No one has gotten anything yet?

got rejected from rice undergrad =//
damn wasnt expecting that…

yea, i was wailtlisted undergrad. i guess that’s a rejection from baylor too =/

Hey im gonna be applying for this program later on, I was wondering how tough it is to get this program…in terms of # of applicants and chances for people who live OUTSIDE Texas.
Thanks

so to be honest I am a Rice-Baylor student (entering Rice this fall) so I had no involvement with admissions decisions or any of that…

about 1000 people apply to Rice saying they’d like to be considered for the program.
about 300 of those get into Rice and their applications get forwarded on to Baylor for review.
Baylor selects about 50 to fly to Houston during Owl Days and interview with med school students and professors.
Of that 50, 12-14 students are chosen for the program and the rest of the finalists are put onto a waitlist. They don’t tell you the order in which you’re put on the waitlist, and your chances of getting off the waitlist are entirely dependent on whether the R-B scholars choose to accept the offer and deny other schools.

Overall, I would say it’s extremely difficult to get into this program, but it’s definitely worth a shot =)

Wow. Do RB scholars typically deny HYPS and such? And are you allowed to accellerate the program by a year?

I think you want to go into medicine, you would be crazy to deny this program (or many of the other top programs e.g. USC, BU, Northwestern, caltech/ucsd, Brown, CWRU, etc.) for HYPS…but I’m sure there are people who do.
So, yes many people in this program reject HYPS.
And no, it’s not an accelerated program.

Is this the hardest one to get into? cause when i look at all the programs financially and prestige wise…this one seems like the best deal…opinions?

I would say R-B is one of the more competitive ones out there, especially because Rice tends to offer merit money (something Brown will not do).

When I went to interview, the girls sitting next to me had already gotten into Stanford and MIT. Needless to say, I was a little freaked out. haha.

Just to give you an idea, I turned down the following for R-B: Dartmouth, Cornell, Vandy, Emory, Middlebury, Tulane (merit scholarship for 1/2 tuition), UF (basically free ride), and FSU (basically free ride).

Hey! My name’s Suj, I’m new here, and I’m worried a lot about this Rice/Baylor mumbo jumbo. I really don’t think I’m good enough, and honestly, i dont think i have time at all to improve more than I’m already trying to.

Here are the stats I’ll have at the end of this summer:

a 2250 SAT, with 750 for math and 740 for critical reading

my school is weird and said my gpa was 98.5 unweighted, but after that im sure ill have something over a 100, so idk how tht translates to a 4.0 scale.

I take ap chem, ap english, ap bio, ap calculus, and ive been in honors history for 3 years

I might be valedictorian, idk yet, im a junior…

and for sports i got varsity track, cross country, jv soccer, and varsity tennis for 3 years with an mvp in tennis this year

for ec’s…

i have 300 hours total in a hospital,

over this summer I’m gonna do some research to better my hospital in the field of wound care.

and then other stuff… like national honor society, i received the bausch & lomb honorary science award, some air force thing… idk

but a major thing that i think might look really good for rice, maybe baylor, is that I was in the scripps national spelling bee, when i was in a couple years ago, but the problem is that i wasn’t in high school. Anyways i got #5 in the nation, so im pretty proud, but idk if i can use this for rice/ baylor

I know u guys cant tell me for sure if i can get in, but if u guys think im a very likely candidate, or if u can give me tips on what to do during the school year, thtd be great. Thanks!

I’d say you have strong enough scores and ECs to have some chance of being made a finalist.
Beyond that, it’s really up to you and your personality.

The spelling bee thing is interesting but only if you make it interesting. if that makes any sense. It says a lot about your dedication and desire to achieve, but make sure you don’t sound “mechanical” or like you pursue one thing at the expense of other areas of life. I’m sure this isn’t an issue for you but remember to make sure your achievements show something about your character (don’t just list them and leave it up to admissions officers to interpret).

At any rate, I kind of doubt the spelling bee thing would be a factor at Baylor. They are mainly focused on who you are, not what you do. My interviews mentioned my accomplishments only in that they showed what kind of person I am and that I know who I am. What they were really concerned with was how I would handle certain medical ethics issues, what I do for fun, the most important people in my life, why I love learning, the most important experiences in my life, etc. Basically what kind of person I am. It’s rare for high school students to be mature enough to have figured things out but they are looking for kids who are balanced, centered, and will make good doctors. which is not just being good at chemistry (which is obvious from the fact that I made it into R-B and definitely did not get a 5 on my AP Chem exam).

So for Rice, the most important factors are: transcript, test scores, recs, ECs, essays, basically the normal stuff.

for Baylor I would say: test scores and GPA (only in that they show if you can distinguish yourself from everyone else, and that you are a smart person who confronts challenges head-on), and the supplemental essays for the R-B app. There are like 3 or 4 supplemental essays that you write, all of which provide insight into your character. I think only one of them is about medicine. They will probably look at your Common App essay also, but won’t place as much value on it as Rice does because they have all your other essays to look at too.

based on what you said, becoming a finalist is really not out of the realm of possibility. so stick with it and let me know if you have questions =]

Hey, thanks a lot college316, that really makes sense to me now. :)

Hi, I’m kuracisto and I’m an international student(i don’t have US citizenship or residency)
I have hardly seen foreign students at BA/MD programs like Rice/Baylor
and i heard that foreign students are hardly accepted in med school
so, i don’t know my chance to be accepted at rice/baylor or other ba/md programs
do you guys think i have chance?

Race: Asian(from far east?)

GPA: 4.0/4.0(unweighted, my school is school outside US and a local school?
so I assume my GPA to be that?)

rank: no rank?

SAT 1: 1600 or 2360

SAT subjects:
bio 770 world history 800 math IIC 800 chem 780 physics 750+(i expect)

APs:
chem, bio, stat, cal BC, world history, psychology, micro econ, macro econ,
environmental science(I think 1/3 of these are 4’s and 2/3 of these are 5’s?)

ECs:

Asian Science Camp 2009(2009 Asian Science Camp/Japan
several Nobel laureates give lectures?)

research internship at hospital(one of famous hospital in my country??? an affiliate medical center of Harvard Medical School?)

club veep once
and founder and president of other club?

volunteering at local health center

shadowing doctor

your stats and ECs look amazing.
good work.

To be honest I really have no idea what the process/procedure is for international students. Perhaps you should contact someone in Rice Admissions and ask whether R/B is applicable to international students or not…I feel like this question has been asked already but I don’t remember what the answer was.

good luck though!
I hope it works out for you!
=]

I was just wondering what my chances of getting accepted were. Here are my stats
GPA- 4.45 weighted
Class Rank- 6 of 898
ACT-36
SAT II’s
Math II-800
Chemistry-800
AP’s
Chemisty-5
Calc BC-5
European History- 5
US History- 4
English Language- 4
Extracurriculars- 150+ volunteer hours at library, hospital, chinese school, and nursing home. Varsity Tennis. IMEA participant.

Your stats rock, but I think this program is a complete gamble…once all SAT 2sare above 780, all SATs are above 2300, and all ACTS are 35+ its all about your MEDICAL extra curriculars and how you come off as a person (aka someone who they believe is mature, dedicated, and who KNOWS what being a doctor really entails.

Your stats are very competitive and combined with your volunteer EC’s give you a profile that is similar to that of many of the applicants who have been offered a place in the program. You do not need research, publications or similar medical EC’s. Significant volunteer work that has a medical connection will be a plus.

Can someone tell me what the deal is with early decision enrollment being a requirement? What happens if a person gets into Rice but cannot get into the Rice/Baylor program? Wouldn’t early decision screw them?

Btw can anyone who got accepted pm me their stats? i just want to get an idea of what i need to achieve.

Early decision is not a requirement at Rice/Baylor. In fact most Rice/Baylor applicants did not apply ED. Until two or three years ago, Rice had a non-binding interim decision program; and one had to apply either binding ED or non-binding ID to be eligible for Rice/Baylor. Rice no longer has an ID program, and those interested in Rice/Baylor can apply regular decision; but the application deadline is earlier if you want to be considered for Rice/Baylor. Check the Rice website for specifics.

As for improving stats, the last I checked one could not improve an ACT of 36 or Math and Chem SAT 2’s of 800. Throw in a Physics SAT 2 above 750 and you certainly will be set stat wise.
