Official Stanford SCEA 2017 Applicants' Discussion Thread

@justiniee: haha thanks girl. Well, we’ll find out soon :D

As others have reiterated, it would honestly be the greatest thing to /ever/ occur if we all met at Stanford Admit Weekend next April.

I’ll most certainly be back on here tomorrow /just/ in case Stanford, for whatever, reason decides to release its decisions tomorrow. :D

@yorie: btw if we get acceted, we will be famous~~ do you know last year this one viet girl got into harvard but she chose stanford? she was on the news~~~ hahaha >:D motivation to be viet pride? xDDD

If we get accepted, we should make signs with our screen names on them to find each other. I have the image of those taxi drivers who hold signs in airports for people…it’s sort of humorous for some reason.

@justiniee: oh yeah I definitely heard that story all day from my dad lol. Very inspirational! Of course I would chose Stanford over Harvard! Lived in Harvard for 2 months, didn’t like it that much :(

@yorie: not meaning to be creepy or anything but do you want to add my facebook? :)) we can practice french together~
apparently I’m fascinated by you :"P ho ho

@yorie: lol I would choose stanford too. just because I love the palm trees and I hate snow xD lucky you. I have been stuck in CA for five years already. Never got to travel that much… oh well college will be the time to explore the world! :D

@Justiniee: just sent you a private email  and no you’re not being creepy! I was about to ask the same question ;))

The past 4-5 pages of posts have been wonderful to read. I come back from an alto sax solo in my concert to find a discussion on religion vs. atheism vs. morals vs. judgement vs. anything really. I was JUST talking about this with my friends. Religion can be the root cause of hatred within societies, leading to conflict and a closed-minded approach to social interactions. It is sometimes these preconceived notions that accompany religion with which we base our stereotypes of people upon. Everyone does it; it is impossible to be completely free of judgment of others, and religion is often synonymous with judgment. However, I do not particularly agree nor disagree with religion. Religion provides followers with a common belief and faith with which to look towards. Religion can provide moral, spiritual, and physical support. But those who are not religious seem to do just as fine. It is true that many scientists are not religious because the point at which God or a religious deity controls the occurrences in our universe cannot be agreed upon. Scientists need to be focus on the task at hand without a nagging concern that supernatural forces may have caused the occurrence they are trying to explain. Therefore, I think religion is a good thing, but when the line between religion and judgment becomes blurred, conflict may ensue. What we should do is truly tolerate people with differences; what we believe in may not be what someone else believes in, and we need to not care about our differences. As for the downfall of societies, differences in opinion and corruption are the causes, and religion is just one part in the opinions that eventually tear apart a society. People can believe whatever they want to believe; we should not care, we should not pour hatred upon them, and most importantly, we should not be so concerned that what they believe in is not what we believe in. And finally, despite science, we cannot deny nor confirm the existence of God.

Not even bothering to read back on these, so I apologize if my thoughts are not connected.

Whoever talked about Revolution like 6 pages before. I really liked that show. I love Charlie, shes amazing. Aaron, mr. google, is probably my favorite character though.

@Kurisutenx YES Totally. If I get in, I’m bringing a huge hatat5 sign.

@Holocene Although in some cases I disagree with what you say, your arguments/statements are presented in a very intelligent manner and I applaud you for that. I totally agree with your point that as society progresses and ages, religion slowly corrodes becoming less popular with time. I am one that believes that religion was once a progressive ideal and was an important step in the formation of society. It played an important role governing the ideas that people could not understand with a means to understand them. Now, however, religion has lost that emphasis. Scientific progress has shed light on many of the boons and abilities attributed to god(s) depending on the faith that one believes. Now specifically, I believe that religion is the second best approach to understanding an idea. The best is scientific understanding as scientific evidence has been corroborated and exists as a resource for the people of this time period.

I love you norwhale<3333

How much do you think qualifying for USAMO twice will help getting in to Stanford?

Hey everyone, maybe I just missed something totally obvious, but do you know if our letter will be in the email or will we be asked to go to another portal-like webpage to enter an ID and password or something? I know a lot of my friends that have gotten their results had to do it the second way.

i think the issue is about tolerance. people say tolerate. don’t judge and what not. but really what we should do is accept. but acceptance is hard for people with a stubborn set of preconceived notions. we should listen to what others have to say, respect their opinion, and maybe even alter our own based on that. our own morals and ideals should constantly be changing. the lack of change within each person is the hardest part. but humans hardly even like change - it tends to carry a negative connotation. (although obama impressively attempted to refute that)

@owk: they will send it to our emails by dec 15. + only the acceptees will get their letter mails a few days after dec 15

How much do you think qualifying for USAMO twice will help getting in to Stanford?

@Justiniee: So they wont link us to another website? That’s kinda nice I guess :stuck_out_tongue: I know some friends were dying of anticipation having to go log in somewhere else and wait for the page to load agonizingly slowly.

1) I must say, I absolutely LOVE this thread.
2) I absolutely LOVE the religious discussion.
3) To add my own two cents to the religious debate: I myself kind of feel a bit like an outcast in contemporary American Christianity. I definitely consider myself deeply Christian, but at the same time, I put a large amount of emphasis on accepting science (I believe in evolution, the Big Bang, ect). I also consider myself VERY liberal, which seems at odds with most other Christians in the U.S. I guess I’ve always seen the Bible as a book of freedom and love – love for our neighbors (whether they be gay or straight, rich or poor, saintly or sinner), love for the hopeless, and love for those marginalized from society. I’m always saddened by the bigotry that some other Christians try to justify through the Bible; it gives us all a bad name.

@jk as soon as they see that they’ll accept you immediately, they won’t even look at the rest of your app.

That had to be the most civil and rational religious discussion I’ve seen. That’s a very pleasant sight to see.
