congrats naijagrl. sounds like you must have had a wonderful story to tell in your essays

edit: i re-read my post, and thought i may have come off the wrong way. i’m not saying it seems as though it’s your essays that pulled you through because I think your stats are bad, but that it sounds like you have had a life of stories worth telling. again, congrats, and this isn’t some back-handed compliment!

hi MBP, sorry about the late response.

You have the highest Latin score I have seen and I want to know (you could PM me) how you prepared and did you take the subject test after 3 years of study? D is currently in her 3rd year and we are contemplating that she will take it either in June or December this year.

^BarristerDad, I’ll send you this in a PM too, but in case I forget or it doesn’t go through, I’ll reply here as well.

I took the June version of the test after three years of Latin (Latin I Standard, Latin II Standard, Latin III Honors; standard was because of scheduling, not so much performance, though). The only book I found was made by REA, so I used that. It was actually fairly helpful, from what I went through; the practice tests were very similar in difficulty to the real thing and I suppose their review sections were also solid. I kind of sort of maybe didn’t really get around to preparing for it until the day before, since I dedicated my studies to Physics (teacher only taught us ~60% of what would be on that SAT II; probably should not have taken it), but then again you kind of prepare for it every day in Latin class. The only thing with REA is that their practice tests are 71 questions; the real thing has 75, if I recall correctly.

It really depends on how much your daughter has covered already, I suppose. I think she would be fine to take it, though. I’d go for the June version again, just because you’re guaranteed to have that back in time for applications, and you’ll at least have the December safety net if she has a bad day.

Hopefully this helps, to some extent. If not, I’m still open to questions.

BarristerDad- I’ll chime in on the Latin SAT II- I know you didn’t direct the question at me, but my score (740) was fairly similar to Amadeuic’s, so maybe I can be of assistance with my two cents :)

Honestly, I think the test is a bit of a crapshoot (ugh- the most overused word on this site, but whatever). Really, it all comes down to knowing the vocab, especially the odd ones that don’t take accusative objects, for example. Really, I didn’t study at all for the SAT, and honestly, I don’t regret it. All of the little details I learned in class helped me 1,000x times more than those practice books- but then, that’s the case with every standardized test I’ve ever taken. Sooo… essentially I guess the point of this post is to pay attention in class and decide whether hardcore review books are the right course for your daughter.

I did the optional essay too, on how a book influenced a decision I made, etc.

VLPK93…Is Chicago your first choice, or just a safety school? Your credentials are impeccable. I hope you are considering many other top schools, although I am hoping my junior D applies early action in the Fall to U Chic as well! We visited a few years ago on vacation (The Frank Lloyd Wright house that abuts the campus is AMAZING!) and were transfixed by the campus atmosphere and the programs.

vlpk93…congratulations! I assume you intend to go to U of C, and don’t know why you would need to apply elsewhere when you are already in one of the best schools in the country. I hope my D can join you there in the fall.

I was looking on this forum to see if anybody knew when RD decisions were coming out. I saw this thread so thought I would post my D’s information. She got deferred but is still hoping to get accepted RD. I don’t really know how to do the formatting so just copied the information from the post above.

Comments: GC called to ask if there was anything she could do to improve her application after she was deferred. Admissions officer just said to write a letter about her interest in attending which she sent a few months ago. We visited the campus last May and she interviewed with a person in the admissions office. She thought the interview went well.

^ It is people like your daughter who make me glad I was only deferred- I have FAR lower stats than hers, it is a small miracle I wasn’t rejected.

Nobody knows when decisions come out. If you read the waiting for decisions threads regarding EA, you’ll see that not knowing makes for some very anxious students. :)

I hope I can have an accepted post here, when 15th of Dec. comes, THE DAY!! good luck to me and to everyone who is applying for UChicago 2009, hope everyone is satisfied at last!!
