Ohio State University... Nice Campus?

^^^ rjk, I must say that your inputs are intriguing and that I already know the facts that you mentioned. My focus was really on the economical front of Detroit and how the city should find ways to reinvent itself (thereby creating more jobs!) and perhaps turn into a smaller scale downtown Chicago (Mag mile / Millenium park / Navy Pier) where the it feels vibrant and safer at night (of course we all know south side of Chicago is just as crime-ridden as downtown Detroit). So that people of metro Detroit would be willing to spend more time at night around the neighborhood of Cobo Center rather than fear for their lives. And people from the affluent metro cities of Detroit could come into downtown with their luxury vehicles at night for more live entertainments besides limos to the Fox theater / Detroit opera house or valet parking for Tiger/Lions’ games. I can tell you that while at TOSU, I did, in numerous occasions having fun with friends in the middle of the night either walking by the Greater Columbus Convention Center on high street or having sushi at Haiku without much worry of the safety issue. Anyways, Barrons is right! I should stick the topic to TOSU from this point on. My bad :P

P.S. Thanks for correcting my typing errors, rjk. I believe I also misspelled ‘Greektown’ … ;P

^^^It’s OK. I have to say I am not looking forward to the game this weekend. I am afraid it’s going to be six in a row for the Buckeyes. :-(

^I love Haiku!!! Great spot.

The Short North is awesome!!!

I think barrons has got it right. Today Ohio State is probably an average to slightly above average state university. IMO, it’s on the rise under Gee’s leadership, but its size will certainly impede its progress up any rankings.

And while no one will compare its campus to a true beauty like U Virginia, Ohio State and Columbus is certainly not a bad or ugly place. I think that the school (with its huge student population) and the nearby downtown exude a positive energy and the city is home to a well-diversified business community. There’s actually a lot going on in Columbus and its economic prospects are much better than a place like Detroit with its still-heavy emphasis on the auto industry.

However, I think that some of the comments above are a bit strong, particularly the comparisons of the undergraduate education at Ohio State vs. U Michigan. U Michigan often touts itself as a peer to many higher ranked schools. Perhaps within academia and on the impenetrable/unmoving PA scoring, but on real metrics that compare the undergraduate settings of each college, the truth is that U Michigan is probably about as close to those higher ranked peers as Ohio State is to U Michigan.

I chose three Top 20 privates to compare with-Notre Dame, Rice, and Brown. I could’ve chosen any of the Top 20 and come up with similar results.

One more year of mediocrity, Rich Rod should ‘retire’ alongside Bill Martin imho. Michigan deserves a better coach, period. Big Ten needs Michigan to bounce back as well as the lackluster rivalry in the public eyes. I hated Lloyd Carr when he had MSU / OSU’s number. However, this guy is a true michigan man if not another Bo who ran a top footall program with integrity and character that most michigan and buckeye fans across would be proud of regardless of the record til the time they pass on the torch. R2 on the other hand is a train wreck for the michigan program so far as I am concerned. I’ve been ‘amazed’ by how many negative publicities that this guy generated since day-one of his arrival at the Big House (and you think Gary Moeller was bad…). Oh well, as a Sparkeye, I really should not comment much if at all on our rival besides wish y’all g’Luck on Saturday. Who knows, maybe R2 could pull a '69 stunning upset on the bucks!

Brown: 11
Ohio State: 10

Rice: 3

Notre Dame: 0

Rice: 12
Ohio State: 11

Brown: 3
Notre Dame: 3

Hawkette, no average temps in February? ;)

Is hawkette trying to boost up her alma mater again?

ucb,
Come on. Let rjk do his own homework. That would be a first. Hehe.

Anyway, thanks for your numbers on NAS and NAE members. But let’s also put them in context relative to the size of these places and how many students are actually studying STEM subjects.

% NAE/NAS faculty to undergrads in STEM programs , # of students in STEM programs , College

0.16% , 1923 , Notre Dame
1.22% , 1230 , Rice
0.85% , 1641 , Brown

0.52% , 8578 , U MICHIGAN
0.22% , 9651 , OHIO STATE

Also, there are a lot more non-STEM students at a college who could care less about faculty members in remote departments who likely spend next to zero time with undergraduate students (whether at a public or a private).

And I wouldn’t discount the overall student faculty ratio at these schools. That number for Ohio State was surprising to me.

% not in STEM programs , # of students not in STEM programs , College

77% , 6440 , Notre Dame
61% , 1924 , Rice
76% , 5196 , Brown

67% , 17416 , U MICHIGAN
76% , 30561 , OHIO STATE

rjk,

Good luck in the game on Saturday. You’re going to need it. :p

^^Hawkette, thanks for the impressive (as always @_@) data set!!

In spite of TOSU administration rolling at full steam trying to propel the school into the Top-10 great public institutions such as Wisconsin or Illinois of the Big Ten in the next decade or so; I, for one, am content with TOSU consistently ranked in the high 40s with Texas and Washington for the future. :)

Ohio State may have conquered U Michigan again this year in football, but Ohio State does not win in every competition with U Michigan. Recently the WSJ did some investigative journalism to discover which campus had the “the more hateful” fans. As the story concludes,

“In the end, the verdict was clear. Michigan came out more hateful in 10 of the 15 tasks. Finally, the Wolverines have something to celebrate.”

I know that the U Michigan folks like to think that I don’t give them credit when they earn them. So, let me extend my congrats to the U Michigan faithful!
