve sufficed 5 out of the 7 seven years. The exceptions are the cutoff scores for the classes of 2012 and 2014, which were anomalously high years for many states (many states had cutoffs higher than the norm, even some record highs). Thus, all I can do is hope that the class of 2016 is not another anomalously high year. Best of luck to those on the border!
Aw man guys I am scared out of my mind. Early in December I used the method that was posted on here to find out my score but halfway through the writing section the link stopped working and at that point I needed a perfect 80 on the writing section in order to score a 213, the most recent cutoff score for Arizona. And guess what? I did it! But now I am absolutely terrified that the cutoff will go up from last year’s 213. Can anyone quell my fears? As far as recent years’ trends, whether scores might drop this year (I felt that this year’s PSAT was pretty difficult), etc go.
I’m not entirely sure a harder test necessarily means lower cuts. If the test is unexpectedly difficult, that should theoretically show up in the initial scoring. It’s really going to depend on how everyone else does, and how many high scores there are in your state.
@PAMom21
I was thinking the same thing, because if the test is harder, wouldn’t the curve be adjusted to balance out the difficulty? Therefore not affecting overall scores that much? I’m not really sure why there have been the major fluctuations the past few years. I’d think cutoff scores should remain pretty consistent from year to year.
And in some states those scores do fluctuate over a pretty narrow band. PA for example has been 213-217 for years. You will all have a better shot with the guesswork when the state norms come out in late February, and again with the new commended cut in April. There isn’t much benefit to guessing at this stage.
I am a junior from GA who scored a 231. I don’t really understand what the NMSQT thing is or what being eligible means or basically anything about the program. I tried looking some stuff up but I don’t quite understand the importance/significance of it or the cutoff thing or why they wait until september of Senior Year to tell you about your status and yeah. Anyone willing to give me a crashcourse in this stuff? Please and thanks.
@Floridaboii Could you show me where you found this historical data, as I have been unable to find it. Thanks for the confidence boost
And yes, if the test is harder, I believe the curve should show up in everyone’s score already, it shouldn’t affect the overall cutoff much.
How many people get 240s? 1 person in my grade did, and a few people got within the 230 range. Our school is really small though, I believe we have around 50 people in 11th grade this year.
@smpak786 - check the national merit thread to see guaranteed scholarships. Essentially, your score is high enough for any State to qualify for National Merit Semi Finalist status and will allow you to apply to schools with major scholarships.
In how many states would a 218 likely make the cutoff?
@vmiller7723 pretty much most of the states except for some like Cali and NJ. There are about 5 or 6 states where 219 would be most likely below the cutoff, another 5 or 6 where 218 would be a 50/50, and the rest would be almost a guarantee above the cutoff.
Anyone else still waiting on PSAT scores? Our school swears that the College Board hasn’t sent them yet. I’m finding this increasing hard to believe since we were originally told the scores would be handed out on 12/12! We haven’t gotten an email with the code yet either. The homeschoolers that took the PSAT at our school have had their scores for weeks and all the neighboring school districts have their scores so it’s not a regional thing. What the heck could be going on? The school says they will put the scores on Naviance as soon as they arrive. I actually do believe they don’t have the scores yet, but what the heck could cause such a delay?
Sounds like a mail snafu. But that doesn’t explain why no email from College Board. I’d call CB about the email, anyway!
@3scoutsmom Sigh. I am so tired of the misinformation that comes from school administration. Ya know? I can’t count the number of times I was told something that was an outright lie.
