Official RD 2011 Decisions Thread

First rejection right here…quite disappointing. The first ever rejection from anything I have ever gotten in my life. Never gotten rejected by a girl, never gotten cut from a sport team/club, so needless to say it was kind of a smack in the face. I knew Vanderbilt was somewhat of a reach for me; however, I still had hope and now it just all crashed down into the ground. Congratulations to everyone who has already been previously accepted, I applaud you all on your amazing academic statistics. I just wish I would have not saved my academic potential until my junior year in high school. Good luck everyone with the whole college experience.

I was rejected because my class rank was only about top 18%, and my SAT Critical Reading score was low (590), Math was good (740) and so was Writing (680). Everything else I offered was very stellar. If I could start high school over, I would, just so I could guarantee myself acceptances into schools like that of Vanderbilt. I envy all of you who have already been accepted and I hope you have a great time at a wonderful institution like that of Vanderbilt.

Really happy… was hoping I would get in but still thrilled (heard it was really tough from in state)

DVC04 - Don’t know why you were rejected but hope you find a good match someplace. It’s been 30 years since I went through this myself and I just can’t believe how much more qualified the students are now than we were. Going through this as a parent for the first time, I am as much in awe of the students who aren’t getting as those who are.

As to those who are in, congratulations and I hope you find college (either Vandy or elsewhere) enjoyable, challenging and helpful.

Decision: Waitlisted

[] Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: My Why Vandy essay was really lackluster. I think if I’d put more than two hours into it, I may have had a shot.[*] Other thoughts:[/ul]

Did anyone’s acceptance include Merit scholarship money? It seems to me when our daughter heard from V a few years ago the Merit scholarship info came a few days later. S was accepted into engineering, but merit scholarship info not mentioned.

seefoxrun,

No, Brandon is a National Merit Scholar who has named Vandy as his 1st choice school, and his acceptance package did not include his National Merit Scholar award - only the financial need package part.

I was wondering about that, too - but as he was just notified that he was an actual Scholar this past Monday, he may not get notification of any award from Vandy until he accepts/denies the award from National Merit.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:

* SAT: 1970 (730M/600CR/640W/10E)

 • SAT IIs: 720 -P,650- Math II, 740 - C
 • GPA: N/A (But if converted to the US system it becomes 3.85+/4.0)
 • Rank:7/59

Subjective:

* Essays: Personal Statement was pretty good, Why Vanderbilt emphasised on how Vanderbilt’s research programs helped out in my future aspirations and commented on their alumni network and campus.

 • Teacher Recs: Awesome (According to them)
 • Counselor Rec: Awesome (According to the counselor)
 • Hook (if any): UAE/Indian (I don’t know how Vanderbilt looks at me) and I made a robot for my Science Exhibition which implemented concepts from Maths, Physics and programming.

Location/Person:

* State or Country: United Arab Emirates

 • School Type: Private
 • Ethnicity: Asian Indian
 • Gender: Male

Other Factors:

* Extracurriculars: 3 projects in Science and Maths Exhibition, Teacher during Teacher’s Day celebration.

 • Why I think I was accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I really have no idea about my Why Vandy essay. I wrote a very similar essay to Duke and got rejected by Duke. Probably my major, location helped me out.
 • Other thoughts: I don’t think i will come to vanderbilt if i don’t get any aid. UIUC looks to be a better bet when it comes to Engineering. Actually can’t decide…Vanderbilt is good overall but UIUC is good for Engineering. Have to think about it now that Vandy has accepted me.

Other Factors:
Extracurriculars: Girl Scouts (earned Silver Award, earning Gold Award), class treasurer, lots of cs stuff I’m too lazy to type out
Why I think I was accepted/deferred: Well-rounded
Other thoughts: They gave me a much better financial aid package than I was expecting. I’m only a little bit worried about not fitting into the whole “J-Crew/Ralph Lauren” thing. It’s between Vandy and Chapel Hill for me now.

@ heathergee: Did u receive the email or an actual letter for your admission decision.
