LifeSmarts - Consumer competition. Basically Jeopardy for Econ. nerds. 5 member team. We won states the last 3 years, and have placed 3rd, and 4th nationally. This year we’re going to Hollywood to compete nationally. (Captain)
- Job/Work Experience: 4 years at a Marina, longer than I can remember at my Dad’s restaurant.
- Volunteer/Community service: Earthquake relief in Chile, tons of hours with Rotary, volunteered at an orphanage in Chile.
- EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): There was a short answer? Oops.
- Common App Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Wrote about how Chile changed me. Generic, but important because it showed a lot about me. I used Tim O’Brien’s novel “The Things they Carried” for inspiration and talked about things that I have metaphorically carried through life, and how my “things” changed in Chile.
- Optional Favorite Things Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): Didn’t do.
- Why Chicago (details in the essay and personal opinions on it): Generic, but dropped a few professor’s names, like the author of Freakonomics.
- Extended Chicago Essay (subject - if you want, include essay prompt if you did #5 - and personal opinions on it): I did the “Find X” essay and wrote about how Xs are just intersections and life is all about finding the next one to cross.
- Teacher Recommendation (only if you saw it): Both were well intentioned, but neither teacher was a great writer so they struggled to express themselves. I think their intentions were clear enough.
- Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): Didn’t see.
- Additional Rec (only if you saw it): Superintendent wrote me a spectacular rec. about my time as School Board representative.
- Interview: Didn’t have one. Didn’t realize you had to request one until too late.

Reflection

* Strengths: My ECs unique, especially being an exchange student as a high schooler.
- Weaknesses: SAT II scores were lower than I wanted, Teacher recs were iffy and I didn’t like my common app essay all that much.

General Comments: Good luck to everyone else! If you were wait listed, keep hope! I’m, most likely, not going to be attending UChicago (unless Brown, UPenn, Harvard and Geogetown all ditch me)
