***Official Thread for 2016 BSMD applicants***

when is the last date to be notified for northwestern?

yah, is there still hope for NU HPME interview notifications since the interviews are Feb 2-5 which is coming up very shortly

At RPI/Albany this morning 8 candidates from Union and 1 from RPI. They said its Union heavy in Jan and they get more RPI in Feb.Looks like a rolling decision but they categorize lot as deferred but first round of decisions shared early March.

Good info @stdmedsch . Good luck to you. It was kind of you to update while you are there! Thank you

My son had his Baylor2Baylor interview on Jan 22nd. Anyone from CC attended? I personally think it is very well organized and of course highly competitive. Of the 80 students invited, 15 will advance to 2nd round for March 25th interview.

For NW HPME some students received Feb 4, 5, 8, 9 dates.

@stdmedsch good luck to you. Anyone for Union+RPI interview today? We have our Union/AMC and RPI/AMC on 29th.

@88Mom88, congratulation on your NW HPME interview. Do you know whether unfortunate applicants receive the no interview email?

@88Mom88, Do you know if everyone who got HPME interview invitation had research experience?

@mocha16, research experience might be not critical for HPME interview as you are thinking. Someone, both Siemens 2015 and Intel STS 2016 semifinalists, have not yet been invited. hope the best.

@88Mom88 I have not, have you?

@Mocha16 For programs such as BU, NW HPME,
research experience is very important. Of the 6 students I know who applied to HPME over the past two years
all has research experience
4 were invited and the other two even with great research experience did not receive the interview invitation.

It is a combination of standardized tests, GPA, recs, essays, leadership, rigorous coursework, volunteer, research, publications, achievements/awards, activities, and clinical experiences. Your essays make a difference
they reveal your passion for medicine and who you are.

"It has been brought to our attention that there has been some confusion regarding the number of words required for the first essay, “Why do you want to be a doctor?” The word “characters” should be replaced by the word “words.” We would like to offer our apologies for this error.

Many of you have submitted essays that are 600-700 words long but there are some who have sent us essays that are 600-700 characters long. In order to be fair to everyone, we offer those who belong to the latter group a chance to re-submit an essay with 600-700 words by February 10th to admissions@medschool.pitt.edu.

Sincerely,
Office of Admissions, School of Medicine
Guaranteed Admit Program"

I thankfully submitted one with 600-700 words but for any of you who didn’t, here’s the email

@GoldenRock
I just wanted to ask if you were sure about hpme interviews and rejections coming together in batches? It looks like they’ll send the rejections after all the interview emails are sent out.

just got off the phone with penn state and they said they are done sending out interviews
will be hearing back by the 31st for regular admission

@88mom88 and @J2H239 Thanks for answer my question. I have everything (I worked hard on my essay), but research, I live in rural area, there is no research facility nearby. I have not received the invitation for HPME and I want to see what is my chance to get one.

@SmartAlec, I got this too. I think that most people submitted 600-700 characters. Because Characters doesn’t make sense, I have called and emailed multiple times to confirm the Characters vs. Words. Everyone at U Pitt answered the phone and email INSISTED it was Characters. I wondered when U Pitt realized that it was a mistake.

@Mocha16 did u submit characters? ouch, yah that is dumb, i cant believe they would insist on that and end up being wrong. honestly, when I submitted mine, I didnt even notice that it said characters. I just assumed words and wrote the essay lol

All: It is unfortunate there was a typo and inconsistency with respect to words or characters in Pitt form and the FAQ. As posted earlier by me it is Words. Also again note, it is ONLY 600 words (and not 600-700 words) because the form did not allow beyond 600 words (at least when my D submitted in Oct). So unless the site has changed now, you should plan to write for 600 words and not more than that

@anantha1832 NU HPME, my D informed she got the rejection on the day they sent the first interview notification, some time last week. But don’t assume any thing until you get notification one way or other. They process in batches over a period of time and not just 1 day like some colleges. GL

Hi all,

My S has an upcoming interview. Could you please let me know what type of questions are asked at these interviews?

Folks who have already had their interviews, if you could provide some insight that would be great.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
