Official UC Berkeley 2015 Transfer Thread

@h95130f I’m not into sharing a room but like the idea of student housing, so I’m going the privately owned student housing route (the Metropolitan). Pretty much a suite style dorm with an individual room and roommates.

@71mamba yes I believe you can. Email someone in L&S.

@ActuaryorBust Yes, it’s true that for the most part they kind of push you out. I thought this was true for all the UCs but maybe it’s not. If you are really into UCLA, I won’t try to steer you away from that because it’s a great school too. It also depends a lot on what your major is, and if you’re planning on going to grad school.

@71mamba Hi there. I have got same question as you. Yesterday visited reception, the worker from LS school told me there is a limitation of 4 semesters to take uppers. And we need to declare major first term transfer there.

@81Mamba Yes, for the the most part you can apply/declare any major within L&S if you meet the requirements. There may be some exceptions for impacted majors, I’m not sure. I myself declared a different major than the one I originally applied for in my UC app. I’m guessing you looked at the Econ prospective students page? It says you must apply in your first semester as a transfer. You should contact the Econ department just to make sure, and you will also speak to a major advisor at CalSO.

For those planning to apply for fall 2016, the personal statement prompts are not changing next year. If you don’t remember them, here they are:

Rejected for Kruschnitt Aspire scholarship ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Would it have made a difference?

Nope. I am surprised though because I thought the interview went really, really well. They are super stringent with it.

do you guys know if media studies is really a joke at uc berkeley?

Does anyone know anything about final semester grades at Berkeley? (Haas, ?)
Worried about possibly getting a C in a class, wanted to know if they will revoke my admission if so. :frowning:

It’s the number one rated communications dept in the world @imprincess. Since you think so lowly of it I think you should stick with sociology at ucla. I really hate these smug condescending statements about majors.
And you cannot switch into comm at UCLA as it’s a selective major,. Media Studies is also a much more theory-based (harder) dept than UCLA’s,

Is it a major requirement @smartworker? It could be a problem if it’s a pre-req. Otherwise they won’t care.

@lindyk8 Are you sure about that? I know Haas is extremely particular.

They are @holdencub, they’re massively picky, but everything I’ve ever heard or read is if it is not a pre-req they aren’t going to sweat it much. Of course, as I nastily got called out by someone before for voicing an opinion, it goes without saying I am not admissions and he needs to let them know, but as long as it’s not a pre-req I am pretty sure (my opinion) that he will be ok. Again, my opinion only. :)))

My opinion…

One other thing I want to make clear. Everyone needs to reach out to admissions and read their provisional contracts. This should go without saying. College confidential is a place to get support. It is NOT the admissions office. So anything I say is my opinion, and in this case meant to calm someone’s nerves because I believe it will be fine. Obviously, they need to talk to admissions. Someone accused me of lulling people into thinking I was the admissions office. Uh, noooo. I don’t think ppl think that, haha.

@smartworker I am adding one caveat. I assumed your GPA is very high if you got into haas. The only issue that might arise (besides it being a pre-req!) is if your C lowers your term GPA below 3.0. Then it would be another issue to try and negotiate with them.

Hey, did anyone get the UC Berkeley welcome reception invitation? There’s a reception at a private residence in Alamo, Woodside, and SF.

I too have heard horrible things about the media department. Every professor has told me not to go there and my friends who have already been there for a year have been extremely disappointed. Not sure where @lindyk8 heard it’s the best in the world…? Maybe for a certain aspect but not all communication?

@onmyway8 I’m not sure why profs at a CCC would tell you to specifically avoid media studies and that it’s terrible. We know some students there who love it and one got a job at facebook. It is theory-based and not industry hands-on which turn off a lot of people and the dept is small but it has a lot of interdisciplinary courses available, including cog sci, film, Internet, and marketing/advertising courses in Haas. It’s just odd a gaggle of CCC profs would rip it to shreds. They may have mentioned the theory-based vs hands-on aspects, but rip it as terrible? That seems excessive for ppl who aren’t (and never were) in the dept.

To me, the big concern is you cannot declare into the major (even though accepted) until you have taken Media Studies 10 there first, and word is it is really hard.
