In response to MrMeursault, it’s honestly not about whether certain people chose Yale over Stanford or vice versa. After high school, academic stats (which is what makes those posters “CC celebs”) don’t mean much. The only things that will really count, and that will really make a difference in others’ lives, are entirely up to a person’s personality and character, and the Stanford admissions committee realizes this (as reflected in their decisions every year), which is why STANFORD IS AWESOME.

^ But measures of one’s “personality and character” are quite subjective, and conveying a fake personality isn’t too hard if all the admissions committee has are a few short essays, a personal statement and some usually generic statements from teachers and counselors to judge an applicant with.

The only thing that we can really say about the Stanford admissions committee is that they are a bit less objective criteria-centric than HYP (the difference is really almost negligible though). And just to make it clear, I’m a big fan of Stanford as well, just not at the same magnitude as Yale :)

Several very high-stat people I know decided to use their REA on Yale primarily because Yale defers many more candidates than does Stanford, not because they ultimately preferred Yale. IOW, they were trying to reduce their risk, rather than expressing an unfettered preference. Yale REA is for wusses, compared to Stanford REA. ; )

^ I’d say that’s one of the major reasons (though I’d call it a smart move rather than being a wuss lol). In my situation, I just liked Yale more than Stanford (mainly due to my desire to stay on the East Coast) and was willing to forgo applying Stanford REA as a legacy for Yale SCEA. Overall, the differences are pretty trivial. Stanford REA and Yale SCEA both draw the most competitive applicant pools for each HS class.

^Your strategic REA to Yale may be further enhanced by the fact that this year, Yale’s early apps were down a tiny bit, while Stanford’s are up almost 7% over last year. Good luck!
