^lol, i like your username :p

If I said they don’t ever read your essays without the 4 years I misspoke. However generally that is true. Feel free to ask your friend who works there, oh wait you don’t have one. If one of the best colleges in the country STRONGLY suggests 4 years of a foreign language, you best take all 4…to be sure. And yes, they use the word strongly.

@ kangster *** thats crazy man whts the rigor of yur curriclum u play sports do any extras cuz i know some people who got 28s, 30s that got in i mean i hope i get in with a 28 tough luck man but my extras are prooly the best in my city i also have made $500,000 starting a trading fund. I just kinda slack in other places hopefully they look past my grades and score and see that i have taken the most rigorous classes in my school lets hope and gl to everybody that hasnt heard and all the people who were deferred but i have a good feeling guys
enjoy and stop worrying it wont help

I should have also said I am specifically talking about the college of LSA

I still have not heard - are there others out there who are legacies who have not heard?

i think that wolverinemom might have some truth i am in IB spanish 5 so 5 years of a foreign language ( last two were A.P-IB and i hate spanish but i did anyways)…I think that they have soo many people that have 4+ that they will think less of the other kids, but it doesnt mean they will not read the eessays… they do a wholeistic review… so they look at the student overall u wont be rejected just because of one thing… some people like me who took 5 years of spansih got reject or deferred and some people with 2 got in… they must have read the essays but must have really shined in another place to outweigh that lack

I don’t see why taking four years of a foreign language should ever determine whether you get into the school.

You can shoot the messenger if it makes you feel better, I’m just telling you what my friend who works at the college said. She is the head of fundraising for one of the colleges within UM. She said that if you don’t have 4 years of foreign language they may not even read your essays. They have to start weeding apps out & that is one of the places they start. Believe me or not, I honestly couldn’t care less. That doesn’t mean that 100% of kids with less than 4 years won’t get it. It just means it is ONE of the deciding factors. One that carries a lot of weight at Michigan. They get thousands of amazing applicants & have to narrow them down somehow.

Like I said believe it or not, it doesn’t matter to me. My kid got in.

it shows that u are willing to learn something that is beyond yur current horizon and willing to embrace different cultures… no rednecks… etc.

oy! wolverinemom! ive seen the light! i couldnt have been accepted because i have taken 9 AP’s, captained varsity swim team, been a 3 sport athlete all 3 years, section leader of cello in school orch, got killer recommendations from 3 teachers, ranked in the top 10%, participated in student government and class councils, had a best buddy (studnet w learning disability who i was paired with and hang out with all the time), awesome essays, year and a half of work experience, volunteer hours w blood drives and toys for tots, running pep rally 3 years in a row, setting up haitian relief fund for my school following the earth quake, being a senior mentor in a freshman homeroom, and being a master tutor. it was my 5 years of spanish. genius.

lol^^^^ … i soo wish i was accepted lol

haha, I’ve been on CC for a little bit, but I thought this deserved that I finally make a username…sigh. I really don’t know. Maybe it’s because I turned it in on the deadline date. But far before midnight…?
Any feedback, guys?

i’m taking 4 APs this senior year and did varsity fencing for 3 years, JV cross and track for 1 year.

i also hav a friend at stanford admissions who says if u dont hav a 4.0 gpa they shred your app or delete it from their server without second look

@ wolverinemom15, There’s this thing called holistic admissions. Have you ever heard of it? I have some info on it if you’re interested!!! [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Application Review](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/prospectivefreshmen/appreview.php)

and they do reject people like 15-20% ( i think) of the applicant pool and its not like they give a **** about u to keep u if they didnt like 1 thing about u atleast the people who got reject4ed prolly dont post becuase they dont want to think about it anymore since that lost their chance which i would do if i were them why remind myself about it. i think 50%-60% is the deferred then rest is accept just my 2 cents correct me if i am wrong

@wolverinemom2015

I got in with 3 years of Spanish… (LSA)
The admissions officers say a lot of things…

Also, while all of you here are upset that you got deferred with great test scores I have yet to see anyone who was deferred today post any leadership positions besides sports captains

For the record…directly from their site. (like I said…not ALL kids with less than 4 years are rejected & not all with 4 years are accepted, it is just ONE of the ways they weed out the pack when making decisions)

“Freshman applicants to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts are strongly encouraged to take four years of language study, but only two years of the same language are required for admission.”

Feel free to go right to the page yourself…

[Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Requirements](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/prospective/prospectivefreshmen/requirements.php)

There are no concrete reasons for why some of us got deferred and some got accepted other than the fact that Michigan is a highly selective school with a massive number of applicants. Obviously, the kids that got in deserve it and should be commended (yes, even wolverinemoms kid).

You’ve made your point that language is an important criteria for michigan, you’ve also been proved wrong in that multiple people have gotten in with less than 4 years. do us all a favor and get off the message board and please, for the love of god, don’t ever speak to students like that after they’ve gone through the extremely painful process of being deferred from a dream school
